Cycling is open to athletes who have impaired muscle power, impaired range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis (which may result from cerebral palsy, a brain injury, a stroke or multiple sclerosis) or a visual impairment.

Athletes compete on bicycles in track and road race events and on handcycles and tricycles on the road.

Between C1 and C5, riders compete on bicycles, which can be adapted for their impairments. They may have a condition like cerebral palsy or have a leg or arm amputation. C1 athletes have the most severe limitation while C5 athletes meet the minimum impairment criteria.

For example, an athlete with a double leg amputation would compete in the C3 class, while an athlete with a single leg amputation would compete a class higher in C4.

This afternoon could bring some early medals for ParalympicsGB in the track cycling.

The first of those hopes comes in the final of the Men's C4-5 1,000m time trial, which will be starting momentarily.

Of the six finalists, three of them are British in Jody Cundy, Archie Atkinson and Blaine Hunt.

Cundy is the world record holder in the C4 category of this event, while Spain's Alfonso Cabello, also among the finalists, is the C5 world record holder.

Expect a very closely fought race here.

There was immense disappointment for Britain's Beth Munro earlier when she lost her Para-taekwondo quarter-final to China's Yao Yanin.

The 31-year-old, a silver medallist in Tokyo three years ago and ranked number one in the world, was beaten 20-16 in the -65kg category at the Grand Palais.

Munro, who is from Litherland in Merseyside but represents Wales, trailed 16-5 at one stage and although she closed the gap, she could not overhaul her opponent.

She will feature in the repechage at 16:31 BST and if she wins that bout, she will fight for a bronze medal against one of the losing semi-finalists.

Some last minute track repairs before the cycling finals session gets under way this Friday afternoon.

The work is going on around the starting area, where riders come out of the blocks. Ensuring those supports are steady is crucial for riders to make a good start.

After some dusting and a once-over with the hand vac, it looks good to go.
