That's all from us for today - and for the Test summer!

It's been a successful one for England despite it ending with a loss. Five wins from six matches, two series victories and a chance to look at a number of new, promising players.

The next red-ball assignment for Brendon McCullum's side is in Pakistan in October before they face New Zealand in the run-up to Christmas.

We'll be back for those but there is plenty more cricket to be played before the summer is done.

The T20 series against Australia starts on Wednesday, that's followed by five ODIs - and England women are in action against Ireland right now.

Today is all about Sri Lanka, though, and you can read Stephan Shemilt's report on their famous win here.

Thanks for joining us - do come back for the white-ball fun in the next couple of weeks. Until then, goodbye!

Brendon McCullum won't do a traditional sit down method and look back on this as a group. Someone like Ben Duckett. He has played well this summer but I haven't seen him hit over the top straight. The shot he played was unusual. I would be questioning that without dampening how aggressive he has been.

It will be more the options they took in the first innings. They don't want to dampen the attacking nature they have had. England have definitely changed how they think about batting. They slipped back into the old way in this game, possibly because they got frightened by the conditions.

It is all a learning curve for this group.

  3. 'Bold approach is what has given us success'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 9 September

More from batter Joe Root, speaking to TMS on England's batting approach: "You can laud it when it comes off. When it doesn't always come off it might not look like traditional dismissals but Nissanka was hitting over mid-on and mid-off last night.

"When you are 127 not out you can look back and say what a brilliant innings it was. He was brave enough to take the challenge on and that is what we pride ourselves on as well - how can you knock bowlers off a length, how can you make it difficult for them to build pressure on you.

"Some of our guys have a different method to how I would do it and that is what makes us such a good team when we are at our best because we compliment each other really well and find a different way of getting teams to bowl away from where the danger is.

"Over the last couple of years that is what has made us have the success we have had."

  4. 'Coldplay can't be number one every week'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 9 September

England batter Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "Not so much this week but it has been a good summer. We have played some really cricket along the way. We have had new faces come into the team and some really exciting prospects off the back of that. We are constantly learning and evolving as a group and it is nice to contribute to that.

"I don't think we played our best cricket this week and that is going to happen from time to time. Coldplay can't be number one every week.

"My point being is we are always trying to move the game forward. We wanted to keep our catchers in and as batters want to find ways off putting opposition under pressure. We are not always going to get it right all of the time. For 90% of the summer we have. We have shown what a good team we can be when we play in that matter.

"It is important we are authentic to what we are as a team and what brings out the best in our individual players."

  5. 'One of the happiest moments of my career'published at 13:41 British Summer Time 9 September

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva: "There was lots of emotion in the team room. It's one of the happiest moments of my career.

"It's a big moment. We had a tough time previously and to come back here and get a win in England under English conditions is good for me, my team and my country.

"I think taking those wickets was vital. The moment Pathum Nissanka came on he performed well. It's a good moment and I think we can beat other teams in their home country."

This is the seventh time England have batted first and reached 260 three wickets down and lost.

  7. 'I just wanted to enjoy it'published at 13:39 British Summer Time 9 September

Sri Lanka's player of the series Kamindu Mendis: "It's a good win in these conditions. We did really well, especially the seamers and the batters did really well today.

"In these conditions, you have to face very difficult situations but I just wanted to enjoy it. That's it.

"I just made small changes, not big ones. It's a big deal but you have to be confident in your ability and enjoy your game.

"It's always a challenge facing seamers in England."

  8. 'Very special'published at 13:37 British Summer Time 9 September

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva, speaking to TMS: "It is very special, winning in England. The boys were tough enough to handle the pressure and get into some scenarios.

"It is not comfortable. There was hard work put in by the bowlers and batters. We were there in every match - had positives points. The boys wanted to win in the end.

"Credit to all of the bowlers. They have been on target from ball one. In the second innings they were spot on.

"He was in form the last couple of years and doing well in white-ball format. He has proved he is the best opener in Sri Lanka right now."

  9. 'We have to keep looking for ways to evolve'published at 13:35 British Summer Time 9 September

England's player of the series Joe Root: "It's been a good summer, we've played good cricket and it's always nice to play. It's great to see this team continually evolve and see some new faces come in to add to the depth.

"I feel good. It's a fickle this game and you have to keep working hard to stay level. I love playing in this team there's some great lads. You turn up and just want to get stuck in every day.

