Dan Lawrence was the only England wicket to fall at the end of the day, though he didn't look best pleased with the decision.

Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett will come back tomorrow looking to quickly build upon England's already imposing lead of 256.

Sri Lanka have an established middle order. Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva have been there for a long time now.

But Kamindu Mendis has only played five Tests. He has been fantastic and it's inevitable that he will find himself up the order. I'd like to see him move up in the second innings, give him the chance to set up an innings and bat with the top order with less pressure so he can just focus on himself and not steering the tail or anything like that.

He has a simple game, he plays with a straight bat and plays the short ball very well.

It was an extraordinary innings from Gus Atkinson. He played so many great shots. I was in genuine disbelief. I think he has peaked, I don't think he will play better. The challenge is how close he can get to that level on a consistent basis.

England are desperate to find those lower order runs so they can play the bowlers they want to play.

More from Gus Atkinson on BBC Test Match Special: "It's been an incredible 12 months, I can't quite believe it.

"I can't put it into words, really. A Test 10-for and a Test hundred, I'm kind of just laughing at how surreal it is!

"I think tonight I'll just switch off, have some food and then watch my highlights!"

More from Gus Atkinson to BBC Test Match Special: "I've scored a few hundreds before, when I was about 12 or 13! My last one was in 2018 I think, for Surrey seconds. It's lovely to get my first professional one here.

"I haven't seen the full video of my dad's reaction yet, I did see a clip of it. He's had a good few days here, with the West Indies first and now this one. I came here a few times as a kid with him, watching Test cricket together, so it's nice to be here doing it in front of him and I'm sure he's very proud.

"I don't really remember [the initial feeling]. It was mostly relief and happiness, and I just found it so cool seeing all the team on the balcony and a big group of my mates here in the crowd. It was surreal, a bit of a blur, but such a good feeling.

"To get put in and then end up with 430 is so good, and bowling them out for 200 is more than we could've asked for. We're well ahead of the game after day two with loads of time left. Hopefully we can push on to a big lead tomorrow and then bowl them out again.

"I wasn't really in the discussions about the follow-on. I think because there's so much time left, there's no rush to put them in again. The wicket is getting harder to bat on, you could see a few at the end there going up and down."

Gus Atkinson speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "Yeah, it's very surreal! I've always thought of the Lord's honours board growing up and pictured myself up there for my bowling, so it's incredible to see myself up there with the bat! I couldn't ask for more.

"I didn't sleep that well last night! I don't think I was under that much pressure, I was happy to score 70! Obviously I was thinking about the hundred and then when I woke up, all I could think about was getting back out there and batting. Hopefully I can get a good night's sleep tonight!

"I've always had a lot of belief in my batting. But everything just clicked today really, I felt really good and hitting the ball cleanly. It's just one of those days. Hopefully I can remember what I did today and yesterday, and take it forward."

It was also a special day for Olly Stone, making his first Test appearance since 2021 and taking 2-70.

Sri Lanka made too many mistakes, but it was a fabulous all-round effort from England's seamers.

Chris Woakes, Matthew Potts and Gus Atkinson also took two wickets each, with one for Shoaib Bashir and a run out from Ollie Pope.

That was a perfect hundred from Gus Atkinson. Every shot he played was perfection. He must be a brilliant poker player as he gives absolutely nothing away.

He has played five days at Lord's and is on all three honours boards. It is just remarkable what he has achieved.

As good a hundred I have ever seen.

The pressure England then produced with the four quicks. I thought Matthew Potts was the pick, he got it seaming away, the odd ball to bounce. It was a really good team bowling display from England.

But that was a really poor batting display from Sri Lanka to only get 196 on that pitch. Their top order is so fragile.

A very tough day. Yesterday ended badly and it just got worse!

Gus Atkinson piled on the agony this morning and you could see the Sri Lankans getting frustrated in the field which then translated into the batting.

You could say a few of the top order wickets were unfortunate but that's how the game goes. They were never in a position to put England under pressure.

It's so disappointing and this is going to hurt. The seamers have worked so hard, they haven't had much of a break and that really does get to you. You're toiling away for such little reward.

So much has happened on day two, that Gus Atkinson's sparkling century feels like ages ago!

England started the day on 358-7 and quickly got into their stride, ending up 427 all out.

It was a commanding total, and it didn't get much better for Sri Lanka from there, either.

A fabulous day of Test cricket, it had it all.

It is a day Gus Atkinson will remember for the rest of his life.

Then some superb bowling by England that was just too good for Sri Lanka.

  13. Close of play - Eng 25-1published at 7 overs

Just two from the last over, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope remain unbeaten, and that concludes a very dominant day for England.

They lead Sri Lanka by 256 runs.

Ollie Pope is off the mark with a drive that is half-stopped by the fielder at cover, and they hurry through for a single.

England's stand-in skipper could do with a score...

There are two spikes there, that first one might just be a little inside edge.

    Well, what a review!

Dan Lawrence is not happy, he seems to think that the spike was from him hitting his pad but the third umpire deems it as an edge (which it does look like).

The review pays off for Sri Lanka and they get an early breakthrough before the close of play.

  19. SL reviewpublished at 5.1 overs

    Hmmm.

Sri Lanka think they've got Dan Lawrence caught behind. It's definitely hit the pad, but was there an edge, too?

Lbw is out of the equation, the impact is outside the line of off stump.

  20. Eng 22-0published at 5 overs

Too short, and punished by Ben Duckett for his second boundary.

England are just going through the motions at the moment.

There's very little threat from Sri Lanka and the noise levels have dropped significantly. Their bowlers - through no fault of their own - are exhausted.
