Summary

  1. Rockets 10-0published at 95 balls

    113 runs needed

Consecutive fours to end the set.

The first off Root's bat - a mighty cut that flies past the diving fielder at point.

The second clips Root's legs and runs away for four leg byes.

Birmingham Phoenix have to go out there with intent.

They need to aim to take 10 wickets by bowling very well and almost forcing Trent Rockets into the same mistakes they made.

Trent Rockets should bear in mind how key it is to build partnerships. Maybe trying to reverse hit the second ball in an innings isn't going to be the best option, it is unnecessary to do.

They need to just build partnerships, set the foundation and see it through. They don't need to try and win it in 50 balls.

It should be a simple win for them, but you just don't know what's going to happen.

  4. Rockets 1-0published at 99 balls left

    122 runs needed

    Here we go.

Trent Boult to bowl the first delivery for Trent Rockets - it's a tasty in-swinger, and Tom Banton does well to block it out and run a single.

That brings Joe Root on strike.

Lowest successfully defended totals in The Hundred:

    • 113 - Oval Invincibles v WF (2024)
    • 123 - Trent Rockets v LS (2021)
    • 129 - Welsh Fire v TR (2024)

If Birmingham Phoenix manage to defend their total tonight, it will be the second lowest successful defence in Hundred history.

    Thanks Sam.

Rockets will certainly be the happier, but they could wonder what might have been having had Phoenix 26-4.

Still, WinViz has the visiting side as big favourites.

  7. Rockets need 123 to winpublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 8 August

Trent Rockets will be much the happier at the halfway stage, keeping Birmingham Phoenix to 122-6 on what seems like a decent surface.

Joe Root and co will be out to try and knock of the runs shortly so I'll hand you over to Mike Peter for the chase.

That was impressive from Benny Howell!

A clean and smooth swing of the bat and he kept the shape all the way through. I think it went as high as it went long, if I'm honest.

  9. 6 runs

    Phoenix 122-6published at 100 balls

    Wowzers!

Benny Howell has DEMOLISHED that one! In the slot from Marcus Stoinis and he has clubbed it high and handsome over cow corner.

    That sounded so good.

They scamper two from the last ball, it still seems a few runs light but a positive end to the innings for Birmingham Phoenix.

Dan Mousley had a good run at Trent Bridge last year. He put up some fantastic bowling at the death here and won the game for them.

He is doing something with the bat at the minute, 17 runs off nine balls, so let's see what he can do in these last few balls.

Lockie Ferguson sees the last ball of his 20 smeared over extra cover, once bounce for four.

Good, clean hitting from Dan Mousley.

Ferguson still finishes with an impressive 3-20. Marcus Stoinis will bowl the last five balls.

A terrific shot from Dan Mousley!

I liked how he kept so low to begin with, almost like he was expecting Sam Cook to go for the yorker, but he was just able to use his quick wrists to just flick the ball.

    It went absolutely miles.

  13. 6 runs

    Phoenix 103-6published at 90 balls

Dan Mousley wallops a full toss over deep backward square for six!

That went 86m for some much needed runs for the Phoenix.

The previous ball had gone over mid-off for four and in the space of two balls, Sam Cook's figures go from exceptional to merely very good.

  14. Phoenix 91-6published at 85 balls

Benny Howell is the new batter, joining Dan Mousley, and takes a single from the last ball of Lockie Ferguson's five.

  15. wicket

    Clarke c & b Ferguson 29 (Phoenix 90-6)

Lockie Ferguson puts Joe Clarke out of his misery.

Banged in very short, Clarke tries to flat-bat it down the ground but doesn't get hold of it at all - the ball loops back and Ferguson takes the catch comfortably above his head.

He might not have been going well but that is both set batters gone in the space of a few balls.

That's down to sheer pressure build-up.

They hadn't been hitting the boundaries or pressing the ones and twos, the intent had gone out of the running between the wickets, Liam Livingstone probably felt that he had to do something.

The ball was probably there to hit but he just overhit it and sliced it to deep extra cover.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 81 balls

    Livingstone c Holden b Ferguson 39 (Phoenix 89-5)

Trouble for Birmingham Phoenix as the pressure tells!

Liam Livingstone was hitting it better than Joe Clarke - and now he's gone. The big-hitting all-rounder tries to go over the off side but doesn't get it out of the middle.

The ball hangs in the air for a long time and Max Holden gets underneath it. Important wicket at this stage of the innings.

  18. Phoenix 89-4published at 80 balls

    Clarke 29, Livingstone 29

Another five balls go by without much progress from Birmingham Phoenix.

Just for from Marcus Stoinis' latest set. Joe Clarke is really struggling right now.

The key thing for Joe Clarke and Liam Livingstone right now is remembering to keep the ones and twos coming when the boundaries aren't.

In the last five or six balls, it has all been just trying to find the fence. They are always trying to overhit and play the shot, but you still have to keep the singles coming.

  20. Phoenix 85-4published at 75 balls

Seriously impressive stuff from Sam Cook.

He's hitting his spots and using his variations brilliantly.

After 15 balls, he's conceded only six runs.
