Excellent drive from Brook. He hits the ball hard, high and in unusual places. I think extra cover is going to become tighter. You can't allow the batter to score in that region. They've got to come in tighter.

    Oh, sublime.

Harry Brook nails a cover drive, straight out of the textbook, to greet Asitha Fernando back into the attack.

The bowler responds well, dragging his length back as Brook gets lucky with an inside edge past his stumps. It's still nipping around a bit for Asitha, who has been the pick of the bowlers so far.

Sri Lanka turn to the left-arm spin of Prabath Jayasuriya, who got through two overs yesterday evening.

No alarms for Brook and Root, as yet. They've looked comfortable throughout, milking six runs off the over to bring up England's 100.

Harry Brook is trying not to hit the ball too hard. That's a feature of his play.

You can see what the bowler is trying to do, he wants the pair to hit across the line. But the full face of the blade is meeting the ball and it's not working.

    So far so good.

Harry Brook with a picture-perfect straight drive for four off Rathnayake, and not to be outshone, Joe Root responds with two more of the same result!

Ben Stokes applauds from the balcony.

We're in for some fun if these two settle in...

Harry Brook comes to the crease prior to the 15th over for the seventh time in his Test career.

He made 87, 111 and 116 on the first three of those occasions, but his fortunes have taken a turn since, with scores of four, three and two.

    How will he fare today?

It's been a classic Joe Root knock so far.

One of the "look up and he's on 20 without you noticing" knocks.

He drives Vishwa Fernando down the ground for two more, timing the ball beautifully.

Ominous signs for Sri Lanka because as their own batting innings proved yesterday, it's a lot easier against the old ball on this pitch.

That ball tailed back in late and it could've easily been lbw, instead it's raced away to the mid-wicket boundary.

    How does he do it?

Full and straight from Rathnayake, angling in to the stumps, but Joe Root somehow whips it past mid-on for four.

    Effortlessly good.

  11. Eng 69-3published at 15 overs

Three wickets in the first hour for Sri Lanka.

A successful start in response to a generally disappointing batting effort yesterday.

They need to be disciplined now, not gift Harry Brook an easy start as he joins Joe Root in the middle.

It's been Sri Lanka's morning so far. The Surrey pair have gone and now the Yorkshire pair are together. They've got to do a bit of rebuilding.

England are scoring quickly but losing consistent wickets. They're in all sorts of bother.

    Another!

More lovely bowling, this time from Vishwa Fernando, who had changed ends and gets immediate success. A teasing delivery outside off stump, Lawrence can't resist, and feathers behind to Dinesh Chandimal.

Lawrence throws away a good start to life as a Test opener.

You feel like Root is always in control. He's gone down with the ball and doesn't really have any opportunity of being caught, it's very much his area.

Inconsistency is costing Sri Lanka at the moment.

Every couple of good balls, is usually followed by something short or wide. On this occasion, Joe Root slashes four more down to deep third.

A nice, crisp shot from Lawrence. He's taken the game on. He's a tall player and hit that ball into leg side. Very much a white-ball cricket shot.

Back-to-back boundaries for Dan Lawrence, one behind square and one in front as Asitha Fernando delivers two half-hearted attempts at bouncers.

Lawrence isn't looking like a new opener at the moment, though Sri Lanka have helped him out a bit with some freebies.

It was a beauty from Asitha Fernando to get rid of Ollie Pope.
