He might not be moving at full capacity but Joe Root is still able to welcome Abrar Ahmed back to the attack by whipping the leg-spinner through mid-wicket for four.

Joe Root looks like a man who doesn't have the energy to get fully back in the crease or move his feet properly. He just stands there and hits down on the ball, not offering any chance for the mid-wicket fielder.

Lovely bit of business that, Chris.

Speaking of which, Joe Root finds the boundary for the 11th time in the innings with a superb pick-up shot through the leg side.

The deficit is now exactly 100 and closing fast...

Has anyone got the contacts for the groundskeeper for this Test? I think Highways England would benefit from a chat on how to build a road.

We have now registered 1000 runs in this game and a 200-run partnership from just 40.1 overs - pretty much at five an over.

Play and a miss from Harry Brook as Shaheen Afridi gets the ball to bounce from just back of a length.

Brook is unfazed, though, and smokes a drive through the covers for four next ball. Glorious.

And that brings up the 200 partnership.

    Brook 113, Root 157

Probing over from Naseem Shah, who has found some movement both through the air and - remarkably - off the pitch with this new ball.

As a result Harry Brook sees a couple skew off the inside half of his bat, one such instance brings him a single, before Joe Root gets two through the leg side to end the over.

Rare encouragement for the bowlers in this match, though.

I feel like Pope and Rizwan getting a 0 on this pitch should warrant some form of light-hearted forfeit.

Shaheen Shah Afridi needs to find the hard length. He's pitching the ball up hoping it will curl back into the stumps, but it has not happened at all.

The over from Naseem Shah was impressive, so Afridi has to manage some discipline with the new ball from his end.

It's Shaheen Afridi again with the new ball and Joe Root fancies driving him as well.

The timing isn't as immaculate as in the last over and the fielder cuts the ball off just shy of the rope but Root hobbles through for three.

Russell Moore: Obviously Root and Brook are both cramping in the heat, but as the camera panned to the dressing room for Brook's 100 I wonder how Jamie Smith is? Can you get cramp from serious pad rash in this heat?

Pakistan team are sitting down during the drinks break and you don't normally see that. It's just an indication of the tiredness out there.

    Thanks, Matt.

It's all gone rather well for England today, hasn't it?

With an hour and 10 minutes - or thereabouts - remaining in the day, they are 122 runs behind Pakistan's first innings total.

How close will they be by stumps? With a few more shots like Joe Root's in the last over, they could certainly be within striking distance.

That boundary was Root's 10th in this innings. That tells you how much running he has had to do in the heat. No wonder he looks so red in the face.

Here's a timely drinks break for England's former skipper. It gives me time to hand to Sam Drury too.

We've seen some gorgeous shots today from Joe Root, but that might be the single best one from him.

He barely celebrates by raising his bat half-mast, but it's a bigger celebration than the one he gave for becoming England's all-time leading run-scorer.

Harry Brook now has five centuries in six away Tests and is averaging over 100 in them. He has as many away Test hundreds as Nasser Hussain (49 away Tests), Graham Gooch (44), Michael Vaughan (37), Marcus Trescothick (34), Jonathan Trott (27), and Ben Stokes (57) to name a few.

Anyone foolishly expecting the new ball to hoop around corners would be mistaken.

Shaheen Afridi looks stiff as he makes his way through the over.

What is happening right now is that Pakistan are in a tough situation. What happened against Bangladesh wasn't a great recall moment after they got over 500 runs and declared the Test only to lose it.

Their batting in the second innings has been woeful and England will want them to feel that pressure again on day four by declaring by or before tea and get them in to bat.
