It feels like Bazball has evolved a bit. At first it was a bit kamikaze, but now it's proper cricket but just very positive. A good team evolves and developments, and I guess you start with the thinking about how you want to play.

    Trail by 259 runs

Mohammed Siraj has his hands on his head after Jamie Smith inside edges on to mid-wicket, but in truth it was nowhere near the stumps. Siraj is lacking some of his usual fire, here.

England in cruise control as they chip away at India's total.

You know, if England need a bowler who can defend a total AND take wickets, there's this lad playing for Lancashire might be worth a look. I think his name is James Anderson...

Simon, looking forward to finishing work

Akash Deep has got a bit of movement from this new ball. We haven't seen much movement at all this game.

  6. Eng 325-5published at 65 overs

India are looking a little bit weary. Exactly how England seemed in the field while Shubman Gill was making hay yesterday afternoon.

It would seem there is plenty of runs left in this pitch. Plenty.

The Hollies are singing Oasis again as Akash Deep wrestles an over back for India with just two runs conceded off it.

Well played Jamie Smith. A great knock from him but his work isn't done. England are well on their way after a few early concerns.

Jamie Smith's counter-attacking rescue act has matured into a superb 150. He reaches the milestone with a late jab behind point off Mohammed Siraj.

If this weather doesn't change I might have to do something with my wardrobe. I flew in for this series with too many long sleeves! But I'm sure it will change...

England trail by 268 runs now as Shubman Gill turns to Mohammed Siraj for some inspiration.

Smith has been so good on the short ball when it comes in the waist-high region. There can be errors when the ball is a bit higher, but there he's very destructive.

  14. Eng 318-5published at 62.4 overs

England starting to up the ante a bit more now.

Jamie Smith dismissively biffs a short ball from Akash Deep for four through the leg side.

A nudge into the on side a ball later takes Smith to 148 off 141 balls.

Nitish Kumar Reddy feels a bit hittable at the moment. His pace is down, and the delivery for the that second four just sat up.

  16. Eng 312-5published at 62 overs

A rather ponderous period is broken by back-to-back boundaries for Jamie Smith, who drives Nitish Kumar Reddy straight down the ground and then pulls the India seamer for four.

Shubman Gill spent a lot of time trying to get the gap between mid-off and the covers right and Jamie Smith still finds a way to hit it with power through the gap.

Good point from Rob who is going camping in Ashbourne (@ 14.41). Always batting second means England will nearly always need to take 20 wickets. Tough on England bowlers.

    Jon, West Malling

Re: Rob @ 14:41, the current crop of bowlers is too inexperienced/not skillful enough to defend totals. But we know the batters chase huge totals. Bowling first makes sense.

Akash Deep bustles in after drinks, and once again nips one between Jamie Smith's bat and pad. Must be the third or fourth occasion that's happened to the England wicketkeeper.

This period feels like the calm after the storm.

When you are top, keep bowling on the same channel, keep bowling a good length. There's time in the game, you try something different and you can concede a lot of runs and the momentum.
