Martin, Poole: The rule about having to go off at 6.30pm is plain daft. No reason at all why they couldn't have bowled two more overs last night to complete the 90.

There's a ripple of applause from a healthy-looking crowd as the players take to the field.

I don't mean to go on about the weather but after the wind and rain of last week, it is great to see a bit of warm sunshine.

Considering the conditions and the pitch, I don't think there's much more that Sri Lanka's bowlers could have done to stop Joe Root.

He looked so comfortable, they could never tie him down even though they actually bowled very well especially in the first two sessions.

Sadly there is no Mike 'king of the rain' Peter on live text duty today (sorry), but look at what that means for the weather.

No chat about Greek philosophers or sentient super soppers needed today. It's glorious at St John's Wood.

    Good luck, Charlie.

If Atkinson plays like he did last night then 11:30 looks a realistic target.

Currently sat listening in hospital while waiting for my ankle ligament reconstruction. Due to go into theatre some time around half 11. Hoping Gus Atkinson can get those 26 runs he needs for the hundred quickly!

Sri Lanka have to start positively, they have got to attack early to get those early wickets. The ball is only eight overs old but they have already spent a whole day in the field, they won't want to be out there much longer.

If they start badly, they are in for a long day.

Simon: It’s sunny, it’s warm, it’s the second day of the Lord's Test. What more do you want?’ How about 90 overs in a day. It's shocking they can’t bowl 90 in six and a half hours, spectators getting short changed!

Fair point, Simon. There were only 24 overs in the first session yesterday. Teams really need to get a wriggle on.

    Sir Alastair Cook
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

What a day we've got in store, if you're a Sri Lanka batter turning up this morning you've got to be thinking it's a great day to have a bat.

It was a special moment yesterday to see Joe Root equal my record, although I didn't always know what to say! But he's a great player and I can't see him stopping any time soon. I don't think we'll be sharing the record for very long!

Gus Atkinson played beautifully yesterday, I can't wait to see if he can get those 26 more runs! He'll be nervous but buzzing at the same time.

He could get on all three Lord's honours boards by the end of one summer!

    It's a glorious day.

We've already seen Gus Atkinson on the outfield this morning, going through his drills and his shadow batting.

  13. Root equals record with more to comepublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 30 August

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport chief cricket writer at Lord's

Root was impeccable in guiding England to victory in the first Test in Manchester on Saturday and the former captain simply picked up where he left off.

This was a century of the highest quality, a sixth Test ton at Lord’s giving Root the share of another record, and an innings that took him past Cook as England’s highest run-scorer in home Tests. He will soon pass Cook as England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer.

While those around him failed to take advantage of the conditions, Root seemed destined for three figures from the moment he clipped his first ball for four. Tucks through the on side would be a feature, along with guides to third man and cover drives.

  14. Root steers England into strong positionpublished at 10:34 British Summer Time 30 August

It was the Joe Root show on day one, as his record-equalling 33rd century steered England into a strong position after being put into bat.

Root’s hit 143 to move level with Sir Alastair Cook for the most Test centuries for England, helping the hosts reach 358-7.

Root added 48 with Harry Brook and 62 alongside Jamie Smith, before a seventh-wicket stand of 92 with Gus Atkinson.

Atkinson is unbeaten on 74 alongside Matthew Potts, who is 20 not out.
