This is about as tough as it gets for a Test number three. Ball moving, two quality bowlers bang on the money. He only has one run, but it would be hard to argue Jacob Bethell doesn't have the technique or temperament for the job.

  2. Eng 31-1published at 12 overs

Ben Duckett keeps England ticking over with a leading edge into the covers for a single. They all count and the tourists will take them however they come in these conditions.

Jacob Bethell sees off the last couple of balls in the over and we're going to see a change of bowling.

Another debutant, Nathan Smith is coming on to bowl in Tests for the very first time.

New Zealand have certainly got their lines right this morning with 60% of deliveries in the channel and 17% wide, by comparison England bowled 42% in the channel in the first 10 overs yesterday and 31% wide.

  4. Eng 30-1published at 11 overs

    Duckett 29, Bethell 1

You certainly can't fault Jacob Bethell's temperament so far.

He's a naturally aggressive batter but he's accepted that this is no time to try and show off your full array of shots and is digging in well.

Just one not out from 20 balls but Bethell, alongside Ben Duckett, is doing a job for England.

Everyone keeps banging on about how Bethell - who is only 21 - has no first-class centuries. Yet, even at his age, he’s scored a 93. Would he truly be a meaningfully safer bet if he’d scored seven more runs against Kent last summer?

That flurry from Duckett spoiled the 10-over stat - 29 is the joint-fifth lowest England score after 10 overs under Bazball (59 innings where they've batted 10+ overs). But the first time they scored under 30 in first 10 overs without losing at least two wickets.

    Trail by 319

Big movement off the seam for Matt Henry to end the 10th over.

It takes the ball well past Jacob Bethell's inside edge and the lbw appeal from New Zealand is short-lived.

    That was far too high.

  8. dropped catch

Duckett dropped on 23published at 9.3 overs

    Eng 28-1

    Let-off for Ben Duckett.

Matt Henry angles the ball across to find the outside edge and the ball just carries to second slip.

It dips on Tom Latham and the New Zealand skipper can't hold on.

As is so often the case, the drop is followed by a boundary. Nice drive through mid-off from Duckett.

  9. Eng 24-1published at 9.1 overs

Cheers from the England fans at the Hagley Oval and a big smile on the face of Jacob Bethell as he nudges the ball to leg for his first run in Test cricket.

15-1 is England's lowest score after 8 overs in the Bazballistic era. Previously 18-1 (v SA, 1st inns, Lord's 2022; and v India, 2nd inns, Rajkot, in Feb).

  11. Eng 23-1published at 9 overs

I mean, what's not to be optimistic about when Ben Duckett is driving Tim Southee beautifully down the ground for four?

He gets two more to end the over, another drive, this one skewed to the right of mid-off but always safe.

Eight from the over, comfortably England's best of the innings so far.

Come on, folks, there's a long night ahead, a little bit of optimism might do us all a bit of good...

Ed O'Toole: England's openers need to see off this new ball spell. If so, then runs are there. Could also see them crashing to 50-5 too. What will it be?

Thomas Knights: Zak Crawley is mediocrity personified. Four hundreds in 50 tests and one in his last 20 is not good enough yet he is undroppable, if only the same could be said about his catching.

  14. Eng 15-1published at 8 overs

No such luck for Jacob Bethell as Ben Duckett pushes a single first ball of the over.

Bethell is still out there battling and search for his first run(s) in Test cricket.

He's beaten by another beauty from Matt Henry, nothing he could do about it. The young left-hander just has to hang in for now.

The wait for a run continues as Henry makes a very good stop off his own bowling to cut off a lovely straight drive from Bethell.

    Good running.

Ben Duckett drops the ball into the off side and calls Jacob Bethell through for a quick single.

He'll keep strike. Given the conditions at the moment, the debutant might not mind that.

Wait until the shine has come off that new ball and it's a bit softer if you can, Jacob...

  16. Eng 13-1published at 6.4 overs

Width from Tim Southee and Ben Duckett is quick to punish it.

A superb drive on the up, through extra cover for four to just ease the pressure a little.

I think this wicket is going to turn into a belter to bat on, so for England to win this game, I think it’s going to stay a really healthy pitch for the next two or three days.

England have an opportunity, I think it’s going to be a high-scoring game. Hopefully, from England’s point of view, one of their top order or two or three of them can get England a first-innings lead, which they need to win this game.

Ben Duckett has left consecutive deliveries for only the second time in his Test career. The first instance was in his debut innings way back in 2016 in Chattogram.

  19. Eng 9-1published at 6 overs

Another maiden and it ends with a play and a miss from Jacob Bethell on the drive.

Some of the slips thought they heard a noise ball passed bat but after a chat, Tim Latham opts against a review. Replays show there was daylight between bat and ball.

Probing stuff again from Matt Henry regardless.

Jacob Bethell does not have a first-class century to his name. In fact he's the first England batter to make his Test debut without having scored one since Mike Gatting in 1978.
