That is the first boundary since the 30th over.

    Fours! Consecutive fours!

I'm the dehydrated man walking through the desert, am I sure those scoring shots aren't a mirage?

Smith sweeps Jayasuriya to the ropes and then punches another boundary through the leg side.

A further single makes it nine runs for the over - 57 more required.

Only 5.1% of the balls England have faced in this Test have been hit for a boundary - that's the lowest for any Test match in the Bazball era.

If you're wondering why the players are taking drinks at a quarter past six, we're playing until 19:00 BST today to make up overs lost on previous days.

BUT we're allowed up to an extra half hour if they haven't completed the allotted overs for the day, and after that the umpires can add on a further 30 minutes (eight overs) if they think either side has a chance of victory.

It's been hard going and the pitch isn't helping. Sri Lanka have hung in there. Jayasuriya has bowled nicely and they've given England nothing.

  6. Eng 139-4published at 44 overs

    Make that 14 overs.

A couple of singles from the returning Vishwa Fernando - I'm mildly surprised it's not namesake Asitha, who's looked the most dangerous of the seamers and has the best economy rate (1.75 from eight overs this innings).

    The players will take drinks.

  7. Eng 137-4published at 43 overs

Smith knocks Jayasuriya into mid-wicket and hustles through a two.

    13 overs without a boundary.

  8. Eng 134-4published at 42 overs

    Wahey, overthrow.

In fairness, Root was out of his crease after fending off Rathnayake's delivery, it's just that Kamindu Mendis's throw from short leg is poor.

It's the only run of the over.

The arm wrestle continues. Sri Lanka will be happy with what they've done. If they manage to break this partnership then they have a chance of winning this Test match.

One more wicket here and it's game on.

This is still Bazball. Just showing everyone that there is method to it. I love it! Sri Lanka bowling well and getting the respect they deserve.

Smith sees out another Jayasuriya maiden - his fourth of the innings.

A couple of twos for Joe Root, then he blocks out Rathnayake's delivery and takes a further single.

It's still bright and sunny at Old Trafford, albeit part of the outfield is being cast into deep shade by the Point building.

Still no boundaries for Joe Root, after 80 balls - he's never taken this long to hit his first boundary in a home Test innings, and only once has he taken this long in any Test (at the SCG during the 2017-18 Ashes)

  14. Eng 127-4published at 39 overs

Jayasuriya's most expensive over in a while, four from it.

Smith looks tempted to try a booming drive against a wide-ish final delivery, but decides against it and grins.

    78 to win.

  15. Eng 123-4published at 38 overs

Smith finally gets a chance to face as Root takes a single from the penultimate delivery of Rathnayake's over.

He then retains the strike himself, knocking the ball to long leg.

This is what we wanted, a close Test match. A great fight back from Sri Lanka. We thought England would come out and crash, bang, wallop. They just haven't been able to.

  17. Eng 121-4published at 37 runs

Rinse and repeat, Root again faces five balls - this time from Jayasuriya - before taking a single to cover from the final ball.

I get that England are trying to be more ruthless, but think they could be more proactive here. Brook kinda went nowhere there really, before getting out - he isn’t a negative player (and doesn’t look very good playing defensively either) so not sure why he would go out with a mindset to bat slowly?

It'll be interesting to see if Jamie Smith will go out and attack the spinner, he's very capable of playing the situation at hand.

    Target 205

Smith will have to wait to take the strike as Root faces five dots from Rathnayake, before flicking into the leg side to retain the strike.

England have scored nine runs from the last six overs, they still need 85 to win.
