Summary

  1. NZ 348-9published at 90.5 overs

Brilliant ball from Brydon Carse to start the over, jagging it back to cut Glenn Phillips in half.

But it's too high to hit the stumps and beats Ollie Pope as he dived to his left. Four byes.

Phillips then punches through the off side for a couple before pinching a single fifth ball to keep strike if Will O'Rourke can keep the last ball of the over out...

Glenn Phillips has power, intent and timing but a deft touch as well.

  3. NZ 341-9published at 90 overs

    Phillips 55, O'Rourke 0

Glenn Phillips begins the over by clattering the ball through the covers for four.

He only gets one more from the over, though, before Will O'Rourke keeps out an inswinger from Chris Woakes.

Would that have hit the stumps? Maybe, although it looked a little high.

Since the start of 2023, only Sri Lanka and Australia have a lower percentage of deliveries hitting the stumps to number 11 batters than England (9%).

  5. 50 runs

50 for Glenn Phillipspublished at 89 overs

    NZ 335-9

Glenn Phillips reaches his fifth Test fifty.

Worked to deep backward square for a single to get to the milestone from 77 balls. A valuable knock for New Zealand.

Will O'Rourke plays and misses at the next ball but easily keeps out the last.

New Zealand continue to tick along.

    Glenn Phillips is rapid!

He had to be and he needed the perfect dive as well to make his ground.

The fielding was good but not good enough to do for Phillips.

    NZ 333-9

Good running or the end of the New Zealand innings.

Glenn Phillips come sprinting back for two after slicing the ball down to deep third.

He puts in the dive but is it enough to get him home before Ollie Pope takes the bails?

Jonathan France: Why do we insist on bowling short and wide to number 11? Attack the stumps. Bring everything into play. This is why we struggle to remove the tail of Test teams.

Ross Matthewman: Bowl. At. The. Stumps. Why is Brydon Carse refusing to make the tailenders actually play?

England's quicks have found a lot more movement through the air this morning compared to the first 10 overs on day one.

Average swing is up from 0.73 degrees to a healthy 2.0 degrees so far today. New Zealand's quicks will be licking their lips.

  10. NZ 332-9published at 88 overs

A leg bye gives Chris Woakes one ball at Will O'Rouke but once again, he doesn't have to play a shot.

Slightly too short and swinging away, wide of off through to Ollie Pope.

Not exactly textbook bowling at a tailender so far this morning from England.

    Outrageous from Glenn Phillips.

Down on one knee to Chris Woakes with what can best be described as a reverse Dil-scoop over slip for four.

    Brilliantly inventive shot.

England really need to get Glenn Phillips out early here. We’ve struggled to remove the tail recently in both red-ball and white-ball cricket, so if Phillips gets going it could be a long morning session. After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, you don’t want the opposition to score 400!

  13. NZ 327-9published at 87 overs

Brydon Carse gets two balls at Will O'Rourke but doesn't make him play with either of them.

Nice shape but both go through comfortably outside the number 11's off stump.

  14. Phillips dropped on 42published at 86.3 overs

    NZ 326-9

Brydon Carse finds the edge... but the catch is put down.

Just one slip in place, that's Joe Root, and the ball went very quickly to his right.

He threw himself towards it but had to go one handed and the ball just didn't stick.

Very tough chance, it would have been a stunner but it is a drop.

Alex Capel: Chris Woakes bowling mid-70s. How is this guy still getting a gig, but Jimmy Anderson is forced to retire?

    Ouch.

Glenn Phillips sends a top-edge into the grille of his helmet as he tries to whip Brydon Carse away leg side.

That nearly took the helmet right off his head.

He receives a bit of treatment, and a new lid, but is OK to continue.

  17. NZ 326-9published at 86 overs

Glenn Phillips is going to play some shots now with just one wicket remaining.

He turns down a single early in the over then skips down and has a big swing and a miss as Chris Woakes takes all the pace off the ball.

Phillips keeps strike thanks to a leg bye from the fifth ball of the over and Will O'Rourke is solidly in behind the last delivery.

We had a blustery gale yesterday but it's 10 degrees cooler today which local knowledge means the ball might swing more, which could favour New Zealand's bowlers. England over the last few months have found different conditions in Pakistan, for example, have tested them out, but the assumption was they should understand these conditions a little better.

  19. NZ 325-9published at 85 overs

Will O'Rourke is the last man in for New Zealand and the first ball he faces from Brydon Carse nips away off the seam.

Swing and seam with the new ball already for England this morning. Good news for now but less so when they begin their innings, which they'll hope isn't too far away.

There was always a chance Tim Southee would go with a long handle and England will appreciate that gift.
