Slowly and steadily, England built their innings after tea.

Joe Root put on 49 with Harry Brook and 64 with Jamie Smith, with the keeper adding a bit of impetus in the evening light.

He would be bowled by Asitha Fernando as England approached their target, but Root pressed on, making his 64th Test fifty shortly before he struck the winning runs.

  3. 'Sri Lanka are going in a good direction'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 24 August

    Russel Arnold
Ex-Sri Lanka all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

I am extremely pleased by the end of this game even though they lost. Recently, Sri Lanka have had a tendency to roll over, to not show much heart.

But they didn't do that, and in tough conditions that is admirable. We do tend to struggle in the cold and the wind. They were behind the game constantly but they kept coming at England, they kept going.

New players have shown up too, the likes of Kamindu Mendis and Milan Rathnayake. The team is going in a good direction.

Even defending 205, they were in a position to put England under a lot of pressure but England just absorbed it very well.

  4. 'England were crying out for Mark Wood'published at 19:52 British Summer Time 24 August

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I don't think it was a pitch or an outfield that lended itself to the usual 'Bazball' way. When we come to The Oval in a few weeks' time I think we will see a bit more acceleration.

Ultimately, they want to win. If you look at the last few years, it's been great fun, it's been great entertainment. I love the way they play but fundamentally it's about lifting trophies.

They didn't win the Ashes, they didn't win in New Zealand when they should've. In a year's time, they have got to beat India here and then Australia away is the ultimate challenge to pull off something special.

But what I like about this team and what they're doing, they're already planning for that. The last time England won Down Under, the Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower era, that started years before. That's what this England side are trying to achieve.

For me, Mark Wood is the key. Ben Stokes is a talisman and an incredible cricket who England are missing. But they miss Mark Wood more because he can bowl 90mph plus so consistently. Look at this afternoon session - the pitch was flat, the ball wasn't moving and it wasn't turning for the spinner. England were crying out for Mark Wood.

I can't see him playing at Lord's, maybe not at all this summer, because he needs to be fit for Australia. If they have him fit out there, they can do something special.

Chasing 205, England then lost three wickets of their own before the tea interval.

Ben Duckett was caught behind for 11, Ollie Pope mis-timed a reverse sweep for six and Dan Lawrence was lbw for 34.

The wickets began to tumble in the afternoon session, starting with Sri Lanka's innings coming to an end in rather chaotic fashion.

Kamindu Mendis was first to fall for his epic 113 but what followed was pretty dire.

The last four wickets fell for 19 runs, though Sri Lanka did push their lead narrowly past 200, as Dinesh Chandimal was let down by the lower order.

Right then, I promised you some clips.

The opening session was Sri Lanka's, as Kamindu Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal went unbeaten, stretching the Sri Lankan lead from 82 to 169.

Mendis brought up a third Test hundred in just his fourth Test, as the tourists tested England's control of the match.

  8. 'The overwhelming sense is pride'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 24 August

England's Jamie Smith on BBC Test Match Special: "Yeah, got there in the end! But the most important thing was to get us the lead after the first innings.

"Credit to Sri Lanka, they batted brilliantly and made us try lots of different things but they countered all of it. We had a tricky little chase at the end but it was good to get over the line.

"It just ebbed and flowed throughout. In those situations, you can get a little bit stuck and then the pressure comes. So it was just about managing that. Sri Lanka have had a top day, they batted superbly and then they were really disciplined with the ball and gave very little away.

"On 98, I think I tried to run at the spinner! But I don't want to change how I play for the sake of a milestone. The most important thing is to contribute to a win.

"The overwhelming sense for me is pride. You receive all these messages from people who have played a part in your journey whether that's school cricket, club cricket, county cricket. Your family and friends, it's what it means to them as well. That's what means so much to me.

"I think I am confident [of keeping in the subcontinent]. I'd never shy away from that opportunity. I had so much fun here, I've had so much fun in all my Tests so far. I want to play freely and enjoy myself, and I'll always look to do that."

