If England are so good at batting (which we are) then why not just bat first and put the opposition under pressure? Save the chasing for when we need to chase.

  2. drinks break

England 301-5 at drinkspublished at 60 overs

A curious hour after lunch, but crucially no wickets lost for England.

The umpires decide we need a ball change so drinks are taken.

Apropos absolutely nothing, you need just 14 syllables for the last names of this England XI. Is this a record?

I don't mind what India are doing now, it's much better than before lunch. They are finally sticking to a plan, just aiming for off stump.

There's something building. The bowlers are working very hard, trying to be disciplined and I think something's building up.

  7. Eng 298-5published at 59 overs

India are trying to squeeze England here. Just one run conceded by Akash Deep off that over.

Been discussing this match with a colleague. Can England realistically win without relying on an Indian second innings collapse? If we manage not to capitulate and put up a score of 500+, are we just headed for a rather anticlimactic draw?

A change of bowling for India as Akash Deep is brought back.

Here's that 'drop' from Rishabh Pant from a little earlier.

At one point, India were in a position to enforce the follow on. England have brought it back a lot, this partnership has been brilliant.

  12. Eng 297-5published at 58 overs

Harry Brook dismissively thwacks an overpitched delivery from Nitish Kumar Reddy through wide mid-off for four. Brook met than on the half volley and the ball absolutely raced to the fence.

The Hollies break out into Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer reflecting the fact England are just over 'halfway there'.

Suggesting Jamie Smith to open is plain daft. We have found a round peg for a round hole (and silenced the 'why aren't we picking Foakes?' mob) so why change it? Opening the batting last night after two hard days of keeping wicket would have been brutal.

The ball is soft but it's also credit to the Indian bowlers. They have a plan and they've stuck to it.

The last 20 minutes have been a little bit odd. Perhaps the ball has gone a little bit soft.

Prasidh Krishna jags one through the gate to Jamie Smith. There's a little noise as the ball flies through to Rishabh Pant but India don't appeal, so it must have been his bat brushing his pad possibly.

A couple of nice drives from Smith to fuller deliveries but he picks out the fielder.

Jamie Smith has moved on to 130 from 114 balls. He's looked a little bit shaky in the past few overs.

This 200 partnership between Brook and Smith came better than a run a ball. Since 2000, there have been eight instances of partnerships of over 200 coming at 6.00 rpo or better - three of them have come from England in the past 3 years.
