The deficit is into double figures and Matthew Potts returns with six overs of the day remaining.

Ollie Pope and Rory Burns have played very well tonight. Well played Matt Critchley and Michael Pepper with their hundreds.

Tomorrow will be all about the bat again and all about how Essex pick up some wickets.

But it's been a thoroughly enjoyable day of cricket once again.

  3. 'The innings of a lifetime'published at 18:18 British Summer Time 5 April

  4. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts 266-4 v Durham 378

Almost a superb slips grab by Colin Ackermann, but Matt Montgomery survives.

He aimed a huge swipe at the final ball of Will Rhodes' over which flew high to Ackermann who leapt high and got a hand to it.

He looks to grab it at the second attempt, but it doesn't stick.

    Lifeline for Montgomery on four.

  5. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 5 April

    Essex 582-6d v Surrey 109-1

Rory Burns hitting a four for SurreyImage source, Rex Features

A day again dominated by the bat.

Centuries from Matt Critchley and Michael Pepper helped Essex to their second-highest total against Surrey.

The early dismissal of Dom Sibley gave Essex supporters hope their attack might find things easier than their opponents but Critchley dropping Ollie Pope when he had only scored nine looked a big miss and has proved so.

Rory Burns has looked untroubled.in reaching 59 not out and Pope has got to 45.

We still have two days left but anything other than a draw looks a tall order.

The day belongs to Tom Banton as does the new record score for Somerset with the batsman smashing a full toss for four with the penultimate delivery of the day.

Banton's unbeaten 344 has overtaken a glittering list of stars and most importantly eclipsed the 342 scored by Justin Langer against Surrey at Guildford in 2006.

He has batted all day as Somerset have all shut down Worcestershire's hopes of taking anything from this game. Solid contributions from James Rew (152) and captain Lewis Gregory (30no).

That was a superb knock from a man better known for exploits in short form cricket and a real statement of intent for the season

  8. First batting point for Nottinghamshirepublished at 74.3 overs

    Notts 253-4 v Durham 378

It's a little bit uppish, but it brings Jack Haynes a second boundary and takes him into double figures.

    Yorks 169-5 & 121 (lead by 41 runs) v Hants 249

    Jonathan Doidge
    BBC Radio Leeds cricket commentator

Two quick deliveries and the game has changed dramatically in the space of a few deliveries.

    Two quick wickets.

A lot now resting on the shoulders of Adam Lyth.

  12. dropped catch

Banton dropped on 329published at 142.4 overs

    Somerset 617-6 (lead by 463) v Worcs 154

Banton is riding his luck as he nears the Somerset highest score record of 343.

Brett D'Oliveira does the fielding off his own bowling as Banton reaches for a sweep and top edges it to the short midwicket area.

It was a difficult swirler, coming over his shoulder, but he might feel he should have got there.

Banton is seven runs away from matching Justin Langer's club record of 342 in 2006. Closing in on history and fortune looks with him.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 72.5 overs

    McCann c Robinson b Coughlin 79 (Notts 244-4 v Durham 378)

Durham keep chipping away as batters with starts keep getting themselves out.

Freddie McCann as he plays at a Paul Coughlin ball wide of off stump that he should have left.

He sends a thick edge through to Ollie Robinson who takes a two-handed catch jumping to his left.

Matt Montgomery joins Jack Haynes (6) who is still getting going.

  14. Postpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warks 198-2 v Sussex 528

Rob Yates drives away from his body and the ball is in the air but rockets past Tom Clark at second slip and away for four more runs.

    Yates to 94 now.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 52.5 overs

George Hill b Baker 4 (Yorks 162-5, lead by 34)

And bang on cue.... another one for Hampshire and another for Baker.

George Hill has been there three balls, edged one four and then been beaten for pace by Sonny Baker.

  16. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 5 April

    Sales b Stewart 8 (Northants 54-3 v Kent - Target 260)

Northants positive start has stalled as a third wicket falls.

James Sales decides to shoulder arms and it proves a huge misjudgment as Grant Stewart gets one to jag back sharply and clatters into the top of off-stump.

Kent are seven wickets away and we have just over 13 overs left in the evening session.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 52.3 overs

Jonny Bairstow b Baker 56 (Yorks 158-4, lead by 30)

Big swing and a miss from the Yorkshire skipper and his latterly disciplined innings comes to an end, bowled by Sonny Baker.

Breakthrough for Hampshire who will fancy taking this game by the scruff before the close.

  18. Banton closes on Somerset recordpublished at 140 overs

    Somerset 592-6 v Worcs 154

Banton hits Tom Hinley for consecutive boundaries to move clear of Sir Viv Richards 322 as the second highest ever Somerset individual score.

Justin Langer's 342 remains the target as the high water mark and he is 17 runs away from passing that.

  19. 50 runs

50 for Rory Burnspublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 5 April

    Essex 582-6d v Surrey 90-1

Rory Burns drives for four for Surrey against EssexImage source, Rex Features

The Surrey skipper has been watchful and gets to his half century by pulling his 114th delivery to the mid-wicket fence.

    Seven boundaries in Burns' innings.

  20. ouch!

Postpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 5 April

    Essex 582-6d v Surrey 86-1

Rory Burns cuts a Simon Harmer delivery straight into Charlie Allison at silly mid-off.

    That will leave a bruise.

I guess it's called silly for a reason.
