India are so far ahead they should just play freely. I don't care who the teams are, 500 has never been chased in the history of the game. If I was Shubman Gill I would want at least 500 and England at least two wickets down going into that last day.

If I was inside in the India dressing room just play that first session, be cautious and don't let England get wind in their sails with early wickets. Then you can have fun as a batter.

They might have one eye on the weather, but I'm not sure they will be brave enough to make a declaration. They will be wary of Headingley and what happened here last time.

However, if they bowl well they have a great opportunity to win the Test and make it 1-1.

The one concern that I would have is that India had much more movement with the new ball. From what I've seen now, England have to get a little bit of seam into their action because it's a flat pitch.

India are brought up on these kind of wickets. I can't see them collapsing tomorrow, they aren't going to give them anything. They've dominated completely other than about three hours today.

  6. Smith 'a phenomenal player'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 4 July

England batter Harry Brook, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "It was nice to spend some time out there with Smudge [Jamie Smith]. He has a long England career ahead of him. Hopefully we've clawed ourselves back in the game. I just tried to bat as long as I could. Smudge tried to get the momentum back our way. He's a phenomenal player. He just leans on it and goes to the boundary. He's an incredible player.

"I was just trying to bat as long as I could. He's played a phenomenal innings and one he should be proud of. Last year we saw him hit it over the Hollies. To have him in the side at seven is awesome with the depth we've got.

"If I hadn't got out we would not be in this situation now but we saw last week how quickly it can change. Akash and Siraj bowled well. They attacked the stumps with all modes of dismissal in play. Thankfully we've seen the back of Jaiswal and hopefully we can make inroads tomorrow. India are in the driving seat but hopefully we can put pressure with early wickets and make them crumble."

I was glad I wasn't bowling at Jamie Smith and Harry Brook. It was like two different games. India did bowl excellently with both new balls. They put so much press back on the bowler which is their blueprint, but it never felt reckless. As soon as they got through a few hairy moments it was a remarkable display of batting form both them. Jamie Smith's innings was amazing - the exact sort of power and punch you want coming in at seven.

    Where do I start?!

England started the day with a huge deficit but they'll be looking at the day in a positive way. The way India used the new ball was so effective. You have to give India a huge amount of credit for how they bowled but inbetween we witnessed one of the greatest partnerships ever.

Jamie Smith was flying, he was hitting it all around Birmingham and he couldn't be stopped. India tried a few different plans but nothing seemed to stop him.

Harry Brook also played with great maturity. When your partner is hitting it around it can be tempting to join in but he stuck in there and played the tame shots.

But when India took the new ball, they quickly wrapped up England's innings.

England collapsed from 387-5 to 407 all out with Mohammed Siraj finishing with 6 for 70 and Akash Deep picking up 4-88.

By close of play, India were 64-1 with a lead of 244 runs.

Harry Brook more than played his part, scoring 158 runs off 234 balls.

However, England rebuilt superbly through Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, who put on 303 off 368 balls for the sixth wicket to rescue their side from 84-5.

Smith threatened to break Gilbert Jessop's record for England's fastest Test century (76 balls) but had to settle for reaching three figures off 80 deliveries.

He went on to break Alec Stewart's record for the highest men's Test score by an England wicketkeeper and finished unbeaten on 184 (207).

Where to start with the recap of today?

Well, it was a pretty dismal start to day three from England with Joe Root and Ben Stokes departing to consecutive deliveries in the opening 15 minutes.

Harry Brook and Jamie Smith should be livid with the opening bowlers here! Heroically gave England a sniff and the bowlers have thrown it away bowling too short or too full with no consistent line.

    Robin in Sweden

This bowling attack just isn’t right - can’t see any of these being first choice this time next year, apart from possibly Shoaib Bashir. Hopefully Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer in for the next Test. Feel Matthew Potts should be reconsidered too!

There were times in that 1 for 17 we'd have taken a 400-run first innings. Given that, and I know it's a flat track, is India's 587 a result of great Indian batting or toothless English bowling? The pace attack is night and day if you have a healthy squad but this current pace attack is leaving much to be desired.

The pitch isn’t helping England as much as they would have hoped, achieving just 1.0° combined lateral movement with the new ball - considerably less than the new ball in either of the first two innings of the match.

  18. Ind 63-1published at 12 overs

Another maiden, this time from Josh Tongue to Karun Nair.

Jamie Smith has been tidy behind the stumps this evening. He must be exhausted. He's been on the park for all but the first 21.4 overs of England's innings hasn't he?

Its raining in Lichfield about 10 miles north of Edgbaston so suspect the ground is going to get a soaking overnight.

Anyone else be happy with one of those pesky draw things right now?

Though England's innings had two centuries, it reminds me of a county match in the late 1980s or early 1990s when Worcestershire were bowled out for 190 and Graeme Hick made 130 of them.
