  1. NZ 44-1published at 11 overs

    Lead by 248

Matthew Potts squares Kane Williamson up slightly and finds the edge, but it is played with soft hands to the ball falls well short of Harry Brook in the slips and flies away for four.

Williamson then expertly guides the ball through a similar area from a slightly wider delivery from Potts.

There is a change of bowling, as Brydon Carse replaces Gus Atkinson.

  2. NZ 35-1published at 10 overs

Out strides the world's number three batter Kane Williamson. He has come to the middle in worse positions. New Zealand's lead is now 239.

    Latham b Atkinson 19 (NZ 35-1)

    Chopped on!

A touch of fortune for England and Gus Atkinson, with Tom Latham attempting a cut on the back foot outside off stump, but only succeeding in find the inside edge back onto the stumps.

  4. NZ 31-0published at 9 overs

Matthew Potts bowls the fourth maiden from nine overs this innings.

Tom Latham and Will Young are both on 15 from 27 deliveries.

  5. NZ 31-0published at 8 overs

Shoaib Bashir is yet to bowl but has been busy in the field, this time clawing the ball back from the long-on boundary after a solid straight drive from Tom Latham.

It feels very relaxed out there. New Zealand look content to just slowly accumulate runs and edge the game further from England's reach.

  6. NZ 28-0published at 7 overs

The run drought is over, including a spritely run three after a clip off the pads by Will Young.

Matthew Potts then finds the edge of Tom Latham's bat in successive deliveries, but the ball races away for four and two runs respectively.

Potts lost his footing after the first of those deliveries and looked to be in some discomfort, but was able to finish the over.

So England today, 143 all out in 35.4 overs, including a collapse of six wickets for 88 runs.

In other final Tests of a series this year. 195 all out in second innings against India in Dharamsala, including collapse of 5-49 (after 7-83 in first innings). 156 all out in 34 overs in second innings against Sri Lanka at The Oval, including collapse of 7-62 (after 6-64 in first innings). 112 all out in 37.2 overs against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, an entire collapse of 10-97 (after 6-62 in the first innings).

However England try to explain it, there is a pattern.

  8. NZ 18-0published at 6 overs

Gus Atkinson sends down a third successive maiden for England.

Part of that is down to good, tight bowling of course. But given the match situation New Zealand can also be choosy about their shots.

  9. NZ 18-0published at 5 overs

More frustration for England as Matthew Potts finds the edge of Tom Latham's bat, but it is played with soft hands and falls well short of Harry Brook at second slip.

The highest successful run chase on this ground is 269-3, which the Black Caps chased down against South Africa earlier this year.

Next on the list is 212-4 achieved by Australia against New Zealand in 2000.

Among active players, only two have scored 70+ runs, taken three wickets, and taken at least two catches in a single match against England.

One is Jason Holder, and the other is Mitch Santner, who has achieved this feat twice.

    Jason Holder, Antigua 2015:

    Batting: 16 & 103* Bowling: 2/69 & 1/63 Catches: 2

    Mitch Santner, Mount Maunganui 2019:

    Batting: 126 Bowling: 0/24 & 3/53 Catches: 2

    Mitch Santner, Hamilton 2024:

    Batting: 76 Bowling: 3/7 Catches: 2

Mitch Santner still has the chance to bat and bowl one more time in this game, potentially adding to his already impressive all-round performance.

  11. NZ 18-0published at 4 overs

Gus Atkinson maintains a tight line and length to complete a maiden over.

    New Zealand's lead is a very Richie Benaud-esque 222.

It is not only missing, but missing by a distance.

    A reprieve for Will Young.

  13. New Zealand reviewpublished at 3.2 overs

Gus Atkinson thinks he has Will Young lbw here - and given!

But Young instantly reviews. Angling down leg?

  14. NZ 18-0published at 3 overs

Matthew Potts shakes his head Will Young clobbers a short delivery through square leg for four. That was right off the meat of the bat but beautifully controlled by the New Zealand opener.

  15. NZ 13-0published at 2 overs

The weather forecast for Monday does not look too clever, so that may also play into New Zealand's thinking.

Tom Latham collects his first four of the innings with a lovely lofted straight drive off Gus Atkinson.

  16. NZ 9-0published at 1 over

Tom Latham gets off the mark with a push into the for a single to bring Will Young on strike, who does well to keep on top of a short delivery from Matthew Potts and clip down to fine leg for what looked to be two, but Shoaib Bashir's foot was touching the boundary sponge as he collected the ball, so four is given.

Young then clatters the ball through point for a lesser-spotted three to complete a good first over from New Zealand, who will no doubt want to bat England out of this game.

The England players get into a huddle before taking their positions. They need to produce something special to drag themselves back into this game.

It will be a huge effort for the seamers, who already have three-and-a-half sessions on the clock in this match. Shoaib Bashir will probably get a twirl at some point this session.

Matthew Potts will open the bowling.

What an afternoon session that was.

England began on 54-2, but an aggressive spell from Will O'Rourke did for Jacob Bethell, Joe Root and Harry Brook - the latter for a golden duck.

Ollie Pope and Ben Stokes began the rebuild, but Tom Latham's decision to bring on the left-arm spin of Mitchel Santner was inspired.

Santner removed both in the space of three balls to spark a stunning collapse, with Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts and Shoaib Bashir falling cheaply as England lost five wickets for just nine runs to stumble to 143 all out.

New Zealand will stride out after tea with a hefty lead of 204 runs and in total control of this Test match.