Whether you're a fan, a player or a pundit you want to see competition. So you feel for Sri Lanka because they don't have the funds or the resources that England, Australia or India do. They put up a real fight and if the weather improves, it will suit them and hopefully we'll get another good contest.

Sri Lanka have got to start again but they have got to match the same intensity. That's also going to be a challenge, revisit what the team might look like and any changes.

But, if they can compete like they did here and take the game deep, they'll be in a contest again.

  11. 'They pushed us all the way'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 24 August

England captain Ollie Pope on BBC Test Match Special: "We had to work hard for that over the four days but we bowled really well throughout, Jamie Smith batted so well and then Joe put on a clinic for us at the end.

"He [Smith] missed out on the century at Edgbaston but we all knew it wouldn't be long before the hundred came. He's been knocking on the door for so long, he's been batting so well this season and he deserves every minute of it.

"It was a new-ball pitch. We got them two or three down quite early in both innings which was really important, so credit to Gus and Woakes for that and setting us up nicely. Then in the first innings there were really important innings from Joe again, from Brooky and Jamie obviously. It's great to see different people stepping up.

"I don't know what the deal is with with Woody. He's obviously sore, that's why we didn't see him today. But hopefully he can get some rest, we'd like him for the next game but we'll have to see how it goes.

"The first day took it out of me more than I expected but I have really enjoyed it. Time goes by much quicker in the field when you are so immersed in the game. I enjoy reading the game, trying to find different ways to take wickets and hopefully I can add some runs to it next week.

"The new ball takes care of itself with that sharp movement but as soon as you got past 15-20 overs that's when you had to try and be a bit quirky. But credit to Sri Lanka, their batters played really well, even when we tried everything like using the spinners and the short ball.

"I thought they played really well and pushed us all the way. I've heard the weather is good next week so hopefully we'll enjoy that and so will the crowds."

Smith continues to impress, Root was back to the old Root in this match. He played a classical straight drive in the air to please us all.

Sri Lanka shouldn't have lost too much confidence. They were competitive and worked really hard in the field.

  13. 'We made our mistakes in the first innings'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 24 August

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva on BBC Test Match Special: "I would say, in the second innings with both bat and ball I am pleased. But in the first innings, it could have been better.

"Of course, we knew that England would come hard against us. We had our plans but in the first innings we couldn't execute them. Our mistakes were made in the first innings and that cost us the match.

"Lots of good individual performances. There are positives here and there. But we were off-target too much and you have to be 100% here to win Test matches.

"In English conditions and their very good bowling line-up, we have to tighten our game at the top of the order.

"Hopefully we will have sun next week and that will be good for us! It was tough here, it was cold and windy. We are not used to that. We are looking forward to Lord's."

...but before I get into the clips - a reminder that Today at the Test started on BBC Two and iPlayer five minutes ago. So if you fancy something long-form, head in that direction...

Well, that quietly turned into a rather compelling Test match.

At times - when Sri Lanka were 6-3 in the first innings and 1-2 in the second - you might have feared another simple victory, but the tourists' lower order would fight back to pose a challenge to England's attack.

England ultimately left the field in with a well fought win.

While we get some reaction from a gloriously sunny Old Trafford, let's start running through some highlights from today...

It was a great game of cricket. All credit to Sri Lanka - in all honesty, when they were 6-3 on that first morning I thought this would be over in two and a half days.

And then yesterday morning when they lost those two quick wickets before lunch, to take the game until the end of day four with a huge amount of skill says a lot about them.

With the bat in the second innings, those knocks from Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal, but then today with the ball they showed a huge amount of discipline.

In the next two games, there's no Mark Wood and England missed him this morning. That's a big loss and Sri Lanka have shown that they will be very competitive in this series.

It was unusual to see England having to graft for so long to reach their target. Root in particular dug in and decided to stay.

He played in an old-fashioned and valuable way.

Joe Root finishes unbeaten on 62 from 128, his match-winning four one of just two boundaries in his innings.

Chris Woakes walks off alongside him on eight, having come in for Jamie Smith (39) shortly before the close.

Root has crunched it over the bowler's head! It's been hard work but they got there in the end.

That came from nowhere. Root didn't show any signs of playing a shot like that.
