Summary

  1. Eng 76-1published at 18 overs

Maiden from Nadine de Klerk as Heather Knight calmly defends her way through the over.

The clear blue skies we had at the start of play have now been replaced by grey clouds overhead.

The way that Annerie Dercksen has progressed in this series should be encouraging for South Africa.

It's good to get the exposure and playing against good teams like England should only accelerate the progress of the South Africa bowlers.

  3. Eng 76-1published at 17 overs

Play resumes and Heather Knight works the last ball of the over down to fine leg for a single.

That's the only run from the Annerie Dercksen over. England going along nicely now.

  4. Eng 75-1published at 16.4 overs

We've got a delay because of an issue with the electronic sightscreen.

The top segment of the screen has stayed black rather than switching to white.

Ground staff are quickly getting to work, pulling a big white curtain across to rectify the situation.

South Africa want to be attacking to take wickets but it's risk-reward because the boundaries are tiny.

Even when it's not timed well, the ball is flying away and racing to the boundary when England find a gap.

  6. Eng 75-1published at 16 overs

    Bouchier 43, Knight 4

Maia Bouchier whips the first ball of Nadine de Klerk over through the leg side to move into the 40s.

Meanwhile, the TV pictures show the nearby trees being buffeted by the wind. It's still dry for now, though, and that's the main thing.

It was not the most convincing way for Heather Knight to get off the mark. It would have been a cracking catch if Nadine de Klerk had managed it.

A few signs of slowness in the pitch perhaps.

  9. Eng 71-1published at 15 overs

Heather Knight is off the mark with a boundary.

It's another drive to add to the England collection this morning. This one is slightly uppish from the captain but wide of the cover fielder and the ball is quickly at the boundary.

The boundaries are not the biggest and that combined with the quick outfield means batters will certainly be rewarded for their shots in this match.

South Africa have been a little bit sloppy in the field in terms of their basics. Tammy Beaumont's wicket was the stand-out piece of work.

The near-wicket of Tammy Beaumont could have been a lot worse; South Africa will be glad it only cost them about 20 runs.

  11. Eng 67-1published at 14.1 overs

Big appeal first ball after drinks as a short ball from Annerie Dercksen jags back and goes relatively close to the gloves of Heather Knight.

Actually, on second viewing, it wasn't all that close. Not out. But a hearty appeal nonetheless from South Africa.

Clear change in tactics from the South Africa bowlers here. In the first 10 overs they bowled 22% back of length/short deliveries. While in the last three overs they've bowled 44% back of length/short deliveries - going short of a good length twice as often.

  13. drinks break

Drinks breakpublished at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time

Drinks are being taken now in Bloemfontein after a very good first hour for England.

Tammy Beaumont got away with one second ball when she appeared to be plumb lbw to Marizanne Kapp but the England opener did fall a little while later, pulling Ayanda Hlubi to mid-wicket.

Meanwhile, Maia Bouchier is going along very nicely indeed.

Less nice is the fact that the wind is picking up and the storm clouds appear to be emerging in the distance...

  14. Eng 67-1published at 14 overs

    Bouchier 39, Knight 0

Another bowling change for South Africa with Nadine de Klerk replacing Ayanda Hlubi, meaning the seamer ended her spell with a wicket.

Heather Knight, in at three for England, faces up for the first time but the skipper will have to wait to get off the mark.

A bye hands the strike over to Maia Bouchier, who ends the over with another cracking drive, through mid-on for four.

  15. Eng 62-1published at 13 overs

Having been called for a pretty harsh wide for a bouncer, Annerie Dercksen goes fuller to Maia Bouchier but this one slides down leg.

Bouchier is able to get just a tickle on it to take the ball past wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta for four.

Four more to end the over, a lovely checked drive from Bouchier that goes just in front of square and races to the fence.

That was a tame dismissal in the end for Tammy Beaumont. It was a shorter delivery and well directed.

Beaumont just couldn't control it as much as she wanted but it was a good catch, too.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12 overs

    Beaumont c Luus b Hlubi 21 (Eng 53-1)

    Breakthrough for South Africa.

It's a short ball from Ayanda Hlubi and Tammy Beaumont tries to pull it.

She doesn't get hold of it at all well, though, and hits it rather tamely to Sune Luus at mid-wicket.

Beaumont falls at the end of the 12th over. That's 11.4 overs and 17 runs later than she might have done, if we're being honest.

DRS is part of the umpire’s toolkit. They have been robbed of the opportunity to do their job properly.

These are big occasions for the umpires too, not just the players, and they want to get it right.

Jack Rule: Well the second delivery of the Test showed exactly why DRS should have been in place. When you are going to have two umpires that have never stood in a Test match, you should have all the tools available to them to help get the decisions right.

  20. Eng 51-0published at 11 overs

Shot of the morning from Maia Bouchier.

A sumptuous straight drive back past Annerie Dercksen. That was four the moment it left the bat.

That brings up the fifty partnership between Bouchier and Tammy Beaumont.
