Before facing Joe Comito in the opening match of Sunday's schedule, Thibault Tricole told BBC Sport that while he does not know much about his opponent, his focus remains on his own game.

"To be honest, and with all due respect, not much," said Tricole on facing Comito.

"It's mainly because he plays in Australia. To find out more, I watched a video of his match against Michael Smith at the World Series. To get a feel for his behaviour and his rhythm.

"As for his game, you can't rely on it because one match is not the other. We'll have to wait and see. I need to concentrate on myself."

Speaking before the first match of the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship, Thibault Tricole said he is proud to be the first Frenchman to ever compete in the competition, making his debut last year.

"I'm very proud to say that I'm the first and only Frenchman to take part," Tricole told BBC Sport.

"I hope that this is the start of the development of darts in France. In any case, this is the way forward.

"France is only interested in a sport if there are participants. But especially when there are champions. But that's not yet the case for me, I hope in the future."

The opening match of the night sees France's only ever representative at the World Darts Championship, Thiabult Tricole, take on the unheralded Australian Joe Comito.

Tricole, ranked 79th in the world, faces Comito in what is his second appearance at the competition. Last year, he reached the second round before being knocked out by former world champion Rob Cross.

Hoping to cause an upset early on is the unranked Comito, competing in his first ever PDC major event. The Australian, 43, qualified for the Alexandra Palace showpiece via the DartsPlayer Australia tour.

The prize for the winner of tonight's opener? A meeting with Luke Humphries in the second round, which also takes place this evening, scheduled for 22:15 GMT.

Teenager Luke Littler has certainly had a year to remember.

This time last year, the then 16-year-old was ranked 164th in the world and preparing for his first outing at a PDC World Darts Championship.

A year on, Littler is the bookmakers' favourite to win the title next month, having finished second in this competition at the start of this year.

Littler has risen 160 places in the PDC Order of Merit and since his last Alexandra Palace bow, has won the Premier League, World Series and Grand Slam titles.

Fans of his will have to wait to see his first match, however. He gets under way in the second round on Saturday, taking on the winner of the first round match between English duo Ryan Meikle and Fallon Sherrock.
