Summary

  1. Aus 8-0published at 1.1 overs

Phoebe Litchfield gets a freebie of a full toss from Lauren Filer on her legs which she glances for four. Australia's first boundary.

  2. Aus 3-0published at 1 overs

Phoebe Litchfield and Alyssa Healy fairly watchful to start, as you would expect, and safely negotiate Lauren Bell's opening over.

The only way England can win is if they bowl Australia out. They have an uphill battle but they have to go out believing they can win this game.

  4. Aus 1-0published at 0.3 overs

There's plenty of swing on offer for Lauren Bell's first few deliveries. England need to take a clutch of early wickets to give themselves a sniff of a chance.

Thanks, Matthew. I'm nice to everyone.

Phoebe Litchfield has just scratched our her guard. Lauren Bell is tossing the ball from hand to hand at the top of her mark.

The players have just re-emerged so this looks a good time for me to hand you back to Timothy Abraham.

I'd give him the big build-up but you'd think I was only being nice because he was so lovely to me...

It's safe to say that Ash Gardner enjoys playing against England.

She now has 21 wickets against them in 14 ODIs, and she was a real thorn in their side during the 2023 series where she took 23 wickets across all three formats.

The all-rounder has started ominously here. Truthfully, Australia barely broke a sweat in bowling England out there - it was handed to them.

Alyssa Healy was really on the money with reading her use of Australia's bowlers, then her attack was really on the money. It was an example of Australia executing their plans. England are massively under par here. One thing I would like to see is England's lower order not just collapse. There's a real gap compared with how Australia's tail bat.

Gardner takes two key England wickets

England's slide started with the loss of captain Heather Knight. They were 92-2 before she top-edged a sweep to deep mid-wicket.

When Nat Sciver-Brunt followed in similar fashion two overs later, England were always going to be in trouble.

So much depends on whether one of those two can go big.

Megan Schutt in dismay after Ashes opening over

I said it earlier, Australia weren't perfect. They gave England 25 extras, including that wicket in the first over off a no-ball.

But when you have the depth they do, they can just keep on coming.

Ash Gardner ended with three wickets while Annabel Sutherland, Kim Garth and Alana King all took two each.

England are well short of a competitive score. They didn't capitalise on any of the starts that they made at the crease.

Australia will be very happy with how things have gone; they were exceptional with the ball and reap the rewards of that.

  13. wicket

Bell b Gardner 1 (Eng 204 all out)

    All out inside 44 overs.

Ash Gardner comes back into the attack and knocks back Lauren Bell's off stump with her first delivery of the spell.

It has been a team effort from Australia. England just gifted too many wickets.

  14. Eng 204-9published at 43 overs

The average of England's final two combined does not make it out of the teens. I wouldn't blame you for having a 45-minute nap.

It's all going to be about whether England can get early wickets.

England are in real danger of being bowled out here. They needed Ecclestone to stay in for a lot longer.

Darcie Brown will be feeling extremely happy.

  17. wicket

    Ecclestone c Gardner b Brown 16 (Eng 203-9)

    Urgh.

Sophie Ecclestone covers her face with her bat after knocking the simplest of catches to mid-wicket.

The slide has become a slump.

    Lauren Filer!

She already has her highest ODI score after top-edging a four and guiding another fine.

England get to their 200 from an unlikely source.

It's a hammer blow for England. Danni Wyatt-Hodge walks off with her head down. She flicks it round the corner and it goes straight to fine leg. A steady 38 and England needed her to bat through. Australia are into England's tail now.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge will not be doing any more to boost the total and it's another soft dismissal.

She has just tried to flick the ball off her pads but a leading edge chips a catch straight to fine leg.

Wyatt-Hodge trudges off shaking her head.
