  1. Eng 252-5published at 34 overs

A little more orthodox from Jacob Bethell who pinches the strike with a single off the final ball of Glenn Maxwell's over.

    Steady from the England youngster.

  2. 6 runs

    Eng 250-5published at 33.1 overs

    Boom.

Brute power from Liam Livingstone, who fetches Glenn Maxwell from outside off stump and muscles it over the leg-side boundary for six.

  3. Eng 244-5published at 33 overs

Adam Zampa, who has taken some tap today but still has two wickets, is intently chewing gum as he rattles through a tight over with just three singles off it.

England need some big shots to get themselves close to 300 here.

You could sense the urgency from England in this over. They want to put the foot on the gas, but Glenn Maxwell has bowled at a nice pace to make things difficult for them.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 32 overs

    Smith c Hazlewood b Maxwell 39 (Eng 241-5)

Jamie Smith's entertaining knock is brought to an end.

It's a bit of a soft dismissal as he drives uppishly and sends the ball into the hands of Josh Hazlewood at short third.

  6. Eng 232-4published at 31.4 overs

Liam Livingstone, forearms bulging, comes to the middle to join Jamie Smith.

A six-hitting contest between these two could be entertaining.

Glenn Maxwell holds the pace off it, but is slog-swept for four by Smith. There's a dive from the England wicketkeeper's namesake Steve on the boundary, but it just eludes him.

Harry Brook has done the job that England needed - to set the tone here and allow the likes of Liam Livingstone and Jamie Smith to kick on! He missed out on a century, but he's given his side a platform.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 30.2 overs

    Brook c Maxwell b Zampa 87 (Eng 225-4)

    Jinxed it. Thumbs down me.

Enough air offered up by Adam Zampa to lure Harry Brook into taking him on down the ground. Brook is not quite able to get enough of the meat of the bat on it as the ball dips on him and he's not got the distance.

Glenn Maxwell still has plenty to do at long-on and takes a fine diving catch.

Nevertheless a fantastic - potentially match-defining - knock from the stand-in England skipper.

  9. Eng 224-3published at 30 overs

Harry Brook now has 87 off 57 balls. 13 off.

I loved that from Harry Brook. Josh Hazlewood has been brought back and everyone expects him to hit that good length. He does, but Brook has managed to hit him for runs!

  11. Eng 221-3published at 29.3 overs

Harry Brook stands tall and backs his eye to scoop a delivery from Josh Hazlewood from close to his body for four.

A couple of balls later and Brook confidently pulls Hazlewood square for four more.

Brook has looked in sublime touch, today, as per exhibit A:

Those big cheers for the overthrows suddenly died down when the crowd saw just how tight that run out was on the big screen.

But Jamie Smith just got his foot down in time and the cheers return.

That was a bizarre piece of fielding, I have to say! Josh Inglis has given away a four with that throw, but he did clip the stumps and so-very-nearly ran out Jamie Smith!

  14. Eng 213-3published at 29 overs

An eventful delivery as England pick up six runs after some overthrows following a shy at the stumps at the non-striker's end by Josh Inglis.

However, Jamie Smith was coasting along and there's a few nerves as the umpire's review it. Smith's bat isn't down but his foot is as he strides into the crease. Just.

  15. Eng 205-3published at 28.1 overs

There's something of Matthew Hayden about Jamie Smith. Adam Zampa holds the pace off and Smith clatters him to the ropes. Effortless.

Harry Brook has been brutal against anything short in this innings off both the quicks and the spinners - Australia's default tactic to him hasn't quite worked out as yet.Short balls:

    • v Pace - 20 off 10
    • v Spin - 22 off 9
  17. Eng 201-3published at 28 overs

Harry Book has 71 off 48 balls. Jamie Smith is 23 off 17.

11 overs left. Stick with us, could be some fireworks here.

This is what I love about Jamie Smith. Look at how effortlessly he plays it, but then the ball just flies!

  19. 6 runs

    Eng 198-3published at 27.2 overs

Marnus Labuschagne into the attack. Jamie Smith is licking his lips.

With the minimum of fuss, Smith uses his reach and pummels the Aussie part-time spinner back over his head for a straight six.

I haven't seen Adam Zampa bowling like this in ages. He's usually very reliable. Must be the illness!