"Long may the success of this team continue. I think we came up against different conditions in this game and unfortunately this game didn't work quite how we wanted it to. We have to keep looking for ways to evolve and keep getting better."

It is a poor end to the summer but if you are Brendon McCullum and Rob Key they will say they have won lot of Tests without senior players, seen more about some players and introduced others into the mix.

It is a learning experience. You don't become the best Test player straight away. It is about learning from these losses.

  11. 'It has been a massive honour' - Pope on captaincypublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 9 September

More from Ollie Pope, speaking to TMS about bowling the spinners in bad light late on day two: "That was on me to stay on. We wanted to keep moving the game forward. I thought there was a lot of weather about on Sunday so I wanted to keep moving the game forward. Dropped catches happen. That is fine.

"Looking back if we had batted on day three like we can it would have been a different story. They bowled well and we weren't up to it."

On the captaincy: "Whenever Ben is ready it is all his. I have loved it. It has come with its challenges. I know there has been lot of chat about my form and that has been enhanced by the fact I was captain. I have loved trying to take 20 wickets and it has been a massive honour.

"It's not the clean sweep we wanted but to get the series win is a very proud moment. I have loved every bit of it."

  12. 'We were outplayed for the last day and a session' - Popepublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 9 September

England captain Ollie Pope, speaking to TMS about his first-innings hundred: "It was pleasing. Throughout the series, obviously a new role for me and trying to get used to the balancing act. I feel I have done it better this game but when in a losing cause it doesn't feel quite the same.

"I was proud of myself and the way I have dealt with all of the chat around over this series. That has been my biggest improvement over the last few years. I am proud with how I dealt with that. From a batting point of view that was pleasing."

On the match overall: "We felt we were in a really good position and were outplayed for the last day and a session. We didn't bat our best yesterday and didn't bowl our best. We should have been able to put a lot more on the board with the bat.

"We could have liked to have 400 on board in that first dig but felt there was fair bit in wicket and felt we could bowl them out for a fair bit less than us. It was my decision to stay on and bowl more spin. It nearly paid off. A few chances went down but that is cricket. We had a poor day three and credit to Sri Lanka as well.

"We weren't at our best but that was a brilliant knock from Nissanka as well. There are a couple of good lessons we can learn from day three."

Winning a Test is the greatest feeling but it takes a lot of hard work. England will have to sit in the dressing room having won the series but lost the game. They have relaxed, switched off and been a bit blasé.

Sri Lanka have completely dominated the game on days two, three and four.

Pathum Nissanka is named player of the match for his match-winning century.

He's asked why he wasn't picked in the first Test and just smiles sheepishly before saying, "I don't know."

Plenty of Sri Lanka supporters will be wondering what the thinking was given how well he played at The Oval.

It has been a tremendous effort from Sri Lanka. They adjusted well to the conditions and outbowled the England seamers.

They hung in there after having a very poor first day. It is what they need to do more - maintain that intensity and belief. If they do they will win a lot more.

It is a hammering. Sri Lanka have been outstanding. Nissanka has played one of the great Test innings. These have been completely English conditions all week.

England felt like 325 would be enough. I look back at day two and when England bowled the off-spinners for 17 overs. It was like they didn't think Sri Lanka could beat them.

    Test-match cricket surprises you.

I get a feeling one or two of the England players have niggles but that is one hammering from a position of huge strength on day one.

  17. Atkinson rested for Australia ODIspublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 9 September

Some news to bring you and Gus Atkinson, who did not appear to be at 100% late in this Test, will be rested for the forthcoming one-day international series against Australia.

He was originally name in the squad for the five-match series later this month but has been replaced by Olly Stone.

The first match of that series is at Trent Bridge on 19 September. There are three T20Is before that, though, starting in Southampton on Wednesday.

It is a really good reminder for the England players.

They haven't been tested at times this summer. Maybe they have been missing real competition and when they got it they couldn't respond yesterday against some high-quality bowling.

A disappointing end to an otherwise successful Test summer for England.

They were missing key players in Zak Crawley, Mark Wood and, of course, captain Ben Stokes but they still had the chances to take this match away from Sri Lanka.

They didn't take them and full credit to Dhananjaya de Silva's side. They took full advantage to claim a famous win - and they coasted to it in the end.

Pathum Nissanka's is the 10th four-innings match-winning century against England. It is only the fifth time a Sri Lanka player has made a century in a successful fourth-innings chase.

The only one to do it outside of Sri Lanka was Kusal Perera against South Africa.
