    Essex 94-4 v Notts

Plenty riding on Tom Westley's innings for Essex after their struggles so far - and he produces a lovely elegant straight shot to send a Luke Fletcher delivery back from whence it came and to the boundary.

    He's up to 38no off 54 balls.

Matthew Hibbert‘s question (11:41 BST), has a county game ever finished inside one day? The answer is at least one: Kent vs Worcestershire, Tunbridge Wells on June 15 1960 Kent won by an innings and 101 runs.

Mr Ostler, currently watching Essex vs Notts, Chelmsford

Don't think Leics v Yorks is going to quite match that, although they're giving it a go...

  4. Postpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 167-4 v Gloucs

Jack Davies is off the mark with a crunching cover drive, played from the crease as Archie Bailey bowls wide of off stump.

Zafar Gohar is in the attack now and there's a bit of turn and bounce straight away for the slow left-armer.

The third ball however is two wide and smashed through the off side for four.

  5. Postpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 9 September

    Kent v Hampshire 61-2

An enormous lbw shout against James Vince.

It looked like it was heading leg side.

Kent desperately want Vince gone...he scored a double-century in the reverse match.

  6. wicket

WICKET Iyer c Robinson b Potts 7published at 14:06 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 49-3

That early cloud cover has part burned away over an increasingly picturesque Chester-le-Street.

Out! Matt Potts has his first scalp of the match!

Venkatesh Iyer is half forward with a loose forward block, edging at waist height to keeper Ollie Robinson.

Matty Hurst is in next and Durham are firmly in control.

  7. wicket

WICKET Hose c Yates b Barnard 33published at 14:06 British Summer Time 9 September

    Worcestershire 116-5 v Warwickshire

Ex-Pear gets ex-Bear as Adam Hose is caught at second slip off Ed Barnard, well taken by a diving Rob Yates.

Disappointing for Hose, who had been looking set for a big score, having played a restrained innings - off 89 balls.

  8. wicket

WICKET Benkenstein c Verreynne b Lord 4published at 14:05 British Summer Time 9 September

    Essex 86-4 v Notts

Rob Lord of Nottinghamshire celebrates taking the wicket of Luc BenkensteinImage source, Rex Features

Not the County Championship debut young Luc Benkenstein was hoping for.

The 19-year-old is caught in a couple of minds and ends up nicking Rob Lord behind to the keeper.

Notts had to wait a while today to get proceedings under way due to morning rain at Chelmsford - but they are firmly on top this afternoon and Lord has 2-22.

  9. wicket

WICKET Cooke b Robinson 17published at 14:03 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 135-7

That is an absolute peach from Ollie Robinson.

    Top. Of. Off.

Nothing Chris Cooke could realistically do about a ball as good as that. Just nod and walk off.

One bail off, the rest of the stumps untouched.

  10. Postpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 47-2

Bas de Leede is bowling his first spell of the match and Josh Bohannon is forward, pushing the Dutch all rounder into the off side.

Bohannon moves to 25 with two gently pushed on the front foot to backward point.

What Surrey fans need to understand is that sympathy is going to be limited when you have: two overseas internationals opening the bowling, two former test cricketers opening the batting, the recent England keeper, another England player bowling. Adding in Shakib into that mix feels like overkill, no? And I haven’t even got into the farming of the best players from other counties: Clark, Lawrence, Overton, Fisher. Patience with moaning wears thin.

  12. Postpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 135-6

Chris Cooke and Dan Douthwaite's alliance is worth 31.

It has just been a case of taking down the bad balls and surviving the good ones.

Plenty from the latter column with Ollie Robinson back into the attack for the first time this afternoon - just one run from the over.

Douthwaite is put in trouble by one which stays very low from Henry Crocombe - an interesting development if the pitch is starting to get a bit 'up and down' with the older ball.

  13. Postpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 156-4 v Gloucs

Another left-hander for Gloucestershire to bowl at.

Middlesex have four of them in their top six.

Jack Davies defends into mid on and then gets a thick outside edge, dropping the ball just short of gully.

Wicket maiden for Tom Price, who has 3-38!

  14. wicket

WICKET Higgins c Bracey b T Pricepublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 156-4 v Gloucs

Tom Price strikes again to remove Ryan Higgins!

    Game on.

In truth, this is a soft dismissal as the all rounder follows a leg side ball and feathers it to keeper James Bracey.

    Jack Davies to bat next.

  15. Rain threatens as Raine strikespublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 9 September

    Lancashire 40-2 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

This was a good toss to win from a Durham point of view as they were able to put Lancashire in on a track which has been under the covers for the last two days.

No play was possible this morning because of drizzle. We eventually got underway at 12.50pm and within seconds Ben Raine had the first wicket of the day, as Luke Wells edged the first delivery of the game to the keeper.

Raine got a wicket with the first ball of the last match at Somerset as well. He also bowled Keaton Jennings today for nine, to leave Lancashire 15-2 in the ninth over. Both dismissals brought about wicket maidens.

The lights are on and there's rain in the air, although the forecast for later today is not too bad.

Despite the great start, Durham have not managed to bowl a side out twice in a Kookaburra game. This is match number five using one. Will they eventually be able to press home their advantage this time?

  16. Postpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 40-2

Bohannon drives Holder to cover and that's a great stop from a diving Alex Lees.

But there's no stopping the fourth ball of the over, carved with deft timing through backward point for four.

Bohannon keeps the strike with a single pushed to deep point.

  17. wicket

WICKET: Lyth c Cox b Holland 10published at 13:53 British Summer Time 9 September

    Leics 98 v Yorks 21-2

    Both Yorkshire openers now gone!

Adam Lyth drives at at full one just outside off from Ian Holland and edges behind.

    Or does he?

Lyth hates the decision. Stands leaning on his bat looking at the umpire.

Leicestershire were up straight away, as was the umpire's finger.

Did he hit his pad instead of ball?

Impossible to say without ultra edge.

Somerset have an entire side, bar their new Kiwi lad, of academy graduates. Including six of the top eight being 25 or younger. Surrey have four academy graduates in their whole XI. Geddes is the only player under 25. I think Anon #1 (12:43) makes a good point.

  19. Postpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 9 September

    Kent v Hampshire 43-2

It isn't a County Championship round until James Vince has planted his front foot and driven to the boundary.

Joey Evison overpitches and Vince will not miss out on that.

Evison readjusts next ball, goes a little too short and Vince punishes him off the back foot through the covers.

There really is nothing better than watching Vince bat.

  20. Postpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 9 September

    Somerset 115-3 v Surrey

Whatever you think of Shakib Al Hasan's signing, it's simply glorious for the over rate and spectators at Taunton are getting full value for money.

A minimum of 20 overs of spin a day should be compulsory.

To both get the day's play completed on time and to provide more variety in the game.

Indeed, esteemed cricket writer Scyld Berry once suggested three-day matches of 110 overs a day to guarantee more spin is bowled in domestic cricket.

Tom Abell has stepped down to flick Shakib through midwicket for four and late cut him for another boundary. He's now 37 not out with Tom Banton on 12.
