    Happy birthday, Colin Ackermann.

The Durham batter looks settled and in the mood for a big daddy hundred, to coin the term of Graham Gooch, as he brings up three figures for the 27th time in his long first-class career.

And the first ton of this summer's championship.

It’s come off 174 balls, lit up by 15 fours and a six.

More importantly he’s adding some very important runs. He came in at 24-2 and has battled hard to wrest the initiative back from the hosts.

    Stoneman b Hill 46 (Hants 70-1 v Yorks 121)

Out of nowhere, Yorkshire have a wicket.

George Hill angles one in to Mark Stoneman and an inside edge costs him his leg stump. Cue sighs of relief on a warm afternoon for the Tykes.

Nick Gubbins is in at three.

    Walter c Foakes b Fisher 95 (226-3)

Oh that's a tough one to take.

Matthew Fisher digs a short one in down the leg side and Paul Walter just looks to help it on its way down to the long-leg boundary.

But Walter can only get a feather on it and Ben Foakes takes a diving catch.

We almost need a crane to lift Walter off the pitch he is so crestfallen.

We will wait a little longer for our first centurion of the season.

    Hants 70-0 v Yorks 121

Dom Bess isn't going to get away with that as Mark Stoneman pulls a flat full toss away for the second six of his innings.

The former Durham and Middlesex left-hander is now 46 not out.

    Essex 226-2 v Surrey

Paul Walter picks up a single and in doing so brings up the 100 partnership with Jordan Cox.

There's a touch of gloves between the pair, nothing too demonstrative.

Surrey need the tea break because they are toiling with no reward.

    Notts v Durham 237-5

Colin Ackermann is within four of a century on his 34th birthday as faces Josh Tongue.

The ball is thudding off the bat as Tongue bends his back to summon some extra pace. He guides the fifth delivery to third man and picks up two.

The century will have to wait. Will he beat Paul Walters to the honour of the first championship ton of 2025?

    Sonia Twigg
Test Match Special commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

At no point have Essex been running away with it.

They've not been piling on the runs particularly quickly, Surrey have done well to keep them pegged back.

It's just flat, and it's just not offering a lot for the bowlers. The runs will come the longer the batters stay, not to take anything away from Surrey.

  8. wicket

Davies lbw Sutton 4 (Middx 237-6 v Lancs)

One becomes two for Ollie Sutton as he removes Jack Davies.

Lancashire have fought back well after Middlesex reached 215-3 with Ryan Higgins and Leus du Plooy, who is still there on 41, seemingly well set.

  9. 50 runs

50 for Jordan Coxpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 4 April

    Essex 221-2 v Surrey

It took him a while to get going but Jordan Cox goes to 50 for the home side.

Normal service has been resumed for the former man of Kent.

  10. Postpublished at 22 overs

    Hants 61-0 v Yorks 121

Can Yorkshire find a wicket before tea?

In truth, there have been very few major alarms for the Hampshire openers so far.

Neither is in any kind of hurry - having bowled out the Tykes so cheaply, there is plenty of time for platform building.

  11. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 4 April

    Warks v Sussex 229-4

Tom Clark sweeps Rob Yates away for a boundary.

Yates has gone for 31 runs from his four overs - i'm no expert but the experiment may not be working.

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 4 April

    Dickson b Finch 11 (Somerset 39-3 v Worcs 154)

The wickets continue to tumble at Taunton.

Somerset lose opener Sean Dickson who looks to drive Adam Finch but plays all around a straight ball which hits middle and off stumps.

The Pears are fighting back hard.

Tom Banton comes to the middle.

    Ollie SuttonImage source, Rex Features

It's a big moment for Ollie Sutton who claims his maiden first-class wicket as Ben Geddes holes out to Marcus Harris.

We can't tell you much about Ollie except that he played a single One-Day Cup game last summer and took the wicket of Kent teenager Ekansh Singh.

  15. Postpublished at 20 overs

    Hants 56-0 v Yorks 121

Dom Bess on for Yorkshire, who decide spin is the way to go.

His first over is a maiden and the second costs him just a single.

It seems an age since Bess played 14 Tests for England - but in reality, the most recent was only in 2021.

  16. Division Two updatepublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 4 April

Leicestershire have another Glamorgan wicket in the bag with Ben Mike having Timm van der Gugten caught behind for 10. The home side are 168-7 in the 58th over.

Northants are pressing to try and wrap up the Kent tail, having removed Harry Finch for 16 - the visitors are 219-8 in the 58th over.

Graeme van Buuren has reached his first fifty of the summer off 83 balls for Gloucestershire, who are 182-6 in the 55th at Derby.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 4 April

    Lammonby c Brookes b Taylor 8 (Somerset 33-2 v Worcs 154)

Tom Taylor has bowled a fine spell her and picks up a second wicket.

The right-armer bowls around the wicket to the left-hander, probing at off-stump.

Tom Lammonby plays a half-hearted cut which takes a top edge and flies to Ethan Brookes at second slip who cups it two-handed above his head. Nice take.

    Tom Abell joins Sean Dickson.

I'll apologise for the number of Toms in this post.

  18. 50 runs

    Notts v Durham 222-5

With Fergus O'Neill off the pitch receiving treatment, Dillon Pennington continues.

He sends down a ragged over which goes for 12, typified when he strays down leg and Graham Clark tickles it away to the short boundary for the second four of the over.

It brings up the 50 partnership for the sixth wicket, off 73 balls. Very important runs for the visitors.

Sussex are doing a great job here after a worrying start at 40-3.
