I spent many a happy summer watching repeats of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) on BBC2 after the cartoons had finished, Rob. Before the cricket was on, obviously.

England manage to pick up three runs of a relatively tight Mitchell Santner over.

Blair Tickner was averaging 81mph before he took his first wicket today. Since breaking the Buttler/Bethell partnership, he has added an extra couple of miles per hour to his deliveries.

Halloween XI? This whole England team is a horror show.

I saw Blair Tickner play for Derbyshire against Lancashire in Chesterfield back in June. He's looked much more of a handful today than he did on a hazy English summer's day at Queens Park.

Jofra Archer is the new batter for England.

Hmmm, 250 feels a tad optimistic now.

Brydon Carse hits a full-ish ball from Blair Tickner straight up in the air and Daryl Mitchell waits for it to come down with snow on before pouching the catch.

  6. Eng 159-7published at 31 overs

If England can somehow scrape to 250 here then they'll have something to bowl at.

Brydon Carse’s four sixes is the most in an ODI innings by a number nine for England.

The highest number of maximums in an ODI innings by a number nine is six (Darren Sammy twice and Thisara Perera).

Is this not pretty much the case for the rest of the world, though, Russ?

T20 franchise tournaments draw the talent and there's no cash to pull in the majority of international players for domestic 50-over competitions.

Back under way in Wellingon and Jamie Overton square drives Mitchell Santner for four.

Can’t be any coincidence that since winning the 50-over World Cup, and the ECB subsequently removing any meaning or point from the domestic 50-over game by introducing The Hundred, that the England 50-over side has been dreadful? England players hardly play any 50-over cricket - who knew this would have such an effect on performances? Oh, yeah, absolutely everyone outside of the ECB, that’s right.

Short from Nathan Smith and Brydon Carse swivels and flashes across the line to help the ball on its way over the ropes for six.

He picks up another maximum with a beautifully-timed whip off his legs off the next ball.

    Crisp striking.

The new ball swung an average of 1.6º in the first powerplay today. In the next 10 overs, this dropped to 0.6º. This is by far the biggest decrease in lateral movement we have seen in this series once the ball gets a little softer.

The problem with this England team is that they have no plan B for when conditions are difficult. They only have one way of playing.

    Phil in Wakefield

Currently following the score in between contractions on the labour ward awaiting the birth of our first child. I'm unsure my wife appreciates me telling her that things are currently worse down under as a means to help with the pain.

    Ray in Birmingham

Brendon McCullum will be done by Xmas, perhaps not literally but in all but official terms. This is his backyard and this is utterly brainless given conditions . Shockingly poor and indicative of how poorly prepared we’re likely to be going into the Ashes. Does not bode well at all.

    Lovely stuff from Brydon Carse.

Twice he gets down low and slog sweeps a couple of balls tossed up by Mitchell Santner for six over cow corner. Plenty of bottom hand in both those shots.

  16. Eng 126-7published at 28 overs

Nathan Smith - wicketless so far - with an eventful over.

First he has Jamie Overton fishing outside off stump.

The Kiwi seamer then straightens his line and Overton edges, but the England batter players it with relatively soft hands and it does not carry to the solitary slip in place.

Off the penultimate ball of the over Overton gives himself some room and throws the kitchen sink at a square drive, on the up, for four.

Overton then nearly spoons the final delivery to mid-off.

For any optimists out there, England's tail has the best average (15.64) of all full-member nations in ODIs over the last couple of years.

  18. Eng 121-7published at 27 overs

Brydon Carse has a sound technique.

He guides Mitchell Santner fine for a couple, defends a few, then decides to whack the Kiwi skipper down the ground, benefiting from a misfield from Jacob Duffy on the boundary to pick up four.
