At least England picked it up this afternoon, the morning session was poor.

Rehan Ahmed was the surprise winner of England's six-hitting contest at training yesterday. Noman Ali seems to be aware of that because he's lobbing the ball right up and trying to tempt England's leg-spinner into a big whack.

He does go after one in this opening over but it is hit safely for one through the covers.

Magnificent innings from Jamie Smith in the circumstances. Some of our senior players should be taking a look at themselves.

    Surprise surprise.

Noman Ali is going to start off after tea.

On the Inspiring Generations strategy, ECB chief executive Richard Gould said: “Today’s announcements are the roadmap for where we will take cricket over the course of the next four years.

"The delivery of our strategy and positive change in the sport is the responsibility of all of us, led by the ECB to set out how this change will happen.

“I am fortunate that I get to spend a lot of time in counties and clubs across England and Wales and I have no doubt that everyone in the game, including our charity and commercial partners, and players and volunteers at all levels of the sport, are supportive of this ongoing change.”

This week the ECB have announced updates to its Inspiring Generations strategy - its plan for growing the game and increasing participation in diverse communities.

Among other things it hopes to increase the number of people playing, watching, attending or following cricket online to 14m per year, grow the number of children playing cricket by 10%, improve diversity in the game and support "18 financially sustainable counties".

One of the key plans is to boost participation in state schools by training hundreds of teachers. The aim is to provide free cricket for 3.5m children in state primary schools over the next six years.

The ECB also plays to invest £3.5m into the most ethnically diverse areas of England and Wales, supporting 70 players a year through our partnership with the South Asian Cricket Academy, engage 21,000 young people over the next three years through the African Caribbean Engagement (ACE) programme and train 2,000 staff across cricket in inclusion and tackling discrimination.

    Thanks Sam.

If you want my opinion, a little while ago I said to my colleague 300 would be a very good score and 240 would be about par.

Another hectic session as this Test continues to move on apace.

Has that partnership between Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson taken England to a competitive total on this surface or do they still need a few more?

At this stage, I really couldn't say, so I think it's time to bring back Matthew Henry.

I think both teams will go into tea content.

  13. Tea - Eng 244-8published at 63 overs

Jack Leach pulls for a single to end the over, and the session.

A good one for England all told, especially after losing Ben Stokes early on, but those two late wickets of Gus Atkinson and Jamie Smith means they'll end it a tad disappointed.

Soft dismissal. Jamie Smith won't be happy with that. I don't mind him playing those shots but before tea, he didn't need to.

That's going to be a very frustrating shot for a lot of people. Jamie Smith has batted today with a lot of maturity and calmness.

    He's walking back frustrated.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 62.3 overs

    Smith c Rizwan b Zahid 91 (Eng 243-8)

No century for Jamie Smith but a fantastic innings.

He went for a big slog-sweep. Got a top-edge and the ball went straight up.

Muhammad Rizwan came round from behind the stumps and takes a straightforward catch.

A deserved wicket for Zahid Mahmood but a disappointing end for Smith so close to tea.

  17. Eng 242-7published at 62 overs

Careful, Alex, he's not reached 100 yet...

An altogether more quiet over - I think we all needed it after the excitement of the last one - with just two singles from it.

Five minutes or so until tea.

The way Jamie Smith has gone from 0 to 50, then 50 to 100 is remarkable.

  19. dropped catch

Smith dropped on 89published at 61 overs

    Eng 240-7

Let's be very clear, it is extremely harsh to call this a drop by Sajid Khan.

Jamie Smith was looking for another straight six. Sajid Khan took the catch above his head but had to throw the ball up before he tumbled over the boundary cushion.

He was able to get back to the ball but the throw was taking it over the fence so he has to put in another brilliant dive to flick the ball back and prevent the six.

Fantastic fielding. Technically a drop, though.

It was a rubbish ball, it was full toss, just launched at the batter.
