  2. 'A good piece of bowling'published at 12:09 British Summer Time 4 April

    Somerset v Worcestershire 72-1

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

It's a good piece of bowling from Jack Leach, he just gave that one the extra little bit of air.

It was a good low catch from Lewis Gregory, and that is breakthrough that Somerset were looking for.

Well batted Jake Libby and well bowled by Jack Leach.

Paul Walter guides James Taylor behind square on the onside and jogs through for his 50th run.

There is an undemonstrative wave of the bat from the tall opening batter.

50 from 58 deliveries with nine boundaries.

At the other end Charlie Allison has five from 35 balls faced.

  4. Good start for Nottspublished at 16 overs

    Durham 59-2 v Notts.

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Debutant Fergus O'Neill took two wickets in his first spell of County Championship cricket. The seamer has joined Notts for the first part of the season and both his victims were caught behind.

Ben McKinney, who recently played against O'Neill for England Lions against Australia A, was on five when he edged to keeper Joe Clarke. Emilio Gay did the same thing and went for an eight-ball duck.

His first spell of bowling lasted seven overs and he took 2-24.

The sun is shining here and we are expecting highs of 19C today. Contrast that to the first match of the 2021 season between these two when the players stayed on the field as it snowed during one bitterly cold afternoon.

  5. 50 up for Essexpublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 4 April

    Essex (55-0) v Surrey

Matthew Fisher is on for his second over of the morning on his Surrey Championship debut.

Paul Walter carves his third delivery away to the point boundary and the next one is flicked away to the fine-leg rope.

Very comfortable for the home side at the moment.

    Jack LeachImage source, getty

Jack Leach wheels away at the River End and draws a false shot from Jake Libby who plays away from his body and edges it for a streaky couple.

His luck runs out next ball. He's gone!

It's a lovely ball from Leach who turns it into Libby and catches the outside edge. Lewis Gregory does the rest with a smart catch at first slip.

    Kashif Ali is in.

    Hants v Yorks 52-2

James Wharton helps himself to a couple at the start of a new Brett Hampton over as the Yorkshire total passes 50 at the Utilita Bowl.

A cover drive follows but a fine diving save by Liam Dawson denies Wharton a boundary and restricts him to a single.

  11. Hampton misses Shield triumphpublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 4 April

    Hants v Yorks 46-2

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

In just his first over for Hampshire, Brett Hampton picked up his first wicket.

It may go a bit of a way to help him get over the fact that in answering Hampshire's late call to join them as an overseas player, he had to miss the last round of Plunkett Shield games in New Zealand.

His Northern Districts side with whom he’d been enjoying a good season, had to beat Otago to win the title.

They did just that but Hampton was already on the other side of the world, missing all the celebrations.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Durhampublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 4 April

    Notts v Durham 51-2

Josh Tongue comes on for a bowl looking to make an impression after an injury-ruined 2024 season.

Colin Ackermann takes his first ball for four and Tongue drops the next ball short and is pulled for back-to-back boundaries.

The Durham batter helps himself to three to move to 13 and take the visitors past 50 after a difficult opening hour. It's taken 12.4 overs.

  13. All about Bamberpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 4 April

    Warks v Sussex 49-3

It's all about Ethan Bamber this morning as he has 3-8 from his six overs and four maidens in there as well.

It's not a bad way to go about endearing yourself to Bears fans.

By the way, Warwickshire are currently top of the table with their one batting point on the board!

  15. Postpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 4 April

    Somerset v Worcs 59-0

A couple of Ashes 2005 heroes in the house at Taunton.

Michael Vaughan is here to watch his lad Archie and has the King of Spain, Ashley Giles for company.

The former England skipper may have to wait a while to see his young 'un bat, judging by this start.

Jake Libby moves to 24 off 37 balls and Gareth Roderick has 27off 43.

  16. Postpublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 4 April

    Hants v Yorks 38-2

Dawid Malan is now at the crease for Yorkshire and that is just sublime. Brett Hampton is too full and the left-hander just leans into the ball and caresses it through the covers for his first boundary.

David Gower would have been proud of that one.

  17. Division Two updatepublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 4 April

Another one for Liam Guthrie, who has Daniel Bell-Drummond caught behind for 16 and Kent are 37-2 in the 11th over against Northants at Wantage Road.

Ben Charlesworth continues to look good for Gloucestershire at Derby - he has five fours so far in his 22 not out and they are 37-1 in the 12th.

Glamorgan are regrouping following the early loss of Zain Ul-Hassan and are 30-1 against Leicestershire, with opener Eddie Byrom now 16 not out.

  18. Postpublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 4 April

    Warks v Sussex 48-3

It is all happening at Edgbaston.

Ed Barnard appeals confidently for LBW against Tom Clark but gets a shake of the head from the umpire.

The next ball has Clark edging to the third-man boundary for four - there's lots of chatter among the Warwickshire fielders.

  19. Early spin at Tauntonpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 4 April

    Somerset v Worcs 55-0

First big, big shout for Somerset as Lewis Gregory traps Gareth Roderick in front.

It looked mighty close, but it’s not given. It looked bang in front. Perhaps a bit high?

Just the no-ball from the captain’s third over after an expensive opening two.

We're 42 minutes into the new season at Taunton and the ball is thrown to spinner Jack Leach to have a bowl the 12th over of the match.

The England man is right on the money straightaway bowling to Jake Libby who goes on the back foot to guide the fourth ball to deep cover for a single.

  20. Postpublished at 11:46 British Summer Time 4 April

    Essex 34-0 v Surrey

Kemar Roach goes past the outside edge of Charlie Allison's bat before the youngster clips the next delivery confidently up to mid-off for a single.

We have not seen enough from the Surrey attack so far in terms of threatening the edge of the Essex bats.

Paul Walter has moved to 25 from 38 deliveries, oh, make that 29 from 39 as he drives Roach to the extra-cover rope.
