  • Spirit pick up first win this campaign, Fire have now lost two from two

  1. Fire 77-6published at 34 balls

    Need 87 runs to win

It's too full from Luke Wood and Chris Green pounds him down the ground for four.

  2. Fire 73-6published at 35 balls

    Need 91 runs to win

Another good set from Liam Dawson, bringing just three singles.

The final one beats a sprawling David Warner at point. He lets out a loud cry down the player mic.

  3. Not outpublished at 38 balls

Definitely not out. That was about a ball's width wide of Chris Green's leg stump.

    Definitely no bat involved.

  5. Spirit reviewpublished at 38 balls

London Spirit are reviewing a possible lbw against Chris Green.

The umpire said no. It looks like it's missing leg stump to me.

  6. 'We are slightly disappointed'published at 20:27 British Summer Time 9 August

Welsh Fire Head Coach Mike Hussey: "It hasn't been a great performance but Jonny [Bairstow] is out there still and Chris Green can bat. We will try and make it as small a loss as possible but there is still hope while those two are out there."

"We have got work to do. We have been below par so we need to get back to the drawing board and work on a lot of things."

"It hurts because we came into this tournament with confidence. Our performance has been disappointing today."

On the surface: "It is not an excuse because they showed you can get a good score on it. They were smart with the way they played so we will not be using it as an excuse."

On an Ashes prediction: "A bit early for me but hoping for an Aussie win. It should be a great series though."

  7. Fire 70-6published at 40 balls

    Need 94 runs to win

A productive set for Welsh Fire, taking eight off Jamie Overton.

However, London Spirit were 90-2 at the same stage...

A much needed four for the Fire.

  9. Fire 69-6published at 42 balls

    Need 95 runs to win

    A boundary!

Jonny Bairstow thuds Jamie Overton for four in between mid-on and mid-wicket.

Richard Gleeson looked absolutely rapid in that ball. Perfect bouncer to Jonny Bairstow who was quickly out of the the way of it.

  11. Fire 62-6published at 45 balls

    Need 102 runs to win

Oooooh Richard Gleeson fires in a rapid bouncer. Jonny Bairstow grins as he dodges out of the way.

Bairstow and Chris Green run two singles and a two.

Fire haven't scored a boundary since the 38th ball. The required rate is above two a ball.

  12. Fire 58-6published at 50 balls

    Need 106 runs to win

Liam Dawson finishes his 10-ball set with 1-9. Excellent bowling.

164 feels very far away for Welsh Fire at the halfway mark. "A disappointing performance" is the assessment from head coach Mike Hussey. Can't argue with that.

    Jake Lintott
Ex-Southern Brave bowler on BBC Two

A very uncharacteristic shot from Paul Walter. He has chipped a very simple chance.

Dawson did what Dawson does. He will have enjoyed that wicket to a left-hander because he will have known Walter wanted a six.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 53 balls

    Walter c Williamson b Dawson 6 (Fire 55-6)

Paul Walter chips the ball to Kane Williamson at mid-wicket.

Another wicket falls, another gift for London Spirit. Sigh.

This isn't the first time Jonny Bairstow has struggled to get the strike in a Welsh Fire shirt. He faced just 15 deliveries at the halfway mark of the innings during their match against Southern Brave here back in 2021.

  16. 'Our bowlers have been awesome'published at 20:16 British Summer Time 9 August

London Spirit opener David Warner speaking on the player's mic: "We are very happy with where we are. Kane [Williamson] is struggling for time he reckons so we are running round here like madmen! The bowlers have been awesome though."

On playing spin: "A lot of it comes from having the experience of sub continent conditions. The Delhi pitches were low and slow and you had to learn how to play reverse sweeps."

On the wicket: "I felt like 150-160 was the par. We had a couple of guys who could have got a little bit more. If you held your length and didn't go too full, you weren't getting hit."

"Our plan was one of the openers trying to be there at the end and get on with the game. My role was to keep playing good cricket shots and I felt we got to a great total."

On the Ashes: "Everyone talks about a Sydney washout. 3-1 Australia for me. The first Test is crucial. The only way England win a Test match is they knock the top-order off on the first day."

  17. Fire 53-5published at 55 balls

    Target 164

After four consecutive sets containing wickets, Welsh Fire have temporarily stemmed the flow. There hasn't been a wicket since the 33rd ball.

Jonny Bairstow and Paul Walter exchange four singles off Liam Dawson's opening five.

Time for a strategic timeout. A welcome break for Welsh Fire, you feel.

  18. Fire 49-5published at 60 balls

    Target 164

Jonny Bairstow is desperate to get on strike. He drops and runs off the final delivery of the set, crying "yes, yes, yes" when the ball was barely off his bat. There was no way he wasn't running.

  19. Fire 48-5published at 62 balls

    Target 164

Shot. Jonny Bairstow cuts Dan Worrall away for four. Lovely timing. The home fans will want to see more of that.

  20. Fire 43-5published at 65 balls

    Target 164

Paul Walter hits the second ball he faces for four but it can't disguise the mess that Welsh Fire are in.

Dan Worrall is going to bowl a 10-ball set. London Spirit are putting the hammer down.
