I wasn't all that optimistic, to be frank. There were huge lakes on the outfield, when you're in England and you see puddles like that you don't think you're going to play, but this outfield is sand based.

Every time there's a rain break the England team have emerged and pretended to warm up, they were trying to send a message to the umpires.

Pete: How many of those 20 teams belong in the World Cup? Do we really need to watch teams who can be bowled out for 30-40 runs by a decent team?

Sam Curran is doing some bowling. Jofra Archer isn't.

I don't know how much to read into that.

Chris, it's taken this long to expand the World Cup to 20 teams, now you're cutting it back to 16.

Chris in Finland: Reduce World Cup to 4 groups of 4 teams - Teams play each other twice over two days - If day 1 is a washout, the 2 matches can be played on day 2 - You chase first once, bat first once - Top 2 from each group go to straight knockout last 8

This where just starting the game is massive. Play can continue through a bit of drizzle, but it wouldn't start in it.

They have covered the pitch with a matt, rather than the big covers. The drizzle hasn't stopped the players warming up.

The toss will be at 20:40 BST. I can see the square and a bit of blue sky. Will possibly need another brew for this.

The groundstaff are still dealing with the water on the huge sheets.

The players are heading out for some warm-ups.

We still need there to be no more rain.

    Right then, we're starting.

    21:00 BST. 11 overs a side.

Now Adil Rashid has just been told something. Whatever it was, he wasn't happy about it. He might be a bit antsy about when we're actually starting.

Jos Buttler is in deep conversation with the umpires, looking at something. He's shaking hands. It looks like we're getting an explanation on the match set-up.

If they restarted at 21:00 BST there's talk that would mean a 11-over-per-side match.

We can see the pitch for the first time in a while. The groundstaff have removed one of the big sheets.

Very frustrating this. Can you tell me why there is a cut off time of 9:46 BST when tennis competitions go on until the early hours??

The umpires are out. No umbrellas. Promising.
