Re: the accusations of a casual English approach after the series had been won. I will admit that this was evident in the summer in the final Test when beating Sri Lanka 2-1. But under Stokes/McCullum, England also whitewashed New Zealand, Pakistan and West Indies 3-0 having been 2-0 up in a series. So there has clearly been a killer instinct at times. And I don’t think the batting today so far has been overtly casual either. New Zealand have bowled well.

Ben Stokes, who'd scored five from his first 16 deliveries, opens O'Rourke's eighth over with consecutive fours.

He starts by driving cleanly through the covers, then times the ball well through mid-wicket for another boundary.

O'Rourke responds with four dot balls, but I wonder if he might get a rest after this over.

  3. Eng 108-5published at 25 overs

Pope stretches for a wide Southee delivery, just about managing to cut the ball away for four through point.

The only scoring shot of the over, with Pope moving to 18.

Stokes spoils the chance of an O'Rourke maiden, fencing his final ball of the over down to the fine leg boundary for four.

Drinks were taken to the sound of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer, while the England trumpeter followed-up with a rendition of Do They Know It's Christmas?

    A musical smorgasbord in Hamilton.

A lot of negativity around, but I think you have to take your hat off to the bowling. Bethell was a poor shot, and maybe Crawley should do better, but the other three are just great bowling.

Have England dropped the ball, or are New Zealand simply bowling magnificently with it? Always the same. If England win, it's because the opposition dropped catches, etc... If we lose, it's because we're throwing it away. It's Test cricket. Sometimes, the opposition is just better.

One run from Southee's over as Stokes turns the ball through backward square, getting off the mark from his tenth delivery.

England's hundred up from 22.4 overs - they're still scoring at a handy rate.

Meanwhile the players will take drinks.

  8. Eng 99-5published at 22 overs

    Could have been six down.

O'Rourke troubles Pope with another lifter, the England batter fends the ball away while falling backwards.

As with Root's wicket, the ball flies towards Will Young at backward point, but the ball drops just short of the fielder as he dives forward.

Pope then nudges the final ball of the over into the covers.

  9. Eng 99-5published at 21.4 overs

Handy shot from Pope, getting under O'Rourke's first delivery to send the ball up over the cordon, landing square on the boundary sponge for four.

Three balls later and he clips O'Rourke smartly through mid-wicket for another boundary as England move to 99.

Arjun Singh: Just goes to show how much of cricket comes down to a little rub of the green. Everything going New Zealand’s way and this momentum will be hard to stop. Credit to O’Rourke, he’s managed to get some incredible bounce off a length on this pitch.

  11. Eng 91-5published at 21 overs

Southee delivers one on Ollie Pope's legs and the England batter gobbles that up, whipping the ball away for four through square.

Will O'Rourke is averaging 140kph (87mph) in this spell but more impressively he's finding 2.3° of swing when doing so - only in one previous spell in this series has he averaged more than 1.0° of swing.

  13. Eng 86-5published at 20 overs

Ben Stokes' turn to face the bowling of Will O'Rourke.

He chases after the New Zealand seamer with a big cover drive, but is through the shot some time after the ball has passed.

    Maiden over for O'Rourke.

England losing focus after winning a series? Been some really sloppy batting.

    Bruce, Kent

Why do England always drop the ball after they've won the series. Where's the killer instinct?

Tim Southee returns with a change of ends, replacing Matt Henry.

His fourth ball clips the legs of Ollie Pope and keeps low enough to slip past Tom Blundell for four byes.

Will O'Rourke has 3-1 in eight balls, and the one should have been a run-out.

    Root c Young b O'Rourke 32 (Eng 82-5)

    But now Root departs!

A rising delivery, swinging in and Root can only fend the delivery into the hands of Will Young at gully.

O'Rourke has his third wicket from an excellent delivery, easily enough to account for England's star man.

  18. Eng 82-4published at 17.5 overs

    Close... but safe.

Pope knocks the ball past short leg and sets off for a first run, sub fielder Nathan Smith picks up and throws with one motion from mid-wicket and just misses the stumps as Root gets home.

  19. Eng 81-4published at 17.1 overs

    Big appeal!

    ...nothing doing.

Down the leg side from O'Rourke and Pope chases it - Tom Blundell goes up behind the stumps, inevitably, but there's no contact with the bat.

  20. Eng 81-4published at 17 overs

Joe Root is unperturbed, he sees out three deliveries from Henry and then times him nicely through long-off for four.

Two more dots follow, so Ollie Pope's first delivery will be the hat-trick ball...
