You've got to hang in there, wait for an opportunity and then pounce on it.

You've got to have the mentality that you are not bogged down by the situation, you've got to keep yourself going and hoping good will come soon.

    Beauty from Naseem Shah.

Joe Root has not played and missed much at all in this innings but he's beaten all ends up by a delivery that nips away a fraction from Naseem.

Good pace and bounce for the seamer, too. A rarity on this pitch and he can't believe it's not brought a wicket.

James Pope: What a way to celebrate becoming England's number one batsman. To think we have seen our two greatest bowlers and batsmen in the past 15 years shows how much of a purple patch this has been for English cricket.

    Matt Roberts: Joe Root. Inevitable!

Ben De Forest-Brown: Joe Root makes me feel things.

    Brook 52, Root 101

Having worked so hard to get to his century, Joe Root very nearly gives his wicket away.

His attempted switch-hit is not the best and he's rapped on the pad by Abrar Ahmed.

Pakistan appeal for lbw, the umpire isn't interested and eventually they decide against a review.

Root is a phenomenal right-handed batter. Left-handed, less good...

There it is, he gets it with a reverse-sweep. He wasn't content with just breaking the record, he wanted another 100 and he's done it, his 35th.

What a player! What a day for Joe Root!

On the day he became England's leading Test run-scorer, a reverse sweep for one takes him to Test hundred number 35.

He's exhausted having been off the field for only eight balls so far in the match so the celebrations are muted, but that is some effort.

A first hundred in Pakistan for England's main man.

There's the first of those milestones.

Harry Brook works the ball off his hip for a single to go to his 10th Test fifty - from just 49 balls.

    He likes batting in Pakistan.

Brook is onto 49, Root is on 99, both batters are close to a milestone.

    Brook 45, Root 99

Harry Brook clips the first ball of Abrar Ahmed's over into a gap and square leg and sets off hoping for two.

It was always optimistic but with a cramping Joe Root, who took on more fluids between overs, it was never going to happen.

Root pushes for two through the covers and then nudges a single to move to 99.

Brook will be on strike to start the next over, though.

What happens when you're in red hot form, like Root has been, he knows when to stop and when to be aggressive.

Joe Root is struggling with a bit of cramp again but that doesn't stop him pouncing on a half-volley from Shaheen Afridi.

He opens the face of the bat and strokes the ball through the covers for four to move to 96.

    Eng 301-3published at 59 overs

A single for Joe Root brings up the fifty partnership for the fourth wicket, one dominated by Harry Brook.

Brook himself adds a single to take England to 300 before the third and final single of the over moves Root to 90.

Two cracking pull shots to end the over, one from Harry Brook, the other from Joe Root.

But with men out in the deep, they each have to settle for singles.

We've seen Harry Brook do this many times, he doesn't step too far out leg stump here, keeps his feet very still.

Another brief delay as eyes turn to the skies with three rather noisy helicopters flying overhead in Multan.

They soon pass and it looks like Pakistan are going to try some short stuff to Harry Brook.

He's fine with that and flat bats through the vacant mid-off region twice in a row for back-to-back boundaries.

Abrar Ahmed is excited first ball back after that drinks break as Joe Root misses with a reverse sweep and is it on the pad.

Muhammad Rizwan is having none of it, he knows the ball pitched a long way outside leg.

More excitement at the end of the over after another Root reverse, this one hit straight into his boot and it loops up invitingly, but goes to ground just before slip can reach it.

Rizwan is a crafty so and so, he's tried to catch him out mid hop and he slaps him on the back and says 'sorry old chap' and walks away.
