Summary

We all know how reticent Ben Duckett is to leave the ball but with Tim Southee getting this new ball to swing and seam, he is forced to let a couple go by in this over.

A maiden and batting does not look easy right now.

All eyes on Jacob Bethell. He gets his opportunity to bat at three in Test match cricket. It’s going to be the best time to bat days two and three.

  3. Eng 9-1published at 4 overs

    Trail by 339

Jacob Bethell walks out at number three on his Test debut with the new ball doing all sorts...

He survives his first ball. That's his first job done but plenty of work still to be dine.

Meanwhile, ball-tracking shows a review would have been in vain for Zak Crawley. Umpire's call with the ball just brushing leg stump.

Zak Crawley's struggles against New Zealand continue.

It's a very full, swinging delivery from Matt Henry and the England opener plays all around it.

He's hit on the pad shin height and, after a long wait, the umpire's finger goes up.

Was it sliding down leg? Crawley must be asking Ben Duckett that very question but they decide not and he walks off without reviewing.

This looks like a nightmare scenario for England, ball starting to swing just as they finish off New Zealand. Next hour or so could decide this game.

I'm not sure what's causing me more stress...watching Zak Crawley play and miss or trying to get this report finished for work tomorrow morning.

With the way England have been batting recently, the priority has to be to avoid the follow-on!

Tim Southee is getting the ball to talk early but receives a word from umpire Rod Tucker for running down the pitch in his follow through.

Ben Duckett is being made to work but is not getting bogged down, twice pouncing on opportunities to clip the ball off his hip for two.

A poor start from England. NZ innings should have been wrapped sooner. Too much short stuff in swinging conditions. Could be a tricky opening spell for England with the bat.

    Rob in Eastbourne

Steady on chaps - this ‘bowl at the stumps to a tailender’ strategy could really take off! In other news - Brydon Carse looks a proper find. He’s been excellent and the most threatening bowling.

    Tattz in Harborne

So happy Chris Woakes was wicketless. Maybe now England will remember how awful he was in the Ashes in Australia last time around and won’t consider him next year!

Matt Henry hits back with two lovely deliveries following that boundary.

Ben Duckett was beaten all ends up on each occasion but then nudges a single to square leg to get down the other end.

England are off the mark in style.

Too full from Matt Henry and there's Ben Duckett driving handsomely down the ground for four.

Zak Crawley averages just 11.13 in 15 innings against New Zealand so far in his Test career - since the turn of the century only Marlon Samuels has played as many innings with as low an average against an opponent (9.81 vs Sri Lanka).

He might be on the brink of retirement but Tim Southee has still got it.

A beauty second ball, perfect length to draw Zak Crawley forward before the ball hoops away and only just beats the outside edge.

Crawley swings and misses later in the over before another gorgeous delivery to end the over.

Maiden to start and already it seems Southee has the ball on a string.

Tim Southee has the new ball in hand and is ready to bowl his first over in the final Test series of his career.

It's Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in the middle for England.

Not too sure I'd be writing Chris Woakes off completely just yet, Arjun. At home, he's still an extremely skilful operator. Away from home, it is a different story though.

He went wicketless, there were four wickets apiece for Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir with Gus Atkinson taking the other two.

Jonathan France: Look at that…. Who’d have thought! Full, straight, gone! NZ all out!

Greg: Well played Glenn Phillips but it was standard fare from England although only conceding 96 for the last three wickets is quite good by their standards!

Arjun Singh: Chris Woakes is done. Mid 70s, can’t produce a swinging delivery to challenge the edge.

I thought it was a good pitch for everyone. What England's bowlers didn't do with the new ball was get their lengths right first up. They were a bit too short and that's what New Zealand will probably learn from that.

  16. Postpublished at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

A decent effort from extras then but it was Kane Williamson who top-scored for New Zealand with 93.

Glenn Phillips finishes unbeaten on 58, a very handy innings for the Black Caps and now it is over to the bowlers.

With swing and seam on offer for the England bowlers this morning, Tim Southee, Will O'Rourke and Matt Henry will be looking forward to getting started.

England finished this innings conceding 42 extras, the most they've conceded for five years in a Test innings.

The last time they conceded so many was coincidently also in New Zealand, leaking 54 extras as New Zealand piled on 615-9 in an innings victory in Mount Maunganui.

Bowled 'im with a brilliant yorker!

One ball was all Brydon Carse needed this time. He arrows the ball in at off stump and knocks it out of the ground.

Perfectly executed and far too good for Will O'Rourke. No shame in getting out to that as a number 11.

That's what you all wanted, right? Better late than never...

Another tailender, another England attack refusing to bowl fast balls at his wickets or feet. Yay.

    Tom in St Albans

All this emphasis on bowlers who hit 85mph...yet still Chris Woakes gets selected on an overseas tour...isn't there a stat about his difference in average home to away?! Must have agreed to wear a bucket hat in all interviews.

    Jasper in Gran Caneria

When you've got a number 11 at the crease with an average of two, wouldn't it be an idea to bowl at the stumps? Dreadful by Brydon Carse.
