Summary

  1. Phoenix 15-3published at 20 balls

Three down and Jacob Bethell walks out to bat for Birmingham Phoenix.

They're in a spot of bother but they've still got plenty of batting power left to it them out of trouble.

Trent Rockets have bowled superbly so far, though.

In-swinging yorker and Lockie Ferguson strikes!

The ball tails back a long way and Anuerin Donald is hit bang in front.

The only question is whether it was doing too much but Donald took too long trying to decide and is told as much when he belatedly does call for a review.

It works in Phoenix's favour, though, with ball-tracking showing that was smashing into leg stump.

  3. Phoenix 10-2published at 15 balls

The bowlers continue to dominate in the opening stages at Edgbaston.

Just two singles from Sam Cook's first five - still plenty of swing on offer for the quicks.

Aneurin Donald has 450 runs, striking at 216 in T20 cricket in 2025.

No player has ever scored faster in a calendar year (min. 400 runs scored).

  5. Phoenix 8-2published at 10 balls

Useful runs for Birmingham Phoenix as Aneurin Donald paddles sweeps for four.

A disappointing end to an otherwise excellent five from Akeal Hosein.

It's still a brilliant start for the Rockets with both big-hitting Phoenix openers gone.

That's not too bad for the Trent Rockets, is it?

We have got strong hitters coming through this Birmingham Phoenix line-up though, as we have already seen, with Joe Clarke coming into the crease now.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 6 balls

    Smeed c Cook b Hosein 1 (Phoenix 3-2)

An exciting prospect he may be, but Will Smeed has gone early here!

First ball from Akeal Hosein and Smeed tries to sweep it from outside off.

The ball loops up off the top edge and it's a very easy catch for Sam Cook at short fine.

We keep talking about Will Smeed. He was the first player to ever hit 100 in The Hundred and he will always have that on his name.

He is such an excitable little prospect that has grown and developed his game since that moment. This boy is Birmingham Phoenix through and through.

  9. Phoenix 3-1published at 5 balls

Oof. Where did that come from?

After four excellent balls, a horrible wide from David Willey outside off.

Aneurin Donald then pushes a single from the extra delivery.

I'm not sure why Ben Duckett decided to go for that shot so early. There wasn't a fielder down there but it was only ball number four and his second ball.

    That wasn't very clever.

That was David Willey’s 19th powerplay wicket in The Hundred. No player has more in the history of the competition.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4 balls

    Duckett b Willey 0 (Phoenix 1-1)

    Bowled 'im!

Brilliant start from David Willey. He swung the previous ball past Ben Duckett's outside edge and then knocks him over.

Duckett moved across his stumps looking for the ramp, he missed and Willey hits middle stump.

The England star departs without troubling the scorers.

  13. Phoenix 1-0published at 2 balls

Quick single for Will Smeed to get off the mark - and he had to be quick with a direct hit at the non-striker's end.

The players are out and we're ready to go.

Rockets skipper David Willey will open the bowling with Will Smeed and Ben Duckett in the middle for Phoenix.

If you missed the women's match earlier, Birmingham Phoenix came out on top by 11 runs.

Emma Lamb was player of the match for her impressive half-century but Phoenix were made to sweat by Nat Sciver-Brunt.

The England skipper made a quickfire 64 to keep Trent Rockets in the game, becoming the first player to reach 1,000 runs in The Hundred in the process, but the visitors came up just short.
