Summary

  1. Aus 236-3published at 77 overs

    Lead by 66

The good fielding doesn't last too long as the mid-wicket fielders dives over the ball at the start of the Ryana Macdonald-Gay over.

Just three from it in total but England have done themselves no favours in the field today.

The damage may already have been done but they'll want to at least try and put it right, starting in this last half hour before the dinner break.

With Annabel Sutherland pushing the scorecard ahead, Sophie Ecclestone toils hard at the other end finishing the 1,402nd over of her international career.

Since Ecclestone made her debut in July 2016 v Pakistan at Bristol, no bowler has bowled as many overs as the left-arm spinner in women's internationals.

Most balls bowled in women's internationals (Since Ecclestone's debut)

    • Sophie Ecclestone - 8,412
    • Deepti Sharma - 8,148
    • Ash Gardner - 5,723
    • Megan Schutt - 5,708
    • Melie Kerr - 5,692

That was a superb fielding effort. That's what they're capable of.

  4. Aus 233-3published at 76 overs

    Lead by 63

Good fielding by England. Yes, you read that correctly.

Too short from Sophie Ecclestone, allowing Beth Mooney to go back and pull but Maia Bouchier dives to her left at square leg to make an excellent stop.

Ecclestone then bowls a ripper than beats Annabel Sutherland on the outside edge. The England spinner can't believe that didn't find the edge.

There's going to be no love lost. As much as you've got to feel for England, Australia are going to put their foot down.

It seems as if England are in trouble again.

  7. Aus 231-3published at 75 overs

    Lead by 61

Heather Knight is stood with her hands on her hips, shaking her head, after another misfield.

This one in the covers by Lauren Filer turns a single into a three. Add that to the four byes early in the over and it is an expensive one.

To say England look frazzled out there is a major understatement.

FranchesHarper: I wish England's players would stop shouting out "CATCH!" when the ball is hit in the air. It's ridiculously optimistic.

  9. Aus 223-3published at 74 overs

    Mooney 20, Sutherland 109

Lovely drive from Annabel Sutherland, threading it through the gap between extra cover and mid-off.

She has to settle for two as the fielder in the deep comes round to cut it off but Australia continue on their merry way.

Surely this has to be the worst fielding performance of the tour (and that is saying something)?

  12. Aus 220-3published at 73 overs

    Lead by 50

Just a single from Ryana Macdonald-Gay's over and Australia's lead is up to 50.

They've had a combined five chances to get rid of the two top-class batters at the crease and Australia have another three of those to come before England even get into the bowlers.

The tourists' pain may only just have begun...

Amazing reception here for Annabel Sutherland, who scored her first Ashes century against England at Trent Bridge in 2023 batting at number eight.

Here, she's been promoted to three because of Ellyse Perry's injury and taken it all in her stride.

As with pretty much every Australian batter today though, she's been given some assistance with drops on 29 and 31.

  14. Aus 219-3published at 72 overs

    Lead by 49

Four more to end the over and Annabel Sutherland's rather subdued celebration shows that she is a long way from done here.

England have got to try and regroup here or they risk this getting very ugly.

Fantastic from Annabel Sutherland. The crowd extremely appreciative of what they've seen from her today.

    Aus 215-3

Annabel Sutherland is the first woman to score a Test century at the MCG!

Forget the England drops for a moment and enjoy a special moment for the Victorian, who cuts Sophie Ecclestone away behind square.

Four runs to create history. Luck early on but this has been a fine knock. A third Test ton comes up from 193 balls.

That is hard to watch, they don't come much easier than that. England just cannot take a catch, there's nowhere to hide.

What's that going to do for the morale of the team?

It's almost unbelievable. The wheels aren't just rattling, they've disappeared down the highway.

  19. dropped catch

Mooney dropped on 18published at 71 overs

    Aus 211-3

I cannot believe I'm seeing this. Another dropped catch.

That was pretty much catching practice as Beth Mooney guides the ball to gully off Ryana Macdonald-Gay.

Maia Bouchier is there but doesn't even get her hands to it, the ball just bounces off her and goes to ground. Unbelievable.
