Summary

  1. Tea - Eng 176-4published at 37 overs

A marathon afternoon session comes to an end, with England trailing by 60 and two of their brightest young talents at the crease with a partnership of 51.

Good first hour for Sri Lanka, taking those three wickets, but it's been pretty smooth sailing for England since Joe Root's dismissal.

20-minute break, and then another extended session to come this evening! Get yourselves a cuppa, folks.

  2. Eng 175-4published at 36 overs

    Trail by 61

The 50 partnership comes up between Brook and Smith, and with the spinner whizzing through his over, we'll have time for one more before tea.

The bowlers must be desperate for this break.

Three overs behind, they better get a move on. But it's been a good session for Sri Lanka, they have fought hard again.

  4. How's stat?!published at 15:55 British Summer Time 22 August

Jamie Smith has a monster 80.42 average against left-arm spin in his first-class career, comfortably his highest for any bowling type.

  5. Eng 171-4published at 35 overs

First signs of uneven bounce, the sort that we saw yesterday from Shoaib Bashir and the pea-roller that got Dinesh Chandimal.

Jamie Smith swishes outside off stump but the ball barely gets off the ground.

    A fabulous knock!

50 for Harry Brookpublished at 34.1 overs

    Eng 171-4

    Another half-century for Harry Brook.

It's only taken him 59 balls with four fours, but it's been a masterclass in rotating the strike and keeping the game moving.

He's looked in complete control since he came to the middle, really.

I think Jayasuriya could do with a bit more of a run up. He needs a bit more momentum and it looks like he lacks a bit of bounce.

  9. Eng 168-4published at 34 overs

A productive over for England, they're now just 68 behind.

No signs of slowing down before tea.

That was real aggression from Jamie Smith, he planted that one far back, it looked easy for him.

  11. 6 runs

    Eng 166-4published at 33.2 overs

    Hello!

A skip down the pitch and six for Jamie Smith.

    Lovely.

  12. Eng 160-4published at 33 overs

    So good.

Harry Brook drives Vishwa Fernando for four more. He moves to 47 from 57 balls and there have been so many highlights, including this one from a few overs ago.

The game is still in the balance. England are getting closer. Root has gone and that's always significant. There is a longer tail in the England line up. They can all bat a bit, but no guarantees.

  14. Eng 152-4published at 32 overs

Going through the motions as we approach tea.

My word, this has been a long session. Need a Grandma Wilson update to get me through the next 20 minutes.

Or any other fun grandma stories.

Three singles ticked off the over without Brook or Smith breaking a sweat.

We're watching two batters here who are going to be playing for England (and scoring heaps of runs) for quite a few years, aren't we?

  16. Eng 146-4published at 30 overs

    Trail by 90

The first maiden of the innings!

The honour goes to left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya.

  17. Eng 146-4published at 29 overs

Sri Lanka are just starting to build a little bit of pressure on Harry Brook.

They've got seven fielders on the off side and two on the leg, sticking to a simple but effective plan of bowling outside off stump.

And, right on cue, Brook drives Rathnayake for four straight down the ground. A nice battle is bubbling.

Asitha Fernando has excellent figures so far: 10-0-46-3. We doff our hats to you, sir.

Anonymous: Sounds like Grandma Wilson has dodged the Grandkids "by accident". Classic move.

  20. Eng 138-4published at 28 overs

It's been a weird afternoon, really.

England haven't exactly 'Bazball-ed', but they haven't really had to because of Sri Lanka's plans - which have delivered four wickets and a relative amount of control, but then it's rarely felt like England have been under pressure. And that's shown in the fact there haven't been any maidens today - but you'd still probably think both teams are pretty happy with their position.
