Well, thanks for sticking with us throughout a frustrating afternoon.

We will be back tomorrow for England's final group game - and Jos Buttler's final outing as white-ball captain - against South Africa at 9:00 GMT.

You can read more about Buttler's resignation from my colleague Matt Henry out in Pakistan, and also Timothy Abraham's match report from today's rain-affected encounter.

We look forward to your company again tomorrow - bye for now!

  2. 'Hopefully England win big' - Hashmatullahpublished at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi: "It's unfortunate. It was a good game and just because of the rain, nothing happens.

"I think we should've scored 300+ but they bowled really well, especially in the middle overs. 270 was good on this wicket but we didn't start well when it came to bowling. We gave too much width for them and too many hitting options. Hopefully, we will learn from this."

On Sediqullah Atal: "He played really well. The first two games he didn't play the way we expected from him but his comeback was good. It's his first ICC event and he played really well under pressure. He's a talented guy."

On Azmatullah Omarzai: "He's a top-class player. He always performs for us. Against England, he got five wickets and scored 40 quick runs. Today, he played with positive intent. Hopefully, he can carry on."

On Afghanistan's semi-final hopes: "You never know! We still have hopes and hopefully England win big!"

  3. 'It's a different beast when you get to the finals'published at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

Australian captain Steve Smith: "I thought our guys did a good job.

"There were different changes - we tried to keep things simple, and tried to take wickets throughout the middle order. I thought the guys did a good job to restrict them to 270."

On extras: "There were a few. Spencer [Johnson] was getting a few balls to swing after the bat today.

"Look, the guys did a good job. We created a few opportunities early on.

"We could have had a few more wickets up top. It was a good performance and shame we got washed out at the end."

On Matthew Short's injury: "I think he'll be struggling. He wasn't moving very well and it is probably going to be too quick between games for him to recover."

On Travis Head's batting: "He batted nicely. He hit the middle of the bat consistently. When he's going like that he's as good as anyone in the world.

"I think the guys have done a good job. The first objective was to get to the semi-finals.

"It's a different beast when you get to the finals."

I quite like the Champions Trophy. It's creating games that matter.

So far, most of the games have been captivating.

Sediqullah Atal's 85 was the highlight for Afghanistan today, showcasing their growing batting depth after Ibrahim Zadran's stunning 177 against England.

Their 273 probably wasn't going to be enough against Australia's powerhouse line-up but it was a brave effort.

Here's the moment that the game was abandoned. It's not particularly surprising when you see the state of the outfield, unfortunately.

  7. Afghanistan 'ran out of answers'published at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

With the bat Afghanistan got into block or slog mode. They seemed to lose their intent.

With the ball all the reliance was put on Fazalhaq Farooqi to swing the ball and Travis Head got after him.

They almost ran out of answers. It's part of their development and the more they play the better they'll get.

Afghanistan will be frustrated. They are not mathematically out but it's quite unlikely they can go through. They will be watching tomorrow's match nervously, needing England to beat South Africa by quite a big margin.

Australia were on course for a pretty comfortable win anyway at 109-1, with Travis Head going well on 59.

We never want to see contests end because of the weather, but at the end of the day it's cut-throat.

I guess what Afghanistan have to take away from this tournament is they beat England.

That's their benchmark now. If they do that, more often than not, we will see Afghanistan popping up in a lot of big tournaments.

    And that is that.

The umpires held the inspection and decided that the outfield would not dry in time, despite the efforts of the ground staff.

Australia progress to the Champions Trophy semi-finals.

Here's what it means for the group if this is a washout.

    • Australia will go up to four points so they will be safely through to the semis.
    • If South Africa beat England, they will top the group with five points, but if England win, then South Africa and Afghanistan will finish on three points each, so it will be decided on net run-rate. The Proteas would be strong favourites, in that instance, and Afghanistan would be hoping for a very big England win.

The shambolic nature of England's Champions Trophy campaign has resulted in Jos Buttler stepping down as white-ball captain.

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

We're not having the best of luck with the weather this week. It does seem to have stopped raining in Lahore, but it was quite the downpour, so the mopping-up process is taking a while.

We have now officially started to lose overs, too.

The umpires are out in the middle in their quite fetching pink jackets, umbrellas safely stowed away.

The groundstaff are buzzing around and now have the unenviable task of mopping up the outfield.

When we have any news about the fate of this match, you'll be the first to know.

England have been caught short in all departments which is disappointing.

When you have these disappointments they're sometimes the wake-up call that you need.
