It's a good job Rishabh Pant is out there with Washington Sundar who knows how to bat so he doesn't have to worry about farming the strike.

This is a really huge effort, seriously gladiatorial from Rishabh Pant.

Madness or not, if Rishabh Pant manages to get to his half century swinging with a busted foot, then fair play to him.

However, England did close to dismissing Washington Sundar as well...before Rishabh Pant surprisingly emerged to bat again having retired hurt through injury.

If you tune in now to Test Match Special, you'll be able to hear the second part of The 2005 Ashes: Settling the Score, a collaboration between the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sport’s Test Match Special.

The collaboration reimagines the drama of that legendary summer through the emotional power of music, archive commentary and storytelling, with narration by acclaimed actor Charles Dance. Blending real match audio and cinematic narration, all soundtracked by the full force of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the programme tells the gripping tale of the five-Test series that changed English cricket forever.

The programme’s emotional arc is soundtracked by classical favourites and modern works performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Expect the iconic drama of Prokofiev’s Montagues and Capulets, Soul Limbo (forever associated with cricket on the BBC), plus Parry’s Jerusalem and Bizet’s Carmen, and works by John Adams, Camille Pépin, Thomas Adès and Mendelssohn.

The whole programme will be live on BBC Radio 5 Live at 20:00 BST this evening (Thursday), when you can join us for a special accompanying live text.

    Thanks, Mike.

Now.... It's a 20 years since that series and we have a special treat for you.

Perhaps, Andy, perhaps - but the forecast for this Test has actually improved and we weren't due any rain today, so I hopefully we should be play to a result.

Right, I'm going to hand you over to Timothy Abraham for the rest of lunch and the afternoon session.

Andy: One thing you can always guarantee it's going to rain during the Test match in Manchester.

    Pant 39, Washington 20

Indeed it is, Matthew - and the players are coming off for an early lunch.

The hover cover has been brought on, the rain isn't too heavy though and hopefully we'll be set to get going after the interval.

India have scored 57 runs from 22 overs in the morning session.

Why is Rishabh Pant out there? Is he there to extend the innings or is he there to score? Obviously those two can go in tandem but we haven't seen anything obvious from him yet.

If he reverse-sweeps, the (non-existent) roof will come off.

  16. Ind 321-6published at 105 overs

A single for Washington Sundar gets Rishabh Pant on strike, but the India keeper immediately gets down the end with a shot into the covers off Brydon Carse.

He gets no sympathy from his opening partner though, who brings him back straight away and Pant only just beats the throw.

Pant's certainly not looking comfortable running between the wickets.

Pant putting me to shame here… I dropped out of my village match because of a horsefly sting!

    Fergy, Cheltenham

Even if Pant scores 10 more runs today, this will be a remarkable passage of play in this test match. Take a bow, Rishabh Pant!

    This is just remarkable.

It's right to have Rishabh Pant out here now whilst he's got someone at the other end. There wouldn't have been any point in bringing him out with Jasprit Bumrah.

Now a bit of glove and shoulder!

Ben Stokes strikes Rishabh Pant with his opening delivery, but the India wicketkeeper cuts to get off strike from the following delivery.

Pant and Ben Duckett have a bit of a chat at the end of the over - the England opener perhaps asking what Pant's doing here.

Meanwhile there's a bit of rain in the air...

Would it be completely against the spirit of the game for the England bowlers to bowl non-stop yorkers at Pant?
