It's the Sheffield crowd's turn to belt out Mr Brightside as Nathan Aspinall makes his way to the stage.

And belt it out they do.

They aren't shy about singing along to Shut and Dance as Michael Smith comes up either.

The two friends have a chat before throwing a few practice darts. That friendship will be put to one side very shortly.

This is the crucial match of this league stage. Winner advances to the play-offs.

  8. 'Hopefully last year is going through his head' - Smithpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 16 May

    Nathan Aspinall v Michael Smith

Michael Smith talking to Sky Sports: "I feel good, this is what it all comes down to. I would have preferred to be top and not worrying about it but if you get to week 16 and you're still in with a shout that is the main thing. I am feeling good and I am ready for tonight.

"It is going to be tough. We're both going to be up for it. It is probably going to end up going to 6-4 or 6-5. Hopefully his bottom falls out though and it is a 6-0 and he remembers week 16 last year and that is going through his head."

  9. 'If I get ahead he'll feel the pressure' - Aspinallpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 16 May

    Nathan Aspinall v Michael Smith

Nathan Aspinall talking to Sky Sports: "It has been good in parts. I've had some good games and then some really poor games. Playing in the Premier League and against elite players you can't slack. You have to be on it all the way through. I'm disappointed with how I've performed through the whole season but I'm happy with the results. It is a last hurrah tonight, one big performance and I've done it and I've made the play-offs.

"I need to get ahead of him. If I can get two or three up then I think his head will go and he'll feel the pressure. That is the gameplan tonight. I want to start really strong and hopefully absolutely smash him and send him back to St Helens!"

It is an odd dynamic [Aspinall and Smith being very good friends] - and tonight probably a horrible one.

Whoever goes through, the other will probably say 'well done, go on and win it'.

Michael Smith a few weeks ago would have felt like he wasn't going to be in this position.

    This is the big one!

For the second week running, Nathan Aspinall faces Michael Smith in the quarter-final - and this time, it really is winner takes all.

Just one spot at finals night remains. The winner will secure that place and head to London's O2 Arena next week, the other is out.

That is because Smith claimed a crucial 6-3 victory over Aspinall seven days ago in Leeds.

Smith was then thrashed 6-1 by Luke Humphries in the semis but he had done enough to keep himself in the race for the top four.

"In every Premier League campaign I've played in, it has always come down to the last night!" Aspinall told PDC.tv.

"I've got the job done twice in three attempts. I know what I've got to do, and I'm confident I am going to come out with a result on Thursday."

Smith, who won last year in Sheffield, added: "It's a nice feeling going into Night 16 knowing you've got a chance of qualifying, but me and Nathan will have to put our friendship behind us tomorrow night!"

That second one from Wright felt like it was making a point.

It probably wasn't the best to leave a checkout but it doesn't matter. He goes 17, double 16 on his next visit to get a leg back.
