    It's taken them 12.1 overs.

  2. NZ 283-4published at 71 overs

The New Zealand batters work Bashir around for three singles, and umpire Ahsan Raza has a word with Daryl Mitchell for running down the wicket.

Mike Lace: Injuries can happen at anytime and sadly Stokes is getting a few, but at some point England are going to have to bat longer consistently. 35 overs is just nowhere near enough time to give the bowlers off.

  4. NZ 280-4published at 70 overs

Jacob Bethell continues from the other end - England didn't bowl any spin in this match until a fair way into the New Zealand second innings, now they've got tweakers at both ends.

The final ball of the over baffles Williamson as he advances down the pitch, but the New Zealand batter adjusts to dab the ball towards backward point.

  6. Stokes will not return this inningspublished at 03:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2024

An update from England about captain Ben Stokes, who limped off after pulling up while bowling in the second session...

"England captain Ben Stokes is currently receiving treatment for a left hamstring issue.

"He will not return to the field in this innings and will undergo further assessment to determine his availability to bat in England’s second innings."

  7. NZ 276-4published at 69 overs

Having been brought back on strike with a leg bye from that first Bashir delivery, Williamson gets his innings back under way with a single into the covers.

  8. Not outpublished at 68.1 overs

    NZ 275-4

It was not worth the gander.

Impact was some way outside the off stump.

Another unsuccessful review from Ollie Pope.

  9. Umpire reviewpublished at 68.1 overs

Has Shoaib Bashir struck with the first ball after tea?

He's struck Daryl Mitchell on the pads - nothing from the umpire.

"Go on Popey, let's have a gander!" can be heard on the stump mic.

And a gander he will have...

As the TV pundits stroll around the square at tea, it's worth noting that conditions have improved a fair bit since this morning's rain.

Hamilton isn't bathed in sunshine, as it was on days one and two, but nor is it especially cloudy any more.

Ben Stokes injuring himself in a dead rubber England are just waiting to lose… the nonsense of Test cricket at its finest.

We have yet to hear an update on Ben Stokes, who hobbled straight off mid-session after appearing to tweak his left hamstring.

The grimace on his face suggests it is not too good however.

  18. Tea - NZ 274-4published at 68 overs

Kane Williamson goes for the sweep and the ball flicks off pad and back leg, before squeezing past Ollie Pope and racing to the rope.

Williamson then chops the ball towards the point boundary for two to complete a punishing session for England.

New Zealand added 138 runs for the cost of just one wicket to reach 274-4 and lead by a mammoth 478.

All too easy for Kane Williamson as Shoaib Bashir drags one down and Williamson pulls on the front foot to the rope. He moves to 119.

Good response from Bashir, who comes around the wicket and lures Williamson into a play and miss.
