Angelo Mathews purgatory has come to an end.

  2. Eng 190-2published at 38 overs

Kusal Mendis with a cracking bit of fielding at backward point. Saves a boundary off the last ball of the over.

  3. Eng 190-2published at 37.4 overs

And with that Pope single, the third-wicket partnership reaches 50. How many balls did it take? 70 of them.

  4. Eng 189-2published at 37.1 overs

Pope finds the boundary behind point. It was in the air a while, but no real danger. England's run-rate hovering just above 5 now.

  5. Postpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 6 September

Very good question, Ebony. Can you regain form in just one innings?

  6. Postpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 6 September

    Ebony Rainford-Brent
Former England batter on BBC Sounds

At what stage do we decide that someone is back in form?

  7. Eng 185-2published at 37 overs

Good running there. Root picks up a couple to finish the over.

Someone might have to deliver a crane to get Angelo Mathews out of bed tomorrow morning.

    Mathews still going...

  10. Eng 182-2published at 36 overs

Change of bowling but not change of outcome. Asitha Fernando returns and adds another maiden to the two Rathnayake offered up previously.

That is very good, Bob. If there was a prize on offer, you'd very much be in the running.

Well, clearly any song being played by anyone other than the original performer. That'll be the covers.

Can't quite work out what Sri Lanka are doing here. Presumably they hoped that Mathews would be the man to back up Rathnayake?

That didn't please Mathews, another four runs that Sri Lanka can't afford.

  15. Eng 180-2published at 34.3 overs

And Mathews does go fuller and finds Pope's outside edge. But it flies wide of slip. And goes to the boundary. Typical.

Mathews needs to bowl a fraction fuller to threaten the batters.

  17. Eng 176-2published at 34.1 overs

The answer is still no. A mis-field in the covers brings Pope four more.

  18. Eng 172-2published at 34 overs

Another maiden from Rathnayake. The question is can someone keep the pressure up at the other end? So far, it has been a resounding no. England have had too many 'get out' balls today.

Angelo Mathews is one of my favourite cricketers of all time.

After the fifth ball it looked like he was going to go straight to the massage chair.

  20. Eng 172-2published at 33 overs

Just a couple of runs from that Mathews over, whose pace decreased steadily with every ball. I wonder if he will move the other way along the scales in his next over?
