I’d be fascinated to see the stats, but England must have one of the worst opening partnership averages in world cricket when Crawley and Duckett open the batting.

    Thanks Tom, and hello there.

Time to shake off some of those pre-midnight lightweights and really strap-in for the overnight.

Will you be rewarded with some heavy Root and Bethell run accumulation? Or could the New Zealand attack push you towards some shut eye?

    We'll soon find out.

As the two teams tuck into what is likely to be a delicious lunch, I too am going to take a break.

Luckily Mike Peter is here to guide you through the afternoon session.

  4. Lunch - Eng 54-2published at 10 overs

Jacob Bethell brings up the England fifty with a lovely drive through the covers. Tim Southee responds next delivery by getting the ball to spit up at Bethell and hit him on the glove.

Bethell nudges another single with a straight push down the ground to get England through to lunch on 54-2, trailing by 293 runs.

I think that will go down as New Zealand's session, but the Test match itself still feels evenly poised.

Root and Bethell batting together - it could be an old scorecard for Sheffield Collegiate as both Jacob and Joe’s dads played for the Steel City’s premier cricket team. I once played against Bethell senior for Sheffield Bankers in a midweek cup match. I spent an awful lot of the evening fetching the ball back from all parts of Abbeydale Park.

Joe Root has the knack of keeping the scoreboard ticking without anyone really noticing. He has raced to a run-a-ball 15 in no time, though he is beaten by another beauty from Matt Henry outside off stump.

Henry got through that over at a fair lick so we will squeeze another one in before the break.

  7. Eng 45-2published at 8 overs

Lovely cover drive from Joe Root, who is looking in decent touch. It doesn't quite have enough to reach the rope though so England have to be content with two.

Root ends the over with another single clipped off his pads.

We will probably get one more over in before lunch.

  8. Eng 41-2published at 7 overs

Matt Henry has been on the money most of this innings but is left shaking his head after two loose deliveries are punished by Joe Root.

The first is on leg stump and helped round the corner for a bit of a freebie. The second is a touch too full and Root clips it nicely through square.

  9. Eng 33-2published at 6 overs

So in a flash we have two new England batters at the crease - Jacob Bethell and Joe Root.

Bethell, in just his third Test, probably couldn't ask for a better batting partner as they try to dig England out of a bit of a hole.

Crawley's dismissal by Henry means this is the first time an opener has been dismissed 5+ times by a bowler in a series since Warner vs Broad, Ashes 2019 (7 dismissals).

Thought Crawley was unlucky this time - not sure he really did anything wrong. And he was driving really well, not swiping at everything like the previous test!

    Graham, Stockport

Not remotely sure Matt Henry get his fingers under that ball.

    Bruce, Kent

Henry must be asking Father Christmas for bigger pockets this year due to Crawley filling up the ones he’s got.

Duckett lbw Henry 11 (Eng 33-2)

Oh dear. England are in a bit of a hole thanks to another piece of brilliance from Matt Henry.

He bowls a bit fuller to Ben Duckett and the ball jags back in off the surface, smacking the England opener on the back pad bang in front.

Henry is celebrating and Duckett is on his way before the umpire's finger even goes up.

    Out!

The third umpire deems that Matt Henry managed to get his fingers underneath the ball. It was a brilliant piece of athleticism from Henry, who continues to be Zak Crawley's nemesis.

  14. Umpire reviewpublished at 4.2 overs

Hmm. A leading edge from Zak Crawley loops back to Matt Henry who takes the catch diving forward.

The third umpire is going to take another look...

So turns out after eradicating the first hour's score after three overs, maybe Baz knows what he's doing?!

Zak Crawley's head-to-head against New Zealand's opening bowlers:

    • Tim Southee - 84 runs, 4 dismissals, 21.00 average
    • Matt Henry - 19 runs, 6 dismissals, 3.16 average

He is yet to face a delivery from any bowler other than the opening duo in this series.

  17. Eng 31-0published at 4 overs

Tim Southee bowls a tighter line and length but Zak Crawley is equal to it, with a couple of solid forward defensive strokes.

New Zealand will be grateful for a maiden after the carnage of the first three overs.

There have been 32 instances of a batter scoring 16 or more runs off an over in Test cricket this year - England are responsible for 13 of them with Ben Duckett (four times) and Zak Crawley (three times) the only batters to do it more than twice.

  19. Eng 30-0published at 3 overs

Ben Duckett is more comfortable facing Matt Henry than he was in his previous over, working the New Zealand seamer for a couple of twos either side of the square.

A quick run single brings Zak Crawley on strike, who finds the boundary once more with a thick edge that fizzes through third man.

  20. Eng 21-0published at 23:28 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2024

Not what Tim Southee was hoping for to start his final Test match.

It is classic Zak Crawley (in a good sense). Overpitched from Tim Southee and the England opener drives gloriously through the covers, repeating the trick next ball.

Crawley makes it a hat-trick of boundaries with a check drive that beats long-on, before wrapping up the over with a straighter drive that races to the rope.

    Bazball is activated.
