Summary

  1. SL 111-2published at 21 overs

    Target 219

Chris Woakes ends a very threatening set with by nipping one past Angelo Mathews' outside edge for the third time in the over.

Given Mathews' experience, England will know how important it is to get him early in what could become a very nervy Sri Lanka chase.

A run-out does look like an option. It's just the nerves creeping in, as simple as that.

  3. SL 110-2published at 20.4 overs

    Target 219

Goodness me, it's all happening now.

Chris Woakes beats Angelo Mathews with another beauty and with the pressure building, the experienced Sri Lankan calls for a very risky single.

Pathum Nissanka has to put a dive in but the throw is just off target in any case. A direct hit and he'd have been in trouble.

Brilliant catch by Bashir. How disappointing that must be for all these England supporters that want us to lose.

    Beauty from Chris Woakes.

So nearly that quick wicket England want as he squares up Angelo Mathews with one that angles in a touch before moving away late to beat the edge.

A bit of hope for England but Sri Lanka are still well placed to win this game.

  7. SL 109-2published at 20 overs

    Target 219

Angelo Mathews is the new batter for Sri Lanka and gets off the mark with a single.

A successful over for Gus Atkinson, though, as he claimed his first wicket of the match. England need a couple more quickly if they are going to ramp up the pressure on Sri Lanka.

Little moments of brilliance in the field is what you need. It was a good shot that skimmed to Bashir. A great catch!

That's a great catch, diving away. Bashir fields in quite low-profile positions and he's taken a stunning catch.

It's a bit of brilliance that can change a game.

    Kusal c Bashir b Atkinson 39 (SL 108-2)

    What a catch!

Short ball from Gus Atkinson and it's taken on by Kusal Mendis.

He top-edges the pull shot but looks like he might get away with it before Shoaib Bashir throws himself to his left at fine leg to hold onto a fantastic grab.

    England needed that that.

  11. SL 106-1published at 19 overs

    Target 219

A couple of strangled appeals in the Chris Woakes over.

The first comes as Jamie Smith takes the ball down the leg side but it flicked Pathum Nissanka's thigh pad rather than the bat on the way through.

The next is for lbw but it was high and heading down leg. Other than that it looked good...

The little symbol you use whenever a wicket goes down looks like a box of popcorn. Which when England have collapsed during this game was actually quite appropriate.

  13. SL 101-1published at 18 overs

    Target 219

The 100 comes up for Sri Lanka as Pathum Nissanka nudges the ball just wide of short leg, into a gap and is able to scamper back for two.

Gus Atkinson keeps him quiet for the remainder of the over, angling the ball in at the stumps, offering the Sri Lanka opener absolutely no width.

England will be looking for a breakthrough to get it moving. They just need a few quick wickets to get the momentum going.

  15. SL 99-1published at 17 overs

    Target 219

Just a single from the over, steady start all round.

Some encouragement for Chris Woakes and England, though. Break this partnership quickly and they'll feel like they're right back in this.

  16. SL 98-1published at 16.3 overs

    Target 219

    Good start from Chris Woakes.

After a leading edge second ball lands safely in the off side, the third is nicked by Pathum Nissanka but falls a good yard or two short of Harry Brook at second slip.

A Sri Lanka win would be better for cricket. People who just want to see England win no matter what have to realise that the future of the Test game is in serious doubt around the world. If smaller nations just get hammered every time they play, they will stop sending touring sides or supporting Test matches. England did themselves no favours getting into this situation with weird batting tactics, but that is the wider context. Cricket first, England second.

  18. SL 98-1published at 16 overs

    Target 219

After five dot balls, Kusal Mendis shows a full face of the bat to the last and pushes firmly through mid-off.

Ollie Pope gives chase but can't flick it back in time. Four runs to get Sri Lanka up and running on day four.

For England to win they need those early wickets. They need to not put pressure on too early.

I'd be tempted to just wait. Bowl dots, bowl maidens and build that pressure gradually.

  20. SL 94-1published at 15.1 overs

    Target 219

Well, the first ball is a good one for you, George.

Gus Atkinson fires it down the leg side. No chance of a wicket or a run.
