When Ben Duckett reached fifty he had scored 34 of his runs from sweeps, reverse sweeps and scoops.

  2. Eng 120-1published at 23 overs

    Close.

Ben Duckett misses with a reverse sweep and the England opener overbalances as the ball spins past him.

However, he is able to recover and get his back foot planted before Muhammad Rizwan demolishes the stumps.

And again. Bat-pad this time from Duckett but there is no short leg so it's a single rather than a chance.

    Trail by 250

Jitters? What jitters? Back-to-back boundaries for Ollie Pope and they should help the infamously frenetic starter settle down.

The first is a fine cover drive as Aamer Jamal overpitches and that is followed up by a crunching, dimissive pull shot when the seamer overcorrected on length.

Well, Lee, CricViz’s PitchViz model assesses the characteristics of individual pitches using ball-tracking data and is based on a lot of constituent traits - for example, the pace of the pitch, the consistency in bounce, swing movement and seam deviation - and gives it a rating out of 10.

The higher the PitchViz number, the harder it is to bat.

I don't think I've ever been so excited about statistics as I was when I saw the PitchViz stats! Prior to the first Test I read that Multan was the 5th most batsmen friendly surface on the circuit and I spent an age trying to find the credentials for such a rating - I presume it's simply based on previous scores? But then PitchViz jumps in and scrambles my brain more! Someone explain how it all works please!

Ollie Pope is a touch tied down. He is bunkering down against Noman Ali. There is no turn from straight and Pope is playing forwards with the straight bat.

You can feel Pope is getting a bit jittery.

  7. Eng 106-1published at 21 overs

    Pope 14, Duckett 61

Brilliant from Noman Ali as he gets one to turn off the straight.

Round the wicket to Ollie Pope, angled in to pitch on middle before gripping and turning sharply to beat the bat.

But the left-arm spinner immediately releases the pressure with a short, wide delivery that Pope carves away for four.

Just one more from the over, a single for Ollie Pope that takes him into double figures.

A typically positive start to the session for England.

It feels like Aamer Jamal is chasing wickets. He is trying to bowl a touch too full.

  10. 100 runs

    Eng 101-1published at 19.3 overs

    Freebie from Aamer Jamal.

Round the wicket, the ball is heading down leg on the angle and Ben Duckett is able to help it on its way to the boundary.

He then clips for three through square leg to bring up the 100 for England - and it's a no-ball so make that 101.

Panic by The Smiths is the record which comes immediately to mind with regards the Multan DJ and new songs.

It's spin at the other end for Pakistan. Well, it has to be, doesn't it?

Noman Ali gets through a tidy enough over of left-arm spin with Ollie Pope whipping the ball to mid-on for a quick single and Ben Duckett sweeping yet again for another.

  13. Eng 91-1published at 18 overs

Aamer Jamal is holding a very tight line, targeting the stumps and Ollie Pope isn't able to pierce the field on the leg side.

A shorter delivery to end the over gives him a chance and he pulls to fine leg for a single.

Pakistan will hope the break has taken the momentum away from Ben Duckett.

Duckett was free-flowing and I think England are in a really good position.

  15. Eng 90-1published at 17.1 overs

We're back under way in the evening session and it is Pakistan's one and only seamer, Aamer Jamal, to bowl.

Ollie Pope happily clips the first ball off his pads for two to get England up and running again.

  16. Postpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time

The evening session is just around the corner and plenty of questions to be answered...

Will England keep the pressure up on Pakistan's spin-dominated bowling attack?

Will Ben Duckett manage to convert after reaching another half-century?

Can Ollie Pope get back in the runs after missing out in the first Test?

Will Pakistan regret picking just one seamer?

And, of course, will this Multan pitch ever start to truly break up?

I've got to be honest with you, Carl, I've not done the research on this one.

But I'd venture a guess that this is a first.

Either way, clearly plenty of talent coming through the doors at Whiston Parish Church CC.

Both Pakistan opening bowlers have played for Whiston Parish Church CC in the South Yorkshire Premier Cricket League. I wonder if that's ever happened before in Test cricket.

Just on that stat, it's worth noting that Ben Duckett is playing in his 28th Test. This is Joe Root's 148th.

Root has plenty of England records, some are likely to remain for quite some time, but I fancy Duckett will take this one from him fairly soon.
