    Oooof, is Harry Brook OK?

It appears he is - Bashir's delivery flicks Jamie Smith's gloves and heads towards England's new limited-overs skipper at slip, with the ball clipping the brim of his cap.

Brook lies stock still for a second but then everyone's laughing, so we continue - and Raza does so in some style.

He sweeps Bashir away for four, then drops to a knee for the following ball and clouts another boundary through mid-wicket, with the ball bouncing just short of the ropes.

Madhevere has come out and timed the ball sweetly. You've got to say that the Zimbabwe batsmen have come out with a positive attitude and a determination to show what they can do. England's seamers, on a pitch that doesn't help them greatly, have looked ordinary.

  4. Zim 163-4published at 40 overs

A trio of twos for Madhevere to start Cook's 11th over.

He drives nicely into a gap in the covers, then sends his next two shots out to square leg.

And that's just the start, he pulls the last ball of the over away for four - a profitable over for Zimbabwe.

Raza's going to keep an aggressive outlook.

I enjoyed watching him bowl earlier. I hadn't seen much of him. The similarities with Sunil Narine, hiding the right arm behind him so you can't see what he's up to, and a similar pace too.

  6. Zim 153-4published at 39 overs

150 up for Zimbabwe, as Sikandar Raza tries to play a choppy sort of shot and sees the ball skid off the top of his gloves and run away for four behind the wicket.

That also takes the deficit below 150 - the tourists trail by 147.

    Simon Mann
BBC Test Match Special commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It's been a fine morning for Zimbabwe. They have battled hard with the bat in this Test match.

You feel there's an inevitable conclusion to the game but they've made England work, and perhaps exposed one or two flaws in the attack.

  8. Zim 149-4published at 38 overs

By the way, we're not sure if tailender Richard Ngarava will come out to bat in the second innings after he pulled up on day one.

So England might only require five more wickets for victory.

Madhevere sees out a Cook maiden.

This is the fullest Shoaib Bashir has bowled in any home Test. Previously, he bowled 26% of his deliveries in the full region, this Test it has been around 45%. He has also improved his control of line. Prior to this Test, 32% of his deliveries in home Tests have gone down the leg side, in this Test, that has been only 16% - again, his lowest in any home Test.

  10. Zim 149-4published at 37 overs

Wesley Madhevere is next up for Zimbabwe - he got bowled for a 10-ball duck by Ben Stokes in the first innings.

No worries about the pair - he strides down the pitch to his second ball and whacks Bashir for four through wide mid-on.

He didn't get on top of it. He wasn't looking to hit it aerially. It's quite a good catch, the sort that Stokes gobbles up.

It's a bit of a straight after lunch, not back in rhythm kind of shot.

    Another wicket for Shoaib Bashir!

He strikes with his second ball, seeing Ben Curran send a nothing-y drive straight towards Ben Stokes at short extra cover, with the England skipper taking the catch with a forward dive.

A disappointing end to a reasonable innings from Curran.

  13. Zim 142-3published at 36 overs

Ben Curran takes five dot balls then whips Cook into mid-wicket for a single, retaining the strike.

He moves to 37, while Sikandar Raza resumes on nine.

Shoaib Bashir will take the ball at the other end.

Zimbabwe trail by 159, and their first target will be that Joe Root isn't back in the dressing room for kick-off (15:01 BST).

Next step will be to get him batting again, meaning he'd likely all miss all of the match at Wembley.

Anyway, players are back out at an overcast Trent Bridge. Sam Cook will get us going again.

Poor Joe Root. It’s almost like Zimbabwe don’t care about him being able to watch his beloved Sheffield United beat Sunderland this afternoon.

We've got a fancy focaccia offering for one lunch, and another colleague has broken out a tray of sushi.

The England players will be lucky to get that at Trent Bridge.

The thing Joe’s (12:59) missing is that the umpire already made their call with the benefit of the doubt given to the batsman. He thinks it’s clearly out and DRS doesn’t have a convincing reason to say he’s wrong.

    H Illinois, USA

Disagree with Joe. Imagine the bowling side’s response to an umpire saying it’s out, ball tracking saying the ball would have hit the stumps, and the outcome being not out. Plus that would further remove the need for umpires. DRS is to overturn incorrect decisions, not save batsmen from marginal umpire calls.

A decent session for Zimbabwe, scoring 111 runs in 25 overs for the loss of just one wicket.

The one man to fall was Sean Williams just before lunch, with Shoaib Bashir denying him a shot at a Test century in England.

It's been a great morning of Test cricket. We turned up thinking are they going to lose two or three quickly? But they've shown a lot of fight, determination, and skill. They've put England under pressure. It's been entertaining.
