Summary

  1. Tea at Chelmsfordpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 9 September

    Essex 161-4 v Notts

A fine stand of 75 and counting from Tom Westley (69no) and Paul Walter (35no) has got Essex back on track on day one against Nottinghamshire.

They looked in peril at 86-4 but Westley and Walter have done a fine rebuilding job to leave things looking even heading into Monday's final session.

However, the skies look very dark overhead - and, with rain starting to fall, an early tea is taken.

  2. Tea at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 96-4

West Indies pace bowler Chemar Holder will continue his spell and George Bell squirts the last ball through third man for his first runs - three of them.

    That's tea.

Durham have had the better of the day's play so far, removing the senior trio of Keaton Jennings, Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon for an aggregate of 58 runs.

All three fell to Ben Raine, who has the impressive figures of 3-13 in 12 overs of skilled seam bowling.

Lancashire need a big stand from Matty Hurst (24) and George Bell after the break as they battle for Division One survival.

  3. wicket

GLAMORGAN BOWLED OUT FOR 186published at 15:16 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 186

Bish, bash, bosh. The final three Glamorgan wickets fall for two runs.

Jack Carson picks up the last one with a wonderfully floated off break which turned sharply and crashed into the stumps.

It was too good for James Harris - who had scored 20 in 68 balls.

That will also be a good time to take tea.

  4. YORKSHIRE LEADpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 9 September

    Leics 98 v Yorks 102-4

    That's right.

Before tea on day one and Yorkshire are already ahead on the scoreboard.

They've been in need of a stand to get their innings going and were wobbling at 56-4.

But James Wharton and Jonny Tattersall have settled.

Still plenty to do though to take control of the game.

Eight overs to tea in the Grace Road sunshine.

  5. wicket

WICKET Gorvin c Simpson b Unadkat 0published at 15:12 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 184-9

A second wicket of the over for Jaydev Unadkat.

He definitely had a plan to Andy Gorvin, and it was clearly to pitch it short.

Into the ribs, angling across the batter and through to John Simpson, via the glove. The research was worth it!

Four wickets for Unadkat, four catches for Simpson.

  6. Postpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 232-5 v Gloucs

A tidy over from Zafar Gohar, conceding just a couple of singles.

Ajeet Singh Dale drops short and Jack Davies clatters the ball over mid-wicket for four.

    He's on 41 now.

Four more drilled through cover to end the over.

    45 now.

Surrey fans don't expect, and don't require, anyone's sympathy. What fans of other counties need to understand is that it is not against any rule and not unethical to field the strongest possible side you can. Indeed, surely it is a moral responsibility to every other club to do so? Moaning endlessly about how 'unfair' it is that Surrey can afford to do that is, at best, ignoring basic cricket economics and, at worst, simple unadulterated jealousy, which is never a good look. There is a wage cap in place for a reason, and ALL counties are subject to it.

  8. Tea at Tauntonpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 9 September

    Somerset 197-4 v Surrey

    Oh this is marvellous.

Forget the score. They have reached tea at Taunton bang on time!

County cricket being played to schedule! What a novel idea.

It's down to Shakib Al Hasan sending down 28 overs of his left-arm spin.

He got rid of Tom Abell for 49 after Archie Vaughan had fallen for 44 in the second over after lunch.

But Tom Banton is 65 not out at the break, with James Rew on 16, and Somerset are healthy having won the toss.

  9. wicket

WICKET Douthwaite c Simpson b Unadkat 41published at 15:08 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 184-8

Nibble, nibble, and Jaydev Unadkat has got a bite out of Dan Douthwaite.

The Indian has been outstanding at times today with his testing lines and subtle movements and he has his third wicket of the innings.

Douthwaite had been the perfect mixture of stout and enterprising in his 41 but the merest of edges sees him depart.

  10. Bad light stops play at Canterburypublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 9 September

    Kent v Hampshire 118-3

It has got a tad gloomy again so it is fair the umpires fish out the light meter from their pocket.

