    I thought I heard a noise, I must say.

What's gone on here? Ollie Pope has a swipe at a ball down the leg side.

Only the wicketkeeper appeals but he is very confident.

    The umpire wasn't interested.

Ollie Pope is a run-getter. He has the ability to get big scores.

Ollie Pope edges the second ball of the session over the diving fielder in the gully. He's tried to play the ball in that direction but not like that!

    He goes to 88.

I say that, Chris Gaffaney has his light meter out already. That's less promising.

The umpires are wandering out with players not too far behind them.

We're going to restart at least.

Ollie Pope, amid all of the noise, has played nicely. He's munching on an energy bar or two just 16 runs away from a Test century on his home ground.

Ben Duckett looked on course for his fourth Test hundred earlier. He raced to 86 from 79 balls before playing on scoop too many.

In the first session there was balls on both sides of the wickets and England capitalised from that.

That first session means England are running away with runs.

Thanks Sam. We've got a 20-minute break here before the evening session.

I reckon, given the light, we'll be lucky to get another hour in at most.

There's been some occasional good bowling from the Sri Lankans.

They'll be disappointed with how they've bowled today.

A decent session that. 116 runs added by England, while Sri Lanka have picked up two wickets. Just 25 overs bowled in two hours, though.

England skipper Ollie Pope has a near run-a-ball 84 and will resume his innings in 20 minutes.

Ben Duckett lost his wicket ramping. There will be critics of that method of dismissal on the opening day of a Test, but it was a shot that had helped him to 86 rapid runs.

Just before the break, Joe Root was caught in the deep while hooking. That goes down as a Lahiru Kumara wicket but came as a result of the first bit of Sri Lanka pressure of the day.

England have their noses, and perhaps also their shoulders, in front.

What an extraordinary shot to play with five minutes to tea and having just lost a wicket.

Harry Brook getting a feel for conditions a few minutes before tea...

Maybe in an alternate universe. But not in this England team. Brook is on the attack from get go.

That is a team wicket. Rathnayake has been probing away, creating control and pinned down Joe Root.

I feel like that's the pressure that's been on him for the past half hour. All the bowlers have contributed.

There's the wicket of Joe Root, it was short and he instinctively hit it away.

And the bowling change works immediately.

Sri Lanka have stymied Joe Root over the last 30 minutes and his eyes lit up when that Kumara short ball arrived. Decent catch at long leg.
