Recovery in my mental health makes me proud - Taipublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 2 September

Alice Tai celebrates with a Paralympic medalImage source, Reuters

Alice Tai says she is "so proud" of her recovery from some of the "worst" moments in her mental health, prior to her gold and bronze medal success at the Paralympics.

The Poole-born 25-year-old won her first individual Paralympic title on Saturday and, after an emotional moment on the podium with her gold medal, Tai reflected back to the Rio Paralympics and the journey she has been on since.

In 2016, despite winning gold in the 4x100m medley, the swimmer revealed that it was one of her lowest points as she struggled with undiagnosed ADHD.

"I'm not going to lie, Rio sucked," Tai told BBC Sport. "My mental health was the worst it's ever been and I didn't want to be there, I didn't want to be alive to be honest.

"To have made such a recovery in my mental health and to have so much surgery over the last three years, I'm so proud of myself and so thankful to the team that support me."

Great Britain's Issy Bailey missed out on a place in the final of the P3 25m mixed pistol SH1 event, finishing 19th in qualifying.

She said: "I'm actually really pleased with today. I've been working really hard with my coach Sonal for about six months now and I'm absolutely certain that I would be smack bang at the bottom of that pile without her so I'm really pleased with what we've done today.

"Of course there are a few creases we would have wanted to iron out if we had more time but actually I'm really pleased with the work we've done and pleased with 80% of that match. I dealt with it so much better than I did previous matches in the last couple of years and definitely laid some of the ghosts of Tokyo to rest.

"I'm really pleased, finished with a smile on my face. To have family and friends here as well was a massive boost. It's been a really good day. Obviously I would have liked to finish further up the field but actually that's not the main takeaway from today. I'm really pleased overall."

On missing Tokyo: "With my classification not being in Tokyo and three or four years out of the sport with injury, illness and mental health, I just don’t know what to say.

"It’s wild and the crowds are nothing I have ever experienced before. It spurred me on.

"I’ve had a tough week here and was unsure about how today would go so to have won a medal means the world to me."

ParalympicsGB's Will Bayley is safely through to the quarter-finals of the men's MS7 singles in Paris, after beating France's Stephan Messi in three straight games.

"I'm unbelievably happy," he said. "I was doing the things I find difficult really easily today. I felt like I could do a lot of things today.

"I was enjoying it. From the very first point I was right on it so it was one of those games.

"I've had some right battles against him but I was hitting the ball so well and I could tell that after the first three balls.

"I think he could tell that as well which I think changed it. I felt really good and he realised that and it’s hard to stick with me if I'm playing like that."

However, there was disappointment for Martin Perry and Paul Karabardak, who were both beaten in the last 16 of the men's MS6 singles.

Cashmore: "I'm feeling pretty good. Quite emotional today to see my parents and hearing that Dave (Ellis, her partner) also won. I'm really happy.

"I felt a lot of pressure in coming in this time. It means so much, that relief when you cross that finish line."

Lauren Steadman: "It literally took everything I had to be here today. I know it is a bronze but it means as much as a gold because of what it took to get here.

"19 months ago I wasn't here. I stood down and I didn't think I had it in me.

"It takes everything to be your best version and to fly the flag. I'm at my limit. I wasn't sure I was going to finish."

Final loss 'devastating' for Bethellpublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 2 September

    Men's SL3 singles final

ParalympicsGB's Dan Bethell had to settle for the silver medal in the men's SL3 singles in Paris, after narrowly losing his final earlier today.

"It feels devastating, I came here for that gold," he said. "I got the silver in Tokyo and it was my ambition from the start to go one better but I just couldn't get it over the line today.

"The main game plan was that discipline is everything. Half court singles is the marathon event of Paralympic para-badminton as there isn't a lot of room to hit winning shots so that was the key thing.

"My coaches, credit to them, recognised that straight away and were telling me the whole way through but I couldn't execute it the way I needed to."

He added: "I never like losing, particularly in a Paralympics when I've already gone through losing a Paralympic final. But I've got to take some pride at getting through to the final as a lot of athletes dream of it and to get on that podium. But at the moment I'm just completely devastated that I'll be on the second step."
