Summary

  1. Tea - SA 12-2published at 5.2 overs

    Target 351

Tea is taken after that wicket and England will be delighted.

Both South Africa openers gone and getting rid of Laura Wolvaardt early will really please.

Given how low the ball is staying already and with the Proteas' star batter gone already, there is a chance this game doesn't make it to day four.

To take you through tea and the last session, at least of the day, here's Timothy Abraham.

That one kept terribly low but things are going all wrong for South Africa now.

Probably a little more doubt in that one than Laura Wolvaardt's. It could've been missing leg.

But it doesn't matter, Lauren Filer has a huge smile on her face.

The lack of bounce is quite worrying. We've got two hours after tea and possibly a bit of extra time. England will have a spring in their step after the interval.

  4. wicket

    Bosch lbw b Filer 4 (SA 12-2)

Stays low and Anneke Bosch is given lbw!

Lauren Filer has her first of the innings as another ball shoots along the ground - and this time from a straighter line.

Bosch is in mid-air as the ball strikes her on the shin.

Was that sliding down leg? It might have been - it certainly was close - but the umpire didn't think so, up goes the finger and South Africa are in real trouble.

  5. SA 12-1published at 5 overs

    Target 351

Maiden over from Lauren Bell, bowling to Annerie Dercksen, who drives the last ball smartly but straight to cover.

England run through to get one more over in before tea.

  6. SA 12-1published at 4 overs

    Target 351

    Lovely shot from Anneke Bosch.

Lauren Filer overpitches and the South Africa opener drives elegantly through mid-off for four.

Filer drags her length back to finish the over and a thick outside edge from Bosch bounces well short of gully.

Massive wicket! England's 350 looked very far ahead already but even more so now.

A great ball from Lauren Bell, that did nip back in a long way and in fairness to Laura Wolvaardt, it's not a delivery you want to get so early in your innings.

England would've been desperate for that breakthrough because she is capable of batting for a long time.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 3 overs

    Wolvaardt lbw b Bell 4 (SA 8-1)

Jags back and hit in front - huge wicket for England!

Brilliant from Lauren Bell. It's a length ball that pitches outside off but comes back sharply off the seam to surprise Laura Wolvaardt.

She is hit on pad in front of middle and off stump, trapped on the crease. With the South Africa skipper gone early, England's chances of victory have shot up again.

That is a glorious way to get off the mark.

  11. SA 8-0published at 2.4 overs

    Target 351

Width from Lauren Bell and while the ball doesn't get up that much, Laura Wolvaardt has no problem locating it with the middle of her bat.

Driven through the covers for four.

  13. SA 4-0published at 2 overs

    Target 351

Lauren Filer shares the new ball and starts with a very full ball that Anneke Bosch digs out to mid-wicket.

The England seamer is very fortunate not to be called for a wide with a ball that Amy Jones takes in front of first slip before the third ball stays low.

So far the balls that have stayed particularly low have been wide of the stumps. South Africa need to hope it stays that way.

  14. Wolvaardt reprimandedpublished at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2024

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council for her reaction to being dismissed in the first innings against England.

Wolvaardt was found to have breached article 2.8 of the ICC's code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to "showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an international match".

Wolvaardt admitted the level 1 offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Shandre Fritz. On-field umpires Lauren Agenbag and Kerrin Klaaste, third umpire Bongani Jele and fourth umpire Siphelele Gasa levelled the charge.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Wolvaardt’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

  16. SA 4-0published at 1 over

    Target 351

Laura Wolvaardt leaves a ball wide outside off from Lauren Bell and it goes through at ankle height, shooting though the legs of Amy Jones and away for four byes.

South Africa are away in the chase but England will be happy to see the pitch misbehaving like that.

The players are back out. Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch are the openers for South Africa.

Lauren Bell will bowl the first over of the innings for England. We've got a touch over 20 minutes until tea.

England will be really pleased with how they have approached this Test match. Of course we'll always have one eye on the Ashes, but I'd say the only little concern is England did lose another quick flurry of wickets, a mini-collapse of 4-12.

But the hard work was done by that point so it didn't cost them too much on this occasion.
