Listeners to rival podcasts will have heard Steven Finn calling me out to blame me for his previous byline photo.

He'll be pleased to see we have replaced it with one of him dressed as an Essex car salesman.

  2. Record-breaker Root always 'felt different' - Finn columnpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 9 October

    Steven Finn

With Joe Root having become England's leading run-scorer, his former team-mate Steven Finn has written for us about his early memories of Root.

He explains why Root "felt different" when bowling to him in the nets prior to his debut.

    You can read it here

Can we have a Test career wagon wheel for Joe Root? Is there anywhere he hasn't hit the ball?

    Thanks Sam.

That man drinks coffee like there's no tomorrow.

Speaking of food, I've got the munchies so bad today I'm eyeing up the box of icing sugar in the cupboard.

Right then, while everyone takes a breather, we're going to freshen things up as well.

I'm off to find a coffee and a late breakfast of some kind so it's Matthew Henry time again.

This pitch currently has a PitchViz rating of 2.6.

That makes it the fifth-flattest pitch in the ball-tracking era in the first three days of a Test and the second-flattest in a Test that England have been involved in after the Hamilton Test v New Zealand in 2019.

England have been in total control. A session for England, a session for Joe Root.

Harry Brook cuts for two and that's the hundred partnership.

The 350 is up as well and England walk off - well, hobble slightly in Joe Root's case - in a strong position.

Cramp aside, it's been a wonderful day for Root. He became England's leading run-scorer in Tests before lunch and reached his 35th Test century during the afternoon session.

    Not bad at all.

Saim Ayub is coming on to bowl his first over of the match. It'll likely be the last before tea.

  11. Eng 345-3published at 69 overs

More records for Joe Root to chase in the coming days, weeks, months and years.

For now, his main battle is with his hamstrings but he pushes himself through for a quick single early in Abrar Ahmed's over.

It did not look like he enjoyed doing so, though.

Banged in short by Naseem Shah and Joe Root top-edges the pull shot.

The ball goes high towards long leg, there are two fielders out there but they just look at each other, the ball lands in the gap between them and bobbles into the boundary cushion.

    Naseem is deeply unimpressed.

Spare a thought for Billy Root - getting married today, the best, most proud day of his life, and big bro Joe goes and steals his thunder by becoming England’s all-time greatest batsman and knocking a century. Got to feel for the guy.

It has all been rather sedate for the last little while.

Pakistan are on the defensive, Joe Root is exhausted and cramping and, with so many fielders back, Harry Brook hasn't been able to find the boundary as often as he'd like.

I reckon everyone has got an eye on tea at this stage.

  16. Eng 332-3published at 66 overs

Lovely, controlled check drive from Joe Root as Naseem Shah continues.

The ball is reeled in before it reaches the rope but Root pushes through the pain to scamper back for three.

He might be struggling physically now but runs are runs and Root isn't going to leave any out there if he can help it.

He barely played a sweep shot at all until he got to his century. Now Joe Root, he's decided to have some fun, he's batting right-handed, left-handed, he's sweeping, he's reverse-sweeping.

He's doing it to upset the Pakistan bowlers.

When I played for Middlesex, the bowling unit would look around, if you're on 99, there would be a ripple of applause as you make it over the 100 mark. It was always appreciated.

  19. Eng 327-3published at 65 overs

A delicate reverse sweep from Joe Root ends another Abrar Ahmed over.

The Pakistan spinner has also brought up a century in this innings, albeit an unwanted one, he's taken 0-115 in 22 overs so far.

A little over 20 minutes until tea and we've got another break as Joe Root requires another drink.

There is no sign of his cramp easing so you have to wonder how much longer he'll be able to continue.

He won't want to go off so battling through to tea - and a 20-minute break - will be the target.
