Ben Stokes is massive as a presence, both with bat and ball and his leadership quality.

I always hesitate to say that the team's fortunes rely so much on one player - I always feel as a national side you should have enough options to cope with someone's absence, but I guess Stokes does fit into that very rare and elite group of players who are so decisive because of their presence and his all-round facets.

It was heartening to see him bowling so many overs, but part of does wonder why he didn't bowl Shoaib Bashir.

In case you're in any doubt, it is absolutely roasting in Hamilton. It couldn't be a better day to bat.

As Sir Alastair says, England opted against the spin of Shoaib Bashir on day one.

Gus Atkinson is the pick of the seamers so far, taking 3-55. The recalled Matthew Potts 3-75 and Brydon Carse 2-78.

Ben Stokes, perhaps surprisingly, bowled more overs - 23 - than anyone else on day one, taking 1-86.

    Sir Alastair Cook
    Ex-England captain on TNT Sports

England put in good, honest toil on day one. They seemed a little nervous with the new ball and weren't quite on it.

It was slightly strange that Shoaib Bashir didn't get at least one over, though.

  6. State of playpublished at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

Before England bat they have to take the final New Zealand wicket.

The Black Caps will begin the day on 315-9 after a late flurry from Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner helped the hosts recover from being reduced to 231-7.

Santner will begin the morning on 50 after smacking a six with the final ball of day one. He is joined by last man Will O'Rourke, who has yet to get off the mark.

Earlier captain Tom Latham made 63, Kane Williamson 44 and Will Young 42 after New Zealand were asked to bat by Ben Stokes. But it was another batting display hampered by soft dismissals. At one stage, they lost five wickets for 70 runs.

What better way to spend a cold winter's evening than enjoying England batters clatter the ball over a lush outfield under the warm antipodean sun?

    Well, that's the hope anyway...
