Summary

  1. Day two wickets to fallpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 22 August

Just joining us? Here are today's four wickets to fall, after play was washed out this morning. It's fair to say the pitch has something in it for the Sri Lanka pacers.

Ed, if you're still there, we've had plenty of calls for a Grandma Wilson update.

Is she having a good day? Who's her favourite in the England side? Has she taken a picnic?

    Please let us know.

Hannah, Guildford: I want to grow old like Grandma Wilson.

Asitha Fernando goes for the glory with his first ball to Jamie Smith, but gets the yorker wrong and Smith easily clips it down to fine leg for four.

Big 45 minutes to come before the break, here. One more wicket and then Sri Lanka are in to Chris Woakes and the bowlers.

It's great discipline bowling, if you stay patient something will give. If you keep hitting the seam on this pitch, something will happen and the ball can jag anywhere.

The ball didn't get high off the ground. Chandimal has done really well - he had to dive in front to catch that.

    From nowhere!

Asitha Fernando hangs one out a little wider, and it's the first loose shot from Joe Root all afternoon, getting an edge through to the keeper.

He had been playing so serenely, looking completely at ease.

He trudges off with a frustrated look on his face at that one lapse of concentration which has cost him.

The spinner got nothing and couldn't get the ball to turn. Rathnayake has a massive role here, he needs to give De Silva control.

These Yorkshire batters have steered England out of trouble. There's still a lot of work to do.

Milan Rathnayake desperately rubs the ball against his thigh, a furious attempt at extracting some life out of it.

No luck, though. Batting looks rather comfortable out there, although it usually does look that way when Joe Root's in the middle.

  11. How's stat?!published at 15:00 British Summer Time 22 August

If we look at pace bowlers in the opening 20 overs of this Test, England's average length is 7.71m with 8% going on to hit the stumps. Sri Lanka average is 6.97m, with 16% hitting the stumps.

In summary, Sri Lanka's quicks are 74cm fuller and hitting the stumps twice as much, however leaking at 5.01 runs per over compared to England's 3.20. Classic example of risk versus reward going fuller with the new ball.

I rate that from Ed's Grandma. If you're reading, I hope you're having a lovely day (and that you took a jacket).

Ed Wilson, miffed in Preston: Just driven five long hours from London to Lancashire, with three children in the car, to visit the grandparents. Only to find Grandma has gone to Old Trafford today! Someone tell the stewards her thermos is full of champagne. More importantly, where was my invite?!

It's not easy for the bowlers at the moment with the strong cross wind.

A few quiet overs for England but they keep the score ticking over expertly.

Waiting for another of these beauties from Harry Brook...

I had a look at the pitch and it had hardly any scratches at the business end but nothing for the spinner to aim at. There is a line maybe fifth of stump where there are bare patches and cracks, and I think that's where the bowlers are targeting with the variable bounce experienced yesterday.

  17. Eng 109-3published at 22 overs

Another decent over from Asitha Fernando, continuing to get some movement, but Brook and Root remain undisturbed.

Here's the two wickets he took earlier, and he has remained the most dangerous-looking of the bowlers so far.

No Bazball yet, but England are still scoring at five plus and over. Captain De Silva would like some control, but when runs are leaking as they are now, he won't be able to think of attack. He will have to look to plug the gaps.

  19. Eng 108-3published at 21 overs

Feels like Sri Lanka are missing their own Mark Wood. They lost three early wickets yesterday and then the ball got older, it got easier to bat but Wood's 95mph rockets just came and blasted everything apart.

At the moment, everything's quite pedestrian and they need a point of difference, an X-factor (though Asitha Fernando has bowled very nicely).