Off go the players again...and this time the umpires go with them and the covers replace them.

  11. Postpublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 9 September

    Leics 98 v Yorks 90-4

A partnership of 30 shouldn't be much to shout about.

But on this wild day at Grace Road of 14 wickets so far, it's a notable milestone.

James Wharton is trying to steer Yorkshire into the lead with a few wickets still in the shed.

His innings began with a thick edge wide of the slips cordon but since then he's driven Tom Scriven really smartly down the ground for four and put away two poor balls with a flick to fine leg and a cut through point.

He's 31 not out with Jonny Tattersall on 14.

But batting remains tricky in LE2.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Northants' Zaibpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 9 September

    Northants 177-8 v Derbyshire

In the battle of Division Two's bottom two, Northants looked in real bother at 89-6 but Justin Broad (45) and Saif Zaib have recovered some respectability for the hosts at Wantage Road.

Broad fell just short of his half-century but no such trouble for Zaib (59no), who is on a mission to salvage a batting point or two.

  13. wicket

WICKET Bohannon c Robinson b Raine 49published at 15:04 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 88-4

Breakthrough! Lancashire lose a key wicket!

Josh Bohannon had been stuck in the 40s and walks after an appeal for caught behind.

Ben Raine has his third scalp of the innings, drawing the batter forward and inducing an edge low to Durham keeper Ollie Robinson.

George Bell is in next and he'll be at the non-striker's end while Matty Hurst faces Chemar Holder.

  14. Postpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 88-3

Josh Bohannon drives Chemar Holder to cover for one to move to 49 and Matty Hurst gets four with a nudge to third man.

Lovely timing, glancing off the face of the bat.

Four more guided wide of the slips and through third man.

Holder has gone for 46 in six overs.

  15. wicket

WICKET Gubbins c Finch b Garrett 24published at 14:58 British Summer Time 9 September

    Kent v Hampshire 115-3

George Garrett has his second of the innings and it is a pearler.

He angles down the Canterbury slope and across the left-handed Nick Gubbins, it takes the outside edge and flies to wicketkeeper Harry Finch.

Nothing for Gubbins to be guilty about there but the 83 run partnership with Vince ends.

  16. 50 runs

50 for James Vincepublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 9 September

    Kent v Hampshire 101-2

An innings full of superlatives from James Vince.

A man at the peak of his powers and making things look much much easier than they really are.

Want to guess the area of the ground the four that brought up his fifty went to?

    The covers, of course!

  17. Postpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 78-3

Big appeal from Ben Raine for caught behind but Josh Bohannon survives.

The ball appears to strike the back thigh pad on the way to the keeper.

Bohannon moves to 48 with two clipped to backward square on the front foot.

  18. 50 runs

Half-century stand for Waite and Dollypublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 9 September

    Worcestershire 166-5 v Warwickshire

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Worcester

Half-century partnership for Matthew Waite and Brett D'Oliveira.

It's a first game back in seven weeks for Yorkshireman Waite after suffering a side-strain injury - but his 35 to date has come fairly quickly, off 48 balls.

Dolly, who is only in his third game back after a shoulder problem, is on a slightly more restrained 41 off 78 balls.

  19. 50 runs

for Tom Bantonpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 9 September

    Somerset 174-4 v Surrey

Fresh off his match-winning innings in the T20 Blast quarter-final last week, Tom Banton reaches an attractive half-century at Taunton in 90 balls.

Twice he reverse-swept Shakib Al Hasan for boundaries before driving Jordan Clark wide of mid-on.

Tom Curran - playing his first Championship match since 2022 - was then flicked for four to fine leg.

And he followed up with a step out to Shakib and drive up and over extra-cover. Really nice.

  20. Postpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 76-3

Matty Hurst picks up his second four, driving Chemar Holder on bended knee through cover for four runs.

That's only his second scoring stroke, but it's a beauty.

Four more drilled past Bas de Leede at point.
