Well we've had contrasting sessions today but England's batters have been in control since Ben Stokes' dismissal. They smacked it around before lunch and played a more conservative session this afternoon. They've continued to put up the runs.

This has been a really good session. England have had to go through the gears and adapt to India's tactics.

Three singles off Ravindra Jadeja in the final over before tea, and England will be fairly happy with their position.

That is a beautiful shot from Harry Brook. He swung, missed then caught it with the back of the bat. England finding all sorts of ways to score now.

Harry Brook with runs off the back of the bat now as he contrives to get over India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant's head for four, bringing cheers from the Edgbaston crowd.

I think it will be very interesting two days if England can limit India to 100 ahead and bat out today. If so, I think Pant will be the key for an Indian win.

Hello. A reverse sweep from Harry Brook off Washington Sundar for four.

Brook then repeats the feat but it's cut off by Mohammed Siraj on the rope.

That's the first one that's really gone off the straight. That was a beautiful delivery from Ravindra Jadeja, we're finally seeing the ball move.

Pedestrian cricket now, really, although Ravindra Jadeja finds a bit of bounce off the pitch.

Washington Sundar is finding an exceptional amount of drift so far in this Test match, comfortably more than any other spinner:

    • Washington: 2.8°
    • Jadeja: 2.1°
    • Root: 1.9°
    • Bashir: 1.5°

If England get the deficit to anything less than 150 then India will not have a clue what to do. Go to quick and you give England time to win, go to slow and you don't have enough time to take 10 more wickets.

Edgbaston is a little more subdued now as India's spinners attempt to stifle England.

Just the solitary run off Washington Sundar, from Harry Brook's bat, to acknowledge but not a whole lot more.

    England run-rate today:

    • Morning Session: 6.37

A combination of the wide plan and slower spin bowling has shackled this English pair post lunch.

The scoring has slowed down because the ball has gone very soft now. That intent is still there so when that second new ball comes out, they'll both be hitting it around again.

Ravindra Jadeja, sunglasses on, continues round the wicket.

Three singles off the over as Harry Brook and Jamie Smith pick the gaps as minds, and bellies, start to turn towards the tea interval.

It's been an extraordinary day of cricket here. We were sat saying that England would need someone to get at least 150 and Jamie Smith has done that before tea, with Harry Brook on track to do the same.

It has been much more conservative batting from England this afternoon though. India's plan is working.

Spin from both ends as Washington Sundar is thrown the ball.

Jamie Smith and Harry Brook turn over the strike seemingly at will. The pair of them have shared a partnership now worth 250 runs.

Here's how Smith reached 150 a little while ago.

It's been a very different session this afternoon compared to the morning session. England have had to dig deep a little bit.

You'd like to see a little bit of spin off the pitch at this stage, halfway through the third day.
