How did that get through?! He's got away with one there.
My feeling is that should've been the wicketkeeper's.

Chance! It is a thick edge from Nishan Madushka but the ball escapes between Jamie Smith and a diving Joe Root.
Was that Smith's catch? Either way Madushka gets away with one.

John Petrie on X: This could be a good 45 minute burst for England before lunch. A couple of quick wickets with the new ball will do just nicely, and who would doubt that Atkinson can deliver.

An extraordinary review.
Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special
He's nowhere near it! There was nothing from Gus Atkinson, although he doesn't give much away anyway.
Well, that was a pretty rotten review. There is a yawning gap between bat and ball.
Ollie Pope is all smiles but that is one review burned already. That could cost England later.
Well well, has Dimuth Karunaratne feathered it through to Jamie Smith?
Gus Atkinson doesn't think so but Joe Root was convinced in the slips.
Ollie Pope sends it upstairs.

Jimeny, London: England fans: “How will we ever manage without Jimmy?”
Gus Atkinson: “Hold my beer.”Stunning stuff.
It will certainly be a test of endurance of Nishan Madushka, who comfortably sees out a maiden from Chris Woakes to begin the Sri Lanka reply.
There's a murmur of anticipation as Gus Atkinson is thrown the ball to open at the other end.

This is going to be tough for Nishan Madushka, he's been keeping wicket for a day and a bit.
England get into a huddle on the boundary before marching with intent into their fielding positions.
It looks like Chris Woakes will have first go with the new ball.
It has been a tough three-and-a-bit sessions for Sri Lanka. Can Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka survive through to lunch?

Asitha Fernando has taken the eighth five-wicket haul for a Sri Lanka bowler in England, but only the third by a seamer.
Murali has five of them!
Gus Atkinson is already out there loosening up.
After the morning he has had, why not?
Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special
Asitha has bowled fantastically, he did so at Old Trafford too, but he gets the reward of the honours board today.
It's a good pitch, it's flat, but Sri Lanka are under pressure from the scoreboard and we know their top order is fragile. England's bowlers have had a good rest with their feet up so they will be raring to go.

Another very good catch, it went quickly down there.
Asitha Fernando gets his fifth wicket, fine reward for a great effort. There are only three seamers, they were asked to bowl first on a flat pitch and they have all kept charging in.
They do look tired but they've done their job.
Stone c Mendis b Fernando 15 (Eng 427)
Asitha Fernando has really bent his back this morning and is rewarded with a spot on the honours board.
He lures Olly Stone into a pull that is snaffled by Kamindu Mendis at deep fine leg to end with figures of 5-102.
England are finally bowled out for 427.
Here is said catch. The reaction of the crowd says it all.
Michael Vaughan

It was perfection! I can barely remember a mistake.
The drives down the ground, the pull shots, it had it all. That was as good a Test match century you'll ever see.

Gus Atkinson has played one of those innings that we will be talking about for years and years.
Eng 426-9
It is time for the players to take a drink after a frankly bonkers first hour, with Gus Atkinson cruising to a first Test century.
Remember he is already on the honours board after taking 7-45 and 5-61 on his debut against West Indies earlier this summer to end with 12-106 in the match, the best figures by an England debutant in 134 years.
